Jerry, please don't take this as anything but constructive discussion, which I think we can all have here .. there actually was a Law designed to combat/track Mental Illness suspicions as it relates to firearms .. I believe it was rolled back in 2017 .. with help from the NRA ..

Sadly, in the USA, it is easier to get a gun than it is to get mental health treatment ..

Keep in mind, I lean Libertarian and Independent, and, I carry ..

EDIT :: I'm also the Guy, as some may recall, that firmly believes an Apocalypse of some sort is coming .. which, I guess, also makes me a Doomsday Prepper ..
    Are you prepping, Willie?

Wasn't it one of the Bush's that decided it was costing the gov't too much money to keep all the crazies locked up?

    Good morning fellow peeps!

off to the Dr. in a while for a full physical per the Ortho's instructions...I guess that means that I WILL be having the rotator cuff surgery( spelled it correctly this time:))

Wait a minute...full physical?! Does that mean that he thinks I might be too old and decrepit for the surgery?!

Good morning Dancing, Yiddle, Fran and Rose and anyone else who is up.

Well I did it. I found the garden yesterday. Filled the wheelbarrow with weeds. There's still more to do, but the worst of it is done. Looks like I'm going to be making a large pot of tomato sauce. The tomato plants are going nuts. They're so laden with tomatoes the supports are falling down. Good thing I only planted 4 of them. Cukes, kohlrabi, green beans and onions are still doing well and I'm going to pull up some carrots with Hux today.

We're going to be watching Hux (3 yo) and Brody (6 months) today and overnight tonight. Hopefully Brody will sleep through the night for us as he's recently started to do or I'll really be dragging tomorrow!

Wasn't it one of the Bush's that decided it was costing the gov't too much money to keep all the crazies locked up?

Wasn't it Hillary who pushed for inclusion in the general population and closed the mental institutions instead of fixing what was wrong with them? There was a lot of criticism about restricting the civil rights of the mentally ill. The HIPPA laws and restrictions on medical professionals and law enforcement complicated matters. Schools now keep records on students from k-12, but I'm not sure where those records go once the student graduates and if law enforcement has any access to them.

    Good morning :)

Janet I envy you your veggie garden. Mine was like yours when we lived up north…loads of veggies. North Florida is not a good place to grow them. We go from winter to summer temps within the blink of an eye so it's too hot for them. We're lucky to get 2-3 tomatoes per plant. South Florida on the other hands grows great veggies by reversing the growing to the winter…when temps are like northern USA's.

I have given up on growing veggies and fruits for the most part. Same issues that Bea posted about. I do get a few strawberries and blueberries but lettuce, tomatoes and peppers, not so much. The farmers do well with butter beans but I don't like them.

Apparently it was a state-by-state decision, not presidential. It was powered by the idea that mentally ill people should be given self-determination, ignoring the fact that their mental illnesses controlled them. Interesting article.

However, Ronald Reagan did a lot of the emptying of mental institutions during his tenure as governor in California.

    Hola .. :)

Some interesting commentary on post-El Paso / Dayton and mental illness ..

I tend to believe, given some of the comments made as well as what I would think would be just plain logic, solid Background Checking would be something most all of us can agree on, based on what you've written .. as well as the closing of the "Gun Show Loophole" ..

You see, I don't know what it means when people talk about Gun Control and the Mentally Ill .. does it mean we should keep a National Database of the Suspected Mentally Ill .. ?? or, the known Mentally Ill .. ?? Will Americans that are considered "normal" be encouraged to contribute to such a list .. ?? What is "Normal" .. ?? "You know Joe, that guy that lives up the block .. ?? He's always looking out his window and staring at cars that go by .. and, the other day, I saw him talking to himself .. I know he has a gun, too .. I'm going to turn him in, it's just the right thing to do .."

I know a Family that has a Down's Syndrome son .. in his late 20's, living at home, etc .. a very sweet guy .. should he be on "The List" .. ??

I think the point of purchase is likely the highest and best time with which to investigate the Buyer .. once a weapon lands in the hands of the Owner, the nefarious plan begins to come to full fruition .. so, logically, whatever can be done to prevent that person from getting the weapon(s) is a step in the right direction .. no .. ??

Lastly :: a "Red Flag Law" is a gun violence prevention law that permits Police or Family members to petition a state court to order the temporary removal of firearms from a person who may present a danger to others or themselves .. now, this action is, naturally, after the act of weapon ownership .. requires a Court action, etc .. although, I guess I'd say it's better than nothing, it's not much better, at least, IMO .. but, it sounds impressive when a Politician says it .. and, it makes some feel something is being done ..

Deflection by Misdirection from the hard choices .. "Hey Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat .. "

Just for the record, I believe the process had begun well prior to Gov. Reagan .. :)

Well, Frannie, I'm probably as prepped as I'm going to get .. although I don't have a Bunker (yet) ..

it's coming, I tell ya .. I don't know what it will be, but, at the risk of sounding "Mentally Ill", most folks don't realize or understand just how thin "Society as We Know It" really is ..

Mental health issues...violent video games... and the internet are in countries around the world, yet...we are the only one with mass shootings by our own citizens taking place on a regular basis. Why?!!! Other countries are beginning to warn their people against traveling here because it's unsafe!

Pointing fingers at past politicians and their actions, on either side of the aisle, solves nothing. It won't change the past or bring back the dead. How many more innocent men, women and children have to be slaughtered while doing nothing more than going about their daily lives? Those in power now need to do something NOW! If they can't find a way to stop it entirely, they need to take steps to at least diminish it.

Last night a motorcycle backfired in Times Square NYC sending crowds of people running in panic... People are living in fear! I'm angry and heartbroken over the state my country is in...

Actually it was during President Ronald Reagan's term in office that ended Federal Governments involvement in providing Mental Health care (1981 the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act ). This lead and was the beginning to the deinstitutionalization of mental health patients and the closing of many mental health hospital/insituations, resulting in a number of those with mental health problems, especially with serve diagnoses becoming homeless and/or being incarcerated (a number for just living on the streets because they had no other place to go).

    TIMELINE: Deinstitutionalization And Its Consequences
