It doesn't have to be. A large part of the cost is rent...If the landlords would turn down the greed a notch, then mom and pops could afford the rent. As it is, many national chains use profits to help subsidize their "flagship" stores in NY. I also believe that there is value in stores that have been around for over a hundred years, but it seems many others do not. It's sad...

It's the same across the nation, but from what I can tell, NY fights it harder than elsewhere. Sad indeed.
