 That's enough to scare anyone away from ever visiting a dentist...;)
Indeed! In my basic training company, we had several guys go to the dentist. Every one came back with no teeth at all. After seeing that, I never visited an Army dentist in my remain five years of service.

Here's an old Army dentist joke.

A guy enlists in the Army. They issued him a comb and cut off his hair. They issued him a toothbrush and cut off his hair. They issued him a jock strap and the poor kid promptly deserted.

I know nothing about making dentures, absolutely nothing. Having cleared that up, I'm wonder if now-a-days they use laser scans and and CAD/CAM like systems to 'map' your mouth/gums into a 3D digital model. Then use the CAD/CAM system to build/created the dentures.

I ask, because that's how our dentist does it when making crowns. It's quite the high tech process. The resulting product needs very little hand-touching up to fit perfectly. He spends about 15 minutes scanning my mouth. I go away for an hour. Come back and he spends about 10 minutes to install the crown.
My question would be....what is the crown made of? I'm guessing it's some kind of plastic...

AH - But when Ya' have no teeth they can only make a 3D version of your gums - So it wouldn't really help . . . Just Sayin' . . . ;)

BTW: When I had teeth a little over 10 years ago - they did actually use the scanner (like an X-ray) - much easier & better to see what NEEDED to be done . . .

I believe it is porcelain or a composite resin, might also use metal simaler to when someone gets a filling . . . Not FUN . . . Some people even get Gold or Silver Crowns - "Grills" - too . . .

I don't believe porcelain could be done that quickly. It could be acrylic/plastic, sometimes used for caps, or an amalgam as you suggested, that's used for fillings.

Shall I tell about another run in with a dentist? When my son was about 3 years old, I took him to a pediatric dentist because all of his baby teeth were developing cavities near the gum line. The dentist wanted to put stainless steel caps on all of his little teeth, and I wanted acrylic caps. The dentist said that they would stain over time and then...accused me of being unable to love my son if his teeth were stainless! I went straight up and turned left!! I informed him that I would love my son if he were bald and had no teeth at all!! The James Bond movie with 'Jaws' in it had come out not too long before, children can be very cruel and I was NOT about to have my son made fun of and called 'Jaws'. I told him that I would pay whatever was not covered by insurance, could care less if the acrylic stained, as baby teeth aren't permanent, and either he put on acrylic caps, or I would seek another dentist.

My son got the acrylic caps, and they lasted just fine until those little teeth came out naturally.

I was fortunate enough to see her perform in person. She's a Seattle girl, too, and it was a total surprise to see her when I went out dancing one night. I still love that song. Thanks for bringing back some memories, Willie!

Agreed, I really should have been more specific - porcelain would take a lot more time, however I thought I was responding to a general question about what caps are made of . . . "My" BAD and apology if I wasn't clear and lead anyone down the wrong path . . .

Good morning! Brrrrrr, it's 19o outside - our coldest morning so far. It's only going to 42 today so I guess we'll be bundling up for our trip to our daughters this morning. She's running a 5k early tomorrow morning so we're going to spend the night and watch the boys until she gets back from that. Geez, it's probably only been a little over 2 weeks since we've seen them and it feels like forever. Hux wants Nana and Pop Pop to come play with him! Can't say no to that!!

Good morning, all. It is currently 37° with a high predicted to be 66°. I am up a bit early today getting prepared for a day at the range; I was actually up before my alarm went off. I'm only taking a couple of rifles and a few handguns. I have a neighbor who wants some lessons. I hope everyone else has a little fun on this fine day.
