Schools now keep records on students from k-12, but I'm not sure where those records go once the student graduates and if law enforcement has any access to them.

Schools always kept records of "Students' with problems, including mental health issues (Guidence Counselors/Nurses). However, like most records of any child under 18 years they are sealed and cannot be accessed unless a crime has been committed or when they are adults that is unless a warrant is ordered by a judge for due cause.

Meet Me in St Louie Louie
I do want to say that, I know there are some here in our Small Corner of the Cyberverse, that may feel a bit uncomfortable with the discussion points of the last few days ..

If you do, you really should not .. this is a National Debate, there are many sides to the issue, likely no absolute Right or Wrong answer .. and, I don't think anyone is throwing stones at anyone else .. nor will they, IMO ..

We're Mature Americans, all our Opinions should matter .. not everything is all Sweetness and Light .. nor will it ever be ..

In my case, my heart always goes out to the Victims and their Families / Loved Ones .. ordinary people, leading ordinary lives, just like all of us .. they deserved Life ..

And, I still choke up when I think or talk of Sandy Hook .. that stain on the very Heart of America will never go away for me .. and it's just one on a long list ..

does it mean we should keep a National Database of the Suspected Mentally Ill .. ?? or, the known Mentally Ill .. ?? Will Americans that are considered "normal" be encouraged to contribute to such a list .. ?? What is "Normal" .. ??

Huge Slippery Slope . . .

As for "known Mentally Ill" list - if they have already been diagnosed and been incarcerated for any reason there is already a data base . . . It also depends on who someone might see to get assistance for the issues they are trying to face and/or work on - working with a professional that might disclose this information (be it HIPPA or not) depending on who they are "working" for.

ALSO - In "My" Personal & Professional Opinion . . . There is NO ONE that is NORMAL . . . Normal is only an average based on cultural and social norms, including "conforming to a standard, usual, typical, or expected" behavior ". . . If "You" disagree - please tell me one person who 'You" know that is without a doubt - Normal . . . With no differing opinions, habits, likes/dislikes, their total behavior based on societies norms, who is not emotionally challenged every day, etc. Think about it . . .

Anyone here, who has not been addicted to smoking cigarettes - which used to be an acceptable norm/habit and that today is not considered a normal activity for people to participate in, especially by those who think people who still smoke cigarettes - particularly given the health problems it can cause are - "Mentally Ill" . . . Worse, many in society now lump and consider - "vaping" and the use of e-cig into the mix, labeling it as a health problem too . . . And those who use e-cig and that vape are also not facing a realty of acceptable behavior for society - not Normal - "Mentally Ill".

Just Sayin' . . .

Well, Frannie, I'm probably as prepped as I'm going to get .. although I don't have a Bunker (yet) ..

it's coming, I tell ya .. I don't know what it will be, but, at the risk of sounding "Mentally Ill", most folks don't realize or understand just how thin "Society as We Know It" really is ..
Yes, I for one know you're right and I fear for the younger generations.

I have given up on growing veggies and fruits for the most part. Same issues that Bea posted about. I do get a few strawberries and blueberries but lettuce, tomatoes and peppers, not so much. The farmers do well with butter beans but I don't like them.
The only tomato and pepper plants that consistently perform well in this environment are Everglade tomatoes and Cubanelle peppers. And they do so even through our 3-4 93-98 degree summers. And the Everglades don't even die off unless we have a freeze. If you'd like to try them PM me your address & I'll send you seeds. It's not too late for a fall crop.

I agree with what you are saying. One thing a lot of folks forget (I am not pointing fingers at anyone on here) is that it is OK to have a different opinion. It doesn't mean that the "other" person is wrong nor does it have to get ugly because of their opinion.

There is NO ONE that is NORMAL

H.G. Wells, The Country of the Blind

    Brief synopsis.

Nuñez descends into the valley and finds an unusual village with windowless houses and a network of paths, all bordered by kerbs. Upon discovering that everyone is blind, Nuñez begins reciting to himself the proverb, "In the Country of the Blind, the One-Eyed Man is King". [note 1] He realizes that he can teach and rule them, but the villagers have no concept of sight, and do not understand his attempts to explain this fifth sense to them. Frustrated, Nuñez becomes angry, but the villagers calm him, and he reluctantly submits to their way of life, because returning to the outside world seems impossible.

Nuñez is assigned to work for a villager named Yacob. He becomes attracted to Yacob's youngest daughter, Medina-Saroté. Nuñez and Medina-Saroté soon fall in love, and having won her confidence, Nuñez slowly starts trying to explain sight to her. Medina-Saroté, however, simply dismisses it as his imagination. When Nuñez asks for her hand in marriage, he is turned down by the village elders on account of his "unstable" obsession with "sight". The village doctor suggests that Nuñez's eyes be removed, claiming that they are diseased and are "greatly distended" and because of this "his brain is in a state of constant irritation and distraction."

    Normal??

Since I can't go outside and work due to the heat, I decided to transfer some LP albums to my laptop. I set up my turntable, gathered the LPs I wanted to start with, then started the process. No sound! Checked everything and discovered the stylus was broken. I did a lookup and found that they were available at BestBuy. I went out and my daughters truck was behind my jeep. Got her keys and her truck will not start. Oh, well! I found that there was a two-pack available at Amazon. I ordered the two-pack, a micro-fiber album cleaner and a package of 100 album covers. Now to wait for amazon. Another project on hold. I'm afraid to clean or recoil any of my tanks for fear I will break it, too.

I have a fond love of reading; Science Fiction, Fantasy, Drama, True Crime, etc. I was caught off guard and had to do a google search for this book because I have never heard of it. Now, after I finish the series I'm reading, The Comet Clement Series, I will see if my library has his book.

Another SiFi book that some people maybe interested in reading that deals with differences in "Normality" . . .

    "Chrome" by Gorge Nader (Yep - That one George Nader - Wikipedia . . . ;) )

"In the future, there will be only one taboo: to love a robot. But in the desert hideaway where Chrome and the warrior King Vortex meet, a bond between man and machine is unknowingly taking shape . . . "
    I have a number of other SiFi stories/books about differences within societies too . . . Just Sayin' . . . ;)

Lastly :: a "Red Flag Law" is a gun violence prevention law that permits Police or Family members to petition a state court to order the temporary removal of firearms from a person who may present a danger to others or themselves .. now, this action is, naturally, after the act of weapon ownership .. requires a Court action, etc .. although, I guess I'd say it's better than nothing, it's not much better, at least, IMO .. but, it sounds impressive when a Politician says it .. and, it makes some feel something is being done ..

While the 'Red Flag Laws' sound good on the surface, I believe they have to be well thought out and constructed. A hasty implementation of this kind of law can easily lead to abuse and/or misuse. Don't get me wrong, a well crafted Red Flag Law, could indeed avoid a future tragedy.

But I'm seriously concerned about an anti-gun neighbor turning in his neighbor who owns guns on a trumped up charge, or an angry spouse going through a nasty divorce turning in his/her gun owning spouse saying something (false perhaps) that a threat was made. These laws, as proposed, seem to be based on assuming the 'charged' is guilty without any due process. The charged person then loses their property and incurs monetary expense (not insubstantial) to 'prove their innocence'. Just appears totally backward from our form of justice.

Oh and @Uncle Willie ... here in PA you'd be a criminal. PA has a law that if you are given a legal prescription for that 'alternative substance' you are required to surrender all your firearms to the state police under penalty of becoming a criminal if you don't. And obviously you can not legally purchase any firearms. On the background check form you are supposed to answer 'Yes' to taking illegal drugs, which disqualifies you from purchasing a gun, because the National Laws still don't recognize the state laws for 'permitted' medical users. So far the PA state police have said there are no plans to collate a database of people who have this 'prescription' and go after them. But who knows what's coming 'tomorrow'.

Which leads me to wonder if the day comes a database is built of mentally ill people and they can't purchase guns ... will I be on that list because I've been under the care of psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, and MD Dr. for anxiety and depression and have had prescriptions for both moods ... will HIPA laws change to release my information to yet another database in the cloud to control what I can and can not do.

Yes, we definitely need to do something but hastily passing new laws isn't the long term answer. We need a change in the moral character of our country much more than we need quick fix new laws. Both sides of our political spectrum have to stop spewing hate at each other. Trump has to stop demeaning his opponents and his opponents have to stop the 'hate Trump' philosophy to win the next election. Seems each side is just roiling up the other side creating animosity and it trickles down to the crazies in our society who then do unspeakable acts.

Our leaders have to become the adults in the room for the nation to follow. That, IMHO, would be a major start to healing our country and re-uniting it again.

I'm out ... this may be the longest post I've done here in the lounge.
