That is stunning. I've always enjoyed seeing those reliefs. So intricate. And what happens when you get almost done and break off a piece? Wonder how long it took to make it? Do you know what it's made out of?

I've examined the wood off and on over the years .. it's got a patina from age .. it's not a soft wood, my fingernail won't scratch the back .. it's pretty dense and about 10" in height .. I came to believe it's some type of oak, or a species I'm not familiar with .. yet, I find it very hard to believe the intricacy of the carving could be done in oak .. who ever carved it, had to have some very, very good and sharp hand tools .. it's a mystery and a marvel, to me, anyway ..

And, when you carve anything in wood, going with as well as against the grain makes it even more difficult to get that small detail and do it flawlessly ..

Also, if you look closely, you'll see fragments of color on some facial features, etc ..

As a woodworker, I have, over the years, collected bits of the craft, especially those I can find that exhibit what a Master can to .. this piece, which I believe is Japanese and from the 17th or 18th Century, is simply a marvel of the ability of the Master Carver .. whenever I look at it, I'm still amazed at the workmanship .. the years of dedication to the Craft is reflected ..

It's a beautiful piece of craftsmanship...:) If I may be so bold as to offer an opinion? Judging by the attire and the hairstyle on the child in the piece, I would guess it's more likely to be of Chinese origin...the caps on the figures and the shoes look to be Mandarin...;)

35-40 years ago, I bought two sets of antique Chinese wooden shutters. I gave one set to my Step-daughter for display in the Dojo she was planning, and the other to my Daughter. I can't imagine that they were ever meant to keep out weather or provide privacy unless perhaps they lined the backside with translucent rice paper or some such thing... ...as they are beautifully carved with trees, flowers, birds, deer, and possibly other things which I don't remember...

My SIL built a frame around my daughter's set and they are displayed above her sofa with a back light shining through them. I've asked her to send me a pic, and I'll post it when she does. Hopefully she will have that light turned on so you can see the beauty of the carvings...

I don't have any idea what kind of wood they are made of, but probably not the quality of what your piece is....then again, they were antiques and made in a time when many woods were more readily available...;)

Good morning :)

Hubs and I went to Orlando yesterday for the AKC dog show. We had a brief visit with Cathy (she was busy with work) but a brief visit and a biiiiig hug was great

We also stopped at a favorite vendor's greenhouse where I picked up this little beauty.

Willie this this piece is stunning! As far as figuring out its wood I bet a local musuem probably has someone on staff who can tell you what type of wood that is and maybe tell you about its actual age.

Good morning Bea. What a beautiful orchid and how nice you were able to touch base with Cathy.

That's a good idea about Willie taking his "sculpture" to a museum. If they can't tell him they should know who would be able to give some insight into the material, age and origin.

Hola .. :)

From the "What I Was Thinking Today as I Sipped My Coffee" file

While I understand that there may actually be Politicians that firmly believe they must do what they believe is the right thing and what they were Elected to do, and, that no one is above the law ..

At the same time, I would wonder if the General Populace, over the years, have just become more and more jaded over what our Leaders do, both in public and on the side .. I think, sometimes, that the word Politician has become synonymous with the word nefarious .. maybe not in all cases, but in many ..

This general feeling of numbness and reservation to what we, in many cases, expect out of our Leaders takes us to the point where we're just not going to care all that much .. the News Cycle, what it has (de)evolved to has not really helped matters, IMO .. the constant siren horn of News, clearly biased one way or the other, is as much a dividing factor as anything else out there ..

I think we've become much more Tribal in all those respects .. we select what we want to hear and what supports our own particular thought train .. and the Media is more than happy to play it that way .. and, when you really think about it, that is a form of Propaganda .. with all sides bearing guilt ..

Toss in the data farming done on/to us, and confirmation bias adds to the tribalism. The tendency is to only show search results that are in line with prior searches, so opposing views are never presented.

Yeah, the 24/7 "news" cycle... everything has to be "breaking news", and that story is then the only thing happening - until the next "breaking news."

Oh my @Uncle Willie you sure do have some beautiful photos to share with all of us.....

Thank you!! :)

Thanks .. I have a Chinese Junk .. (as in boat) .. complete with sails and small Sailors that folds up into itself and is stored in a wood box covered with decorative silk .. it's quite a marvel .. I'm going to root around and dig it out .. because, if you liked the relief, you're gonna love the Junk .. (no jokes on that, please ..) ..

Really nice. I also like the partitions that people used to change behind also, wood, cast iron, or bamboo w/rice paper. There were some really nice designs on some I've seen. That and cast iron spiral staircases, works of functional art.

The last couple of days, I've been doing some work on projects in the workshop. My woodworking skills are nowhere near the level of yours, @Uncle Willie, but I have a load of fun making my projects. I saw a photo of a portable pegboard holder that I think my daughter might like. And while cleaning off the top of the old freezer I found a tank bag for my motorcycle that was not of any use. I salvaged the magnets from it and I'm making an under-desk magnetic holder for a firearm. I saw one online and thought it would be fun to try making one. Time will tell.

Good morning? Anybody up? I woke up this morning and remembered that I didn't make the bird suet yesterday. So now it's in the fridge setting up. Think we're going to pass on the Christmas parade in the town where our son lives today. It's supposed to rain. Our daughter is coming here today. I want to mix up a batch of the springerle dough and make cut-out cookies that Hux can help decorate with us.

Speaking of Hux. He's now 3 years old and VERY excited about Christmas this year. His preschool is having a little Christmas program on Wednesday in the chapel where the kids are going to sing. He's walking around the house singing, "All I want for Christmas is my two crunchy". I don't think we're going to correct him for awhile.
