I'm curious why a Hospital was used for the extractions .. ??

Because I was put under with anesthesia, My Primary & Dentist at the time thought it was better, especially given "My" Heart & Breathing problems . . . :thumb:

It's weird to sit there and listen to somebody tell you "Pick the white shade you want, match the gum color of your mouth .. "

Tell Me About It . . . After that, I even insisted they look at and use about 4 different picture at different ages to use as a reference and to match what my teeth looked like (Color/Size/etc.). . . BTW: The Dentures did match . . . :D

I'm a bit convinced I got a fairly good deal quote ..

From the little I know and others have told - YES - Ya' did . . . The original Dentist I had, quoted me just over $1K for the rest of the extractions and then another $4K for the Denture and that was with a discount too . . . That's just one of the reasons I went to a Dental School to get Dentures (which I found out later cost just over $2.5K - Thankfully "insurance" paid ) . . .

Whatever Ya' finally decide to do . . .

I know I am fairly new in this thread, but I've grown very fond of y'all. I thought I owed it to you to tell you that tomorrow will be my last day on the forum for awhile. I really need a vacation from here. Dealing with some things that will work themselves out, but, in the meantime, I need my energy to focus on that and myself. I send out love and hugs to my new friends and love and hugs to my old friends (Frannie and Gracie). I hope to be back sometime in the future, but I can't give a time. Could be sooner, or could be later. Thank you for accepting me so readily and caring so deeply so fast. Take care. Will see you tomorrow, one more time....:wub::wub::wub::wub:

Thought you could tell by the way I typed it, I was being sarcastic about the YAY~

Good evening and have a good night, Folks....and a better tomorrow...

    I understood - "Sarcasm" - is always appropriate . ..

But let's be real honest here - I rather "like" very much that Ya' might be "Strange" too . . . :D

Whew! Lots to catch up on! I got home last night from the visit with my sister. South Carolina is very nice and I loved that some flowering bushes that we only see in bloom in the Spring are blooming again there!

I was handed a blank ballet after I signed in. There were multiple stations setup for privacy and also long tables where you could just sit down and fill out the form if you didn't care about 'privacy. The kicker was ... there was just one machine to run the completed ballet through to record it. That created a small queue of everyone trying to submit their vote. Took about 30 seconds each to process it. If it were a 'big' election the queue would have been quite large and annoying to wait in line. They'd better get more of those machines for the presidential election.

I didn't know this was the last election to vote a straight ticket. On today's ticket you could vote a straight ticket but then select someone here and there from the other party, and that would override the candidate in that position for the 'ticket' you voted for. I thought that made sense for filling out the form faster if the majority of 'your candidates' were of the same party.

Overall I didn't like the new system ... reminded me of taking standardized tests back in H.S. and I hated that, so it brought back funky memories. That and it just seems a step backward going to sharpies and paper for voting. Let me stay home and vote from my smart phone.

Unfortunately I didn't realize until too late that I would miss voting by 1 day so I didn't see the new voting system. I like that they're trying to make a paper trail so as not to just rely on computer tracking (which I don't trust). Obviously this transition is not being handled very well. When they come up with these brilliant ideas you'd think they'd also think about how it's going to work in practice.

    Thanks, @Uncle

I just don't have the energy to check into it and get inundated with all the calls and mailings that would be inevitable at this time.

Mike and I both thought our heads were going to explode when we first got into Medicare. Finally we called the phone number on the Medicare.gov site and we had a guy come out to the house. He laid out our choices according to our needs and we went from there and it was fine. A few years later we decided to go with Humana Advantage (seemed simpler and they had a couple extra perks) which worked well enough (given that we weren't seeing as many doctors as we are now). The problems came when Mike saw 2 doctors out of network. He got receipts and was supposed to be reimbursed by Humana. I want to tell you that the run around we got for the past year made it very obvious that they wanted us to just go away. MAYBE we finally got it straightened out, but the check hasn't come in the mail yet...

The point I'm trying to make about making the call is the broker can look at your specific needs, doctors as well as Rx and advantage vs supplemental plans, and give you the info you need to make the best decision for you. They handle the paperwork.

    Good morning, Everyone :)
Rain and snow in the forecast today...YAY!

Oye! Definitely not ready for that yet, but I did hear we might have a rain/snow mix tonight.

    PSA for Today ::

Thanks! Not sure if our daughter knows about this yet, but I passed on the info.

EDIT :: I was not even going to mention this, but, I need to ..

Well, the Dental Visit did not go very well .. for some unknown reason, it appears my teeth have developed some sort of brittleness .. and the chipped tooth is likely an omen of things to come (I guess unless I go on a Liquid Diet .. o_O) .. my Dentist insists that the permanent solution is {{shudder}} initial removal of my upper teeth and the installation of a Denture .. and in 6 months or so, the same on the lower teeth .. he says alternative methods would be substantially more expensive and that at my age, I should not expect my teeth to last forever ..

He also says with proper pre-planning, he can be done with the upper teeth in under 30 minutes and have me out the door in an hour .. that just seems incredibly weird to me ..

This has me quite upset and anxious .. the Dentist indicated that I could end up breaking one off at the gum line, which would then exacerbate things from a Dental perspective ..

I would solicit any commentary that any of you have from a personal perspective as to this procedure, your experiences, etc, if you care to divulge ..

Quoted $3K for the upper job, turnkey, with a medium grade denture ..

All this is quite new to me and really disconcerting ..

Ugh! So sorry you have to go through this. From what I've heard about the cost of dentures though it sounds like you're getting a good deal financially.

Thanks .. I'm curious why a Hospital was used for the extractions .. ?? My Dentist does it all in office and actually makes the denture there as well .. my $3K quote for the uppers included a temp denture which will be fabricated prior to the actual "day" and a permanent at the end of 6 months .. with a 3 year warrantee on the final denture .. he put the sell on that plan, stating I would have a spare set in case I needed to bring the permanent ones in for anything, adjustment, etc ..

It's weird to sit there and listen to somebody tell you "Pick the white shade you want, match the gum color of your mouth .. "

I'd think about doing it all at once, but then the price essentially doubles and I'd like to at least recover financially for 6 months prior to going back in .. the more research on-line that I've done, I'm a bit convinced I got a fairly good deal quote ..

Wonder if your cardiologist might think it's a better idea to do it in hospital and then it might be covered? Wouldn't you need his clearance for your dentist anyway? I definitely think you should check with him about it.

Well - This is exactly what happened to "Me" . . . As I mentioned before ALL "My" Teeth started breaking off at the gum line - about 6 months to 1 year after heart operation . . . After discussing with the Dentist what we could do at the time, he tried to save them, however - after $2,000 out-of-pocket they kept braking off and it was decided to remove them all and get dentures. So - It was decided I would go into the hospital to have them all removed at once (both top & bottom teeth - only approximately 20 left anyway). While the after effects were still a lot of discomfort - I am so glad I did ! ! ! Because it would have been the same discomfort - but twice. The only thing I was very upset about, because of the State "Insurance" I had to fight to get dentures. Matter of fact, I had to wait 6 months before I could go to a Dental School to have them created. AND - Then another 6 Months until the student (A Licensed Dentist taking an Continuing education class) completed them. Of course, YMMV - as it did for a number of people I know, including family members. They had temporary Dentures that were immediately put in their mouth after all their teeth were removed. Then had gotten a permanent pair made for after their mouth healed and swelling went down.

Given "My" experience - IMHO - I would suggest getting them pulled all at once . . . Just a thought . . .

Now - What Ya' might find it somewhat humorous (as I do now) . . . While the pair of dentures only needed slight adjustments a few weeks after to make them fit perfectly - I got them just before Christmas - Thankfully . . . However, I have never been able to wear them longer then 2 hours at the most for the past 2 years . . . I do not "gag" or "retch" as some other people do, but get extreamly nauseous . . . AND - It is not from the adhesive nor any other product to make them secure - just the dentures . . . So, after all that, I still have no teeth I can use and I have had to adjust somewhat to eating any solid food . . . Thankfully, I am not at the stage of Blending everything like a smoothie - or eating baby food at of a jar . . . Well - Not Yet Anyway . . . Just Sayin' . . . ;)

Hopefully - "You" will have a much better result with Dentures - then I did . . .

EDIT: AND - YES, As @Anise said - it could definitely also resulted from being a Diabetic and from all the medications too . . .

Is it possible that they fit just a little too far into the back of your mouth so it's causing the nauseous feeling?

I'm glad that you're letting us know because otherwise we'd be pretty worried. Sorry you need to take a break, but I certainly understand. Stop in when you can just to let us know how you're doing. Or maybe you can just check up on us once in awhile and let us know how we're doing!

EDIT :: I was not even going to mention this, but, I need to ..

I had mine all out at 21. Mostly genetics, very little enamel and soft teeth.
I could lose a chunk of tooth by drinking water.
Yes, it will take a while to get used to, but there are a lot of pluses, too. It sounds like you have a good dentist! Good plan and reasonable price.

Actually, NO - Medicare does not generally include coverage for routine dental care such as dentures, cleanings, fillings, and extractions. However, certain dental emergencies might qualify.

Now, even with that said, there are a number of different - Dental Insurance plans for Seniors, Medicare Supplement plans and also there are a number of New Medicare Advantage plans (part C) available that include Dental Services and Dentures (here in FL we are inundated with a huge number of commercials on TV and "mail" for these). Since - Medicare has open enrollment October 15th until December 7th you can sign-up for one of these now. Here is a couple of links with more Medicare information:

You can also find out more information about the Medicare Supplement Plans (Medigap):

AND - Information about Medicare Advantage Plans here:

Thankfully - Although I was not on Medicare at the time - I was covered by "Disability Insurance" (Medicaid) for a Dental Emergency and went into the hospital to have them all extracted at once under anesthesia - well actually for the few I had left after my heart operation (No matter what the Dentist or I did they kept braking in half or off - over $2,000 out-of-pocket later  ). A year later I was finally able to get Dentures made - Dental School - took 8 months, but I got them.

    Hope this information helps . . . Just Sayin' . . . ;)

The doctors used radioactive iodine to remove the last of my thyroid gland that couldn't be cut out when I had thyroid cancer. That almost destroyed my salivary glands. My mouth got so dry that water made my tongue hurt. I could only drink sweet drinks that made me salivate. It's mostly better now. But, in the meantime, my teeth crumbled.

So, I've been wearing dentures since I was about 20 or so. I used the dental school for my dentures. You get the best quality dentures for the price that way. The other cheap dentures I hear are pretty bad.
Finally we called the phone number on the Medicare.gov site and we had a guy come out to the house. He laid out our choices according to our needs and we went from there and it was fine.
He came out to your house?! How wonderful!

Great - I really hope the information Helps. . . And - If I may be so bold to suggest -Ya' might want to check out the website now to get familiar with what is/might be available in the future . . . If I can of any assistance let "Me" know . . . Just Sayin' . . . ;)

Is it possible that they fit just a little too far into the back of your mouth so it's causing the nauseous feeling?

Thanks for the suggestion . . . I actually thought the same thing at one of the "after" fitting, so the Dentist remove some of the top plate and said he couldn't take anymore away . . . But Ya' know what, I'm gonna give it another try - will go see another Dentist and have them check to see what they can do to possibly modify the plate . . . Again - Thanks . . .

Sounds like a good plan. Obviously some places are better than others creating the dentures and if you've got a sensitive gag reflex it could make all the difference. Good luck to you!

Morning, all, and happy Friday :)

Still in the 30 - 50 range, and while they keep making noises about rain, well, it's just noise here at the south end of the Sound. But only from the 'caster's lips, not the pitter patter of rain on the roof.
