Good morning. Pretty gloomy outside. Possible rain all day today so I guess Mike isn't going to have to play with the sprinklers today.

The last time I made suet for the birds I mixed in a half bottle of cayenne pepper thinking that would deter the squirrels. The metal grid squares are smaller so it's harder for them to get to the suet so they've been chewing on the suet holder itself. Well, they finally chewed enough of the holder that the metal grid fell out. So I set the suet cake on the table while I removed the holder so Mike could fix it. That da_n squirrel ran right over and commenced to devour the suet cake, cayenne and all. He picked up the whole thing in his mouth and tried to run away with it! ARRRRRRGH!

When the sun sets I've been sprinkling cayenne on the birdseed feeder and so far it doesn't look like the raccoon has bothered it. I should sprinkle some flour on the deck railing and see if there's any .... prints in the morning.

Must be a Southern Squirrel.

Happy Tuesday, thinkers :)

Seems our rain is done for a week or so, but we did get a good dose. Sadly, not much (if any) help to our southern neighbors.

Good morning/afternoon, all. I hope everyone is having a good day so far.
I will only mention that if you say UPS as a word, it comes out as "Oops!"
I was watching a show on NatGeo the other day and it was about firearms being bought in the USA and moved into Mexico. One of the young men was pointing at an AR-style rifle and was pointing at the USA stamp on the rifle and pronounced it as "Ooh Sa" vice USA. It makes me laugh just thinking of it, "Ooh Sa, Ooh Sa!"

Even though it was a late start getting to the farm, we had a great time getting the rifles sighted in. Dime-sized for the .243 and silver dollar for .50 caliber black powder rifles. I think I am getting the hang of shooting left-handed since I have lost sight in my right eye. Once I got over the initial workings of the camera, I have to say it really helped to simplify the process. It was nice not having to walk up and down the path to and from the target. Even though I have a good spotting scope it can be difficult seeing a .22 caliber hole at 100+ yards. The one main problem I had was the sun's glare on my tablet. I think my next investment will be in one of those foldable 10x10 aluminum framed canopies that folks use at flea markets and tailgate parties.

The only things we did was fill one of the feeders with corn and then set up the tables and targets. Never got to do any more checking out of the area. We are going to try going back out tomorrow and using the 4-wheeler to scope out the areas available and get more familiar with the area. We're going to set up a ground blind for me and Syndee to hunt out of and Steven will use a tree stand that is about 15 or so feet up the side of a sturdy tree. I have a tree stand but really don't fancy climbing up a ladder and sitting up there open to the weather. We still have about 3 weeks until Primitive Arms season opens on 10/24 to get everything together. Enjoy, All.

Good morning. We had some pouring rain last night so Mike won't have to water the grass. The sun is shining and it looks like the clouds are breaking up and moving on.

Unfortunately I forgot to sprinkle on the cayenne last night and sure enough, the seed feeder was emptied by the raccoon.

Hola .. :)

Around here, you rarely, if ever, see a raccoon in the daytime .. they generally seem to hang around territorially within an area where easy to get food is available ..

My 2 year long crusade of trapping these vermin resulted in at least a dozen, a couple of which were probably 20 pounders .. I'm fairly certain the word got out within the raccoon community, because there has been no evidence within at least 6-8 months ..

Some folks think there're cute .. Rocky Raccoon and all that jazz .. maybe stuffed and mounted on a base, but in real life, they are disease spreading wild animals .. if one ever bars it's teeth and snarls at you, you'll know ..

I'm sure they have their place in the food chain, but, to me anyway, the invasion of urban areas by various wildlife over the years is not a good thing ..

Had the thing been hanging on my deck rail, I'd been tempted to break out the old .22 and nail it, right then and there .. deer hunting season is designed to control the population, I vote for raccoon season, skunk season, possum season, groundhog season, etc ..
