Meet Me in St Louie Louie

Hola .. :)

Nice and thanks, Mary .. I can't say the work saved me, it was really a woman that did that .. However, I always advocate for folks to actually take up doing something / anything .. use that Right Side of the brain .. or, you'll go through life always wondering what's missing ..

I know about everyone here does do something .. but, for a minute, I'll single out my Friend Sandra .. she won't really write about it, because that's just the way she is .. But, Girl, I know with your RA and whatever else, it took some real determination to take up the brush (again) and stick with it .. Much Respect ..

Too many of us Oldsters end up giving up at some point .. you just have to press on and "Do the best with what you got .."

That said, in my case, the Brain was the second thing to go ..

Brain isn't gone yet. In fact, you still use both sides.

I don't know about this left-sided headache-- just can't shake it, but making progress.

As for Sandra's art-- what a wonder! So nice to pick it back up and know that with the motor limitations, you never lost the talent.

I believe that self destruction steps in when creative talent is discouraged or even punished.

I don't usually reply to my own Posts, but, it's been a little slow around here lately .. o_O

When I exited the Military, I spun out of control emotionally .. they were very Dark Days, where I turned to "Mind Altering Substances" of both the Legal and Illegal sort .. I could have ended up a Statistic and in retrospect, I know I was close .. there were a number of reasons why, but I think the main one was, I just believed I had no purpose and I ended up not caring ..

Fortunately for me, someone stepped up and thru the Power of Love, gradually brought me back .. she disappeared into the Mists of Time, but some days, I still look back .. it's odd how a Young Woman, with a Free Spirit and limited Life Experience, could have pulled that off, yet all these years later, it's a Legacy I carry to this Day .. sometimes, I believe some folks have a certain "Gift" that is bestowed on them thru whatever Power holds the Universe together .. and, if we are lucky enough to fall within that Circle, we are, indeed, better for it ..

Carpe Diem ..

From the "What's Twerking My Chain Today" File

SNAP (the food stamp program), has a place .. do people abuse the System .. ?? Of course .. I don't know of any "Program" that is not subject to abuse .. clamping down and requiring work in some cases is probably a logical move on a level or two .. at the same time, legit and provable need has to be part of any equation .. like many things in Life, there are myriad facets to the Debate ..

Back years ago, I remember there were actual paper "stamps" used by recipients .. and a definite line on what they could or could not be used on .. which was promptly ignored by many Merchants, since there was really no way to prove what the "stamps" were being used in payment for .. there was also a thriving Black Market in these things, where recipients would sell (at a discount) for cash money the "stamps" ..

When the Debit Style plastic came into being, it was supposed to clamp down on such abuse .. which it really did not accomplish .. folks to this day will attempt to sell a balance on a card at a discount .. or volunteer to go to the Grocer and buy you some stuff and then sell you that stuff at a discount .. the discount is generally 50% .. so, it's pretty tempting .. I've actually been accosted in the Kroger parking lot by folks that have made that offer, usually with some kind of scam line like "I need gas money .." or some such .. and, these Sellers do get Buyers, because who would not be tempted to get their Grocery List filled for 50% off .. ?? (disclaimer :: I've never taken anyone up on this)

As well, I think the definition of what qualifies as a SNAP purchase has been liberalized over the years .. I mean, I've seen folks in front of me in the Grocer line getting filets, etc .. I asked a Store Manager I know a while back about that, and he said "It's pretty much anything these days that is not considered hot food" .. which, I guess is why the Fast Food and other Restaurants can't take SNAP .. (although there is a Pizza Chain that has capitalized by offering "Bake at Home")

(on a side note, I don't know why the term "Government Cheese" just popped into my head)

At any rate, I'm not writing this to offend anyone out there that uses the Program .. I believe part of Governments job is to insure the well being of those less fortunate, I always have .. at the same time, if fat can be trimmed, it's a good thing, as long as those with real needs are not penalized ..

Just stop handing the 1% breaks ..

Government cheese was common in the 80's in government food assistance programs (not welfare, different deal for military families). As a child, I ate alot of government cheese, funky peanut butter too. Both parents worked 3 jobs, dad was ARMY, but had 2 other 'after work/weekend' jobs, but times were tough. I also wore homemade clothing then, got some teasing, but my mom meant well. Good times then, even though we were broke. Now, broke means something different to most people. Not offended, just clearing the air (breaking the cheese lol) on that comment.

My friend told me about coming stateside after vietnam, back to California. He was in supply, but a bomb blew up in the road when he was on the back of a motorbike in Saigon. After the hospital, arriving home on the bus, he got spit on and swore at. He found his angel soon after, she saved him. Strange how one person can make so much difference in our lives, but it's true.

AND - For Seniors too . . .

THE BEST EVER & GREAT FOR GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICHES ! ! !

xnJyZdF.png

It may say "Pasteurized" on the box - But it was "Cheddar Cheese"

Matter of fact, My" mother would get what they call "Commodities" (Farm Fresh Vegetables/Fruit, Rice/Pasta, other stable items, including dried beans, can goods and even Chicken every so often too ) every month and of course that included 1 block of "Government Cheese" . . . However, she didn't use that much, so she would share it with "Me" . . . When she got it she would cut a 1/4 of the block off to use for the month - then freeze the rest in 1/4 blocks to use for the next 3 months . . . Then the next month she would freeze the new block of cheese and ship it off to "Me" . . .  :headbang:

Really wish they would bring it back, especially now that I am a Senior and living in the same complex as she did . . . OR - Even have it available at a Supermarket or the Food Banks . . . I so miss those Grilled Cheese Sandwiches . . .

Just Sayin' . . .

Good morning Anise and Fran. We've got 19 degrees this morning. Brrrr! It'll go up to 43 before it warms up and snows. That sounds goofy. Anyway, I'm glad we don't have snow because we're going to our son's house for Miles birthday party today. He's going to be 5 years old on Tuesday! Wow, kids do grow fast don't they?

Totally agree with you about discouraging talent. It's why I hate to see creative programs cut in our schools. And yes, Sandra's talents are amazing and she's making it work even with her physical limitations.

Sorry to hear about the headache. Is it sinus? Those headaches are miserable. I think the cold weather and constant heat plays havoc on our bodies.

@yiddleboge6 I don't know if your sweet potato casserole was the same recipe we have, but I don't really like sweet potatoes and I love this dish and it's certainly easy enough to make. It's pretty sweet, so you could cut back to 3/4 C sugar.

3 cups mashed sweet potatoes (Wanda says these are the white ones and not to use yams, the orange ones. but i dont see why you couldn’t use either)
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
3.5 T butter
1/2 cup evap milk
1 T vanilla
1/2 t salt
1/2 t cinnamon
1/2 t nutmeg

Beat all of above ingredients together and put in buttered casserole dish. Top with:

1/2 cup light brown sugar
1/2 cup dark brown sugar (or just one cup of either brown sugar)
1/3 cup flour
1.3 cup melted butter
1 1/2 cup chopped pecans

Sprinkle mixture over the top of casserole and bake uncovered 350 for 30-35 min

Yes, the headache is sinus. But I also have a chronic injury to my left shoulder, and both can progress to tension headache x sinus headache. Then it becomes a matter of no glasses, no hearing aids, no teeth, the only things that can touch my head are my pillow and my concerned pup.

Good morning friends!
Quick post cuz my GD's here and she'll be going to bed in a bit ( my pc is in the spare bedroom).
My Christmas decorating is done..mainly cuz it's what I call "minimalistic". I had purchased a huge bag of sunflower seed for the birds that's been in the sunporch for a week...trying to figure out how to get it in the bin at the back of the house...it took her only a hot minute and I didn't even have to ask her! ( She's my "muscle" now!) I am truly blessed with her!

I'm still as weak as a kitten...but I think I'm getting better, I'm starting to eat a little more. ( hell of a way to lose weight!) I don't even want chocolate anymore!

I hope everyone has a great day!

Off to the boobtube....

That "Government Cheese" box sure looks like a box of Velvetta to me, although they fancied up the box for Velvette. Pasteurized, processed cheese. Does make great grilled cheese sandwiches and melts easily.

AH - IMHO - While "Velvetta" is alright at times (melts very nicely - great to use w/Rotela & other dips) . . . But once again - IMHO - No way does it comes close or replace the texture/flavor and especially the Cheddar taste - nor "mouth" feel of "Government Cheese" : . . . Just Sayin' . . .

AND - It seems I am not the only one, found this image online that sums it all up:

BTW: Very Interesting/funny article here:

That looks to be the very same one I tasted on thanksgiving!! Sweet enough to put my sugar through the roof, but so darned delicious and definitely a keeper if I still cooked for the holidays...
