On a side note, for a time, we had what was known in the South as a Swamp Cooler .. essentially, a window mounted large contraption that would inject hyper humid, yet somehow, cooler air into the room .. I guess it was better than nothing .. especially if you stood in front of it ..

A friend of mine moved to AZ and that was the first time I ever heard of a swamp cooler. She said everyone there had them. Didn't sound as good to me as a good old AC unit though.

When I was growing up having AC was unheard of. What we had was a big old window fan that Dad insisted had to be set on exhaust to blow the hot air out of the house. Why not pull the cool night air INTO the house??? I hate, hate, hated the summertime heat. Couldn't get comfortable, couldn't sleep and it made me cranky. When we got married our first apartment had AC and I swore I'd never live anyplace that didn't have it. So far, so good. Next to the wheel and beer, AC is man's greatest invention.

BTW: Any one else remember sleeping on the porch ? Or even just outside on the grass under the stars to cool off?

Growing up had an Attic Fans to pull the hot air out of the house . . . Also, I always remember having Old Metal Oscillating Fans, Window Fans, Footstool Fan, and a Dehumidifiers/Swap Cooler to keep as cool as possible . . . AND - Then when I got older what was even better, when the heat got real bad, taking a cool Shower and going to bed naked & wet laying on a large towel with a fan blowing over Ya' body . . . :headbang:

I remember sleeping on the porch. Wichita, Kansas, it was, circa 1954. We also had an exhaust fan. In MY bedroom. I don't recall a satisfactory answer for that decision. Probably because I was the littlest.

I realize that the time is almost 2 AM. I'm in the process of copying CDs to iTunes. I lost my collection of albums when my laptop crashed. I also found out that iTunes will not allow transferring songs from the iPod to the computer. If you want to do that you have to download third-party software. Since I own all of the songs I put on my iPod I don't mind reloading them. One thing I did find while I was out shopping the other day. I got the soundtrack for Guardians of the Galaxy (vol. 2). I still need to find vol. 1. I enjoy soundtracks. I can close my eyes and run the movie through my mind while listening to the albums. I'm going to have to go to Half Price Books and see if they have any good CDs.
See ya'll tomorrow when I get up.

We had a screened-in front porch, but never slept in it. Somehow our parents thought it might not be a good idea. Our exhaust fan was also in my bedroom. The idea of exhaust fans is to pull fresh air in through all the (other) windows.

Good morning everyone :)

Our 95-99 temps were supposed to be over by yesterday and we should have been back to our normal July 93 in the daytime. I know, I know it's only a few degrees difference but 93 is way cooler than high 90s. Our saving grace in Florida is that during the summer months we get a torrential rain for about 20 minutes almost every afternoon. Saves me from having to water and cools things down a bit.

It's 81o right now with promise of rain later on. Sure hope we do get it cuz my gardens are thirsty. Have the soaker hose running for now.

Oh I wish it were my own artwork. Unfortunately I do not have a talent for art!

..OMG...I just typed a whole bunch on this laptop...hit some button or other and the whole thing disappeared!!!! My GD screwed up her laptop so she used my desktop for a few days while she was here...and now IT"s screwed up:grr:AND she put all kinds of apps. on it without asking me first.
She hasn't been back since...she best stay away for a while longer. Now I have to find some smart person to get it running again. Thankfully I have a friend who might be able to fix it.

For the last few days I've had all three ceiling fans running, a table fan and a floor fan in the living/dining room areas running all the time and the blinds and curtains closed till late afternoon. I only go outside in the early afternoon....yeah...it's unbelievably hot here too.
I have an A.C., but it's very old and I'm scared that it'll quit cuz of the age of it...and I'm not taking any chances!
Oh..it's been in the high 80"s to low 90's here. We've had some rain spitting on us for what seems like a few seconds the last couple of days...yippee:D

BUT... I', m not complaining...lots of people don't have much of anything to try to stay cool!

" Rain rain....don't go away
Please come every day!

...EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM EDT THIS

HAZARDOUS WEATHER...

* High temperatures peak in the mid to upper 90s today. These
temperatures combined with oppressive humidity yield heat
indices in the 100 to 110 degree range this afternoon.

IMPACTS...

* The hot and humid air will create dangerous conditions,
particularly for the elderly and those with pre-existing health
conditions. Heat-related illnesses will be possible for those
participating in extended outdoor activities today.

Good morning everyone! :)
Its 84 right now with a high of 85. Whoopee!!

I always had ac. Except when we went to visit my grandmother in Ohio every summer. She had an exhaust fan but used it correctly. I only remember one hot humid couple of days visiting her and I was miserable without air conditioning. I never slept outside. In Louisiana that didn't help at all.

Hola .. :)

Evolution of our ability to Stand the Heat seemed like it went fairly fast .. from no air conditioning to the Modern air conditioned America took what .. ?? I'm guessing maybe 75 or so years .. ?? Kind of like TV .. (and yes, Janet is right, the Wheel, Beer and Air Conditioning stand as some of Mankind's Greatest Achievements, for various reasons .. :)) ..

Yet, for the Past History of Mankind, we went with no AC for thousands of years .. even today, the heavy black robes worn by Bedouins in the Desert allow them to adapt to their Environment .. which, seems against logic ..

Now, I'm wondering if the Modern Mennonites and such, shun the AC .. ?? .. although I have seen Amish with smart phones ..

One things for sure .. when the Heatwaves hit, the HVAC guys make the coin .. .. and, the Electric Company Cartels ..
