Hola ..
Yesterday's weather was absolutely spectacular, so, I thought, "the yard can wait .. I need to get out and about .." .. so, I hit the road around 9 AM ..
Pre-pandemic, I would periodically just get out of the house for a day and spend time time doing much of nothing around the STL area .. clearing my head, mainly ..
Hardee's Bacon, Egg and Cheese biscuit to start .. then, on to 4 different Furniture Stores, since I had been thinking seriously about getting a new recliner, mine getting a bit long in the tooth .. initially, I was dismayed to see that recliners seem to all be drifting toward the power style .. (not the medical lift type, but power recline / headrest / etc) .. very few old school manual recliners that looked any good at all, and not a huge price differential between power / no power .. I spotted one at Weekends Only and sat in it, playing with the power buttons for about 15 minutes, sales staff was thin to non-existent .. the recliner was just perfect, and, as a bonus, had an inflatable lumbar support balloon that was pure Nirvana .. hit the other 3 stores and saw nothing else like it, went back and ordered said recliner .. pick up in a week .. doing my bit for the economy ..
Time for lunch, hit Jack-In-The-Box for a pack of loaded tiny tacos and a Mountain Dew .. although I walked in, they were not allowing inside dining, so I had to take my order out to the truck and eat it ..
Headed over to Forest Park, home of the 1904 World's Fair, walked around the Zoo for a while (where Marlin Perkins got his start) .. the Zoo is still free, although parking is a little high ..
Next stop of the day was Best Buy, located within one of those shopper Mecca areas where large strip centers and eateries abound .. I like to check out the new tech and just look around .. the place was like a Ghost Town .. I'd bet at least a third of the shelves were bare, staff was thin to non-existent ..
Last stop, Golden Corral, which had re-opened several weeks back .. talked to the Manager for a minute, they had originally tried cafeteria style, that proved to be too much of a headache, so they roped the buffet off with directional signs, server brings plates / silverware, etc to the table, you must wear latex gloves / mask anytime you are not sitting at the table .. they did a good job .. fresh, tasty, clean ..
The culmination of my foray boiled down to :: I've never got so tired of putting on a mask / taking off a mask, and, as I drove around the shopping areas, I was simply shocked at the sheer number of closed Businesses .. in an area that was thriving pre-pandemic .. long time establishments now just, poof, gone .. I would estimate half to 3/4th of the businesses just plain gone .. it was weird ..
I had hoped that getting out and about would be mentally uplifting .. instead, it proved to be somewhat depressing (other than the Zoo) ..
The constant, constant reminder of the Pandemic, everywhere I went .. it could not be escaped .. what will eventually evolve out of this mess, I have no clue .. other than to be quite certain that, online Retailers will and have, continue to get the money and traffic ..
