My former neighbor was a movie watcher. He had movies on his puter b4 they were even in theatres. He had a RadioShak HD he stored them on - over 500 movies!

That would be "storage", HD. And you do need terabytes to store movie files.

For real JaG? I dint know that!

For real, sometimes when you post, it just puts your new post at the end WITHOUT refreshing the page. :)

NCC is right. You're talking different things...memory/RAM vs. storage/HD. :D

IDK, the clerk told me it would be hard to run out of storage.

That's right! Storage, but not the same as memory in puter speak. :)

Just as a human brain does thinking and memory in different parts of the brain, the puter does too. The "thinking" part of it is called memory, aka Random Access Memory (RAM). The actual "memory" or storage part of it is the hard drive generally. Confusing, I know.

As of now, the thinking/memory part of it is still limited to gigabytes, while the memory/storage part of it is up terabytes and more.

If you go to the My Computer icon on your desktop, right click on it, and select properties from the drop down menu, you should see your RAM displayed (among other things)

At least, that's the way it works in WinXP. I don't have 7.

It dint show me, so i went to my computer. Does 6.00 GB sound right?

I know what RAM and ROM is, but i thought a lot of ROM made the RAM run faster. Izzat wrong?

What I mean is if you have a lot of RAM, your computer should run faster, right?

ROM (Read Only Memory) is usually faster than RAM (IIRC). It is not volatile and not writeable. Instructions for some computer specific hardware may be stored in ROM, although I think this is less common than in years past.

The little computers of the 1980s often had their entire operating systems stored in ROM.

Likely more than your house, unless you've got a mansion.

I'm sorry Sea. I should've understood.

If there's a PC that could fit them, they're getting cheaper now, 4 GB for $30 or so. Since 1 TB is 1,000 GB, $30 x 1,000 = $30,000 for 4 TB. No need for a mansion. :D

Yes, the more RAM, the faster it runs, up to the "main chip" or processor/CPU limit.

ROM is Read Only Memory (as in it cannot change once something's burned in), but they added to confusion by using same name in different places. First, they called memory on a physical hardware, like a chip, ROM. Later, they called CD/DVDs ROM and in that case it's even STORAGE they're talking about!

Ha ha, NCC. You got a free car wash today driving in the storm. I take my car out for a short drive when it is really coming down furiously hard.
Actually, I'll be washing my car tomorrow. Got a date with the doctor on Moanday.

I haven't checked the price of RAM today. But, keep in mind, that $30K is just for the RAM. A computer which will utilize that much memory is quite another matter.

Here's one which comes with 1/83rd of a terrabyte. It will support twice that much, or 1/42nd of a terrabyte ... it is Maxed out at that point.
HP Z600
It's a Xeon Workstation, not your run of the mill desktop PC. Price, $4,300.

See what I mean, I shoulda stayed with a Mac. It was so easy. When I would run out of space when I did graphic design, I would just go down to Staples and by more memory. They were cute little tiny plastic pieces with teeth on them, and I just popped off the side of my CPU and stuck the little teeth in an open slot. IDK how to do that with PCs.

One time I ran out of empty slots, so I bought a peripheral HD called a Bernoulli. But, that was years ago.

Oh, never mind, I thought we were talking price just for the memory. That's why I said "if there's a PC". For that much memory, we're getting into multiple processor server territory and those will cost tens of thousands and up. :)

Well, dinner's ready, so lady and gent...I'll have to leave you soon...
