I'm quite torn between getting a LP Grand or one of the new Woodvils that are coming soon. What gives. Not to take anything away from the Woodvils (I'm sure they're absolutely killer) but I'm pretty sure the answer is that the LP Grand is the 'precursor' to the Woodvil - ie. silly to have a Woodvil if you don't have a Grand. Am I right? I just find the wood very appealing, but of course I want the best performance

Nope - not silly at all to run woodies instead of or in addition to metal reos. Many reonauts prefer the wooden mods and some collect them in the dozens (I'm taking a charitable view on obsession, nerak :)). Each one is unique and a work of art.

For others, the maximum sturdiness of the metals fits their lifestyles better.

I have both styles and tend to use them for different vaping needs, with the woods generally not leaving the house (my choice, not a requirement of the mod) and being used for quiet sit-down vaping sessions. My metals have been to hell and back.

Thought as much. Well I always have a black wrinkle mini 2.0 for when I'm living dangerously. Will literally still be here when I'm not, heh

I must suggest a Grand for your first REO.

They are so indestructible that a day of outdoor, heavy labor is faced with a Grand your silent partner. It is always there and always ready to give you the vape you deserve. You won't have to worry about grabbing it with hands that are dirty from working. Yes, it may get dirty but a quick rinse and scrub when you get home will bring it right on back to the new look.

A Woodvil is magical. The hand work done bring it up to masterpiece status. The finish is smooth begging you to rub your wood! (whoops, sorry). They are made to be a daily PV. But most of us see them and quickly make the decision that they need to be treated kindly. The woods can crack from a hard fall. They can chip and dent which brings tears to our eyes.

Go look at my profile photos. I have a nice collection of the wood REO's. The different woods, grains, textures and colors lured me in. Mine are delegated to inside use. I have a cover for one Woodvil that I take out on occasion. I am always careful to where it is placed. I always have Grands with me when out. I cover them also but they give me the peace of mind that a fall on pavement will at the most give them minor scratching.

Grab a REO. I am sure you will join the rest of us and soon have a second. But remember, the first one you buy will make REO's become your PV of choice. You will want it wherever you go.

Choose wisely!

Haha best sales pitch ever from Nerak, espeially the last section.

I like the looks of woodvils, but I wouldn't buy one. I'm like fairtradesloth. I don't throw my on the ground in videos, but I drop mine at least 2-3 times a day. Hitting tile, wood floor, or concrete. A couple love marks (dents, scratches, and so forth) but still works just as good as day one. I like durable, I don't want to be scared to use something. If I ever got a woodvil, I'd buy like a glass case for it and not one drop of juice would touch the thing.

As an automotive mechanic I tend to rough up my REO's. I just couldn't bear to damage a woodi. To me a Woodville is a highly functional collector item good for those who are not like me.

My first post in this sub-forum was of a mini that was roughed up reaaaal bad and despite this, it still functions every bit as good as it did before it got run over multiple times. I have learned that the metal mods are what I need to save myself from me.

I just have to figure out how to attach a gps to them now.

I'm not so sure there is such a thing as a wrong Reo to own. It just comes down to what works best for you is the right Reo for you. With me it is true that while more flamboyant is better when it comes to the figure and natural colors of woods, bright colors don't work as well for me on metal Reos. So all of my metals are neutral colors. For using... I learned long, long ago that fine wood is to use daily, not to baby or tuck away. Most boo boos in wood can be fixed. So for my uses wood doesn't take a backseat to metal at all. I love the feel and look of most wood Reos, I love the feel and look of some metal Reos (the color thing)... just my personal preferences.

At present 5 of my Reos are wood, that mainly because during my first few months buying Reos the Woodvil's up for sale were limited, and I was not always in line fast enough for those that were. I was lucky to get these though, have 14500's, 18650's and an 18490. No more bought since because I have been waiting for the Mech Woodvil's. I love the feel and depth of wood, have been a fine woods guy all my life, the higher the grade of it the better, be it furniture or for firearms or crafted into most anything. I crafted high grade exotic woods myself for over 50 years, mostly as a hobby but some for business, still have a stash of it left over. Many friends over the years cringed when I went in the field hunting with them packing factory or custom firearms often wearing wood with a higher to much higher value than the firearm itself. But I took care of them even in the field, if anything got scratched or bumped out there it was me and not the firearm... I don't drop things, including PV's. So almost always its a Woodvil or two that goes with me on outings, to run errands, the wee hours of the night walks, etc. I use the 18650's all day and all night every day and night, the mini wood mostly for walks and short errands. The metal Grands and VVG gets used exactly the same, all day and all night... the mini's will never see as much use. My getting into larger footprint atty's has required buying LP's now. So 4 of the 7 metals are LP's, and most if not all of my future Reos will be Mech Woodies and LP Grands (maybe a Resin or two) to be the most versatile for running the ever growing stash of atty's for the Reos. That's my plan anyway, what I think will work the best for my uses. At least until Rob dreams up something new that gets my full attention. ;)

@Spydro, I hear you - I also go for neutral/earth colours. When you say you're waiting for the mech woodvil what do you mean? Do the ones coming on sale soon operate differently to the metal ones? I thought the only non-mechanical Reos are the VV ones. Also, how do you take care of your wood things (besides not damaging them)? Do you apply varnish to your woodvil from time to time?

My Grands have not been to Hell and back. They have been to Cleveland and back, Pittsburgh and back, Springfield, MA and back, Knoxville and back.... you get the picture. This old Trucker carries Reos Grands (2) with every run. They are literally indestructible. I have a beautiful Oak Woodvil that lives an entirely different lifestyle. It almost always stays at home. Only travels when I am taking my wife out to dinner, movie, or attending some sort of social function.
Many Reonauts do this sort of thing. Now, when the Resin mods come out, we'll all be saying ...........

The new "mech" Woodvil's are put together a bit differently than previous Woodvil's. They use different switches, contacts and different wiring that makes them sub ohm capable. Technically, not a mech in the sense of how many people define a mechanical since they have point to point wiring (all Woodvil's do), but with many of the advantages of a mechanical. Rob posted pictures on the innards... somewhere.. in this thread. ~> http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/reos-mods/625024-mechanical-woodvil-prototype.html

Care depends on what finish Rob applies. Some are poly and don't need much at all. Some are "natural" and need regular waxing. This gets talked about more during and right after every Woodvil sale.

I think every answer above (and prolly those below too) will be on point.

My feelings, having owned several of both:

Woodvils are extremely beautiful and feel like nothing else in hand. Just amazing to hold.

Grands are extremely beautiful and feel like nothing else in hand.

Woodvils, being that they are made of wood, can absorb oils and contaminants from your hands, juice that spills in the mod and cannot be washed. There are Woodvils with finishes that can prevent some of the above, but I can smell / taste those coatings in the vape. In my opinion, anything that goes in ones hand needs to be washable. Not wiped, washed - like in a sink.

Additionally if it holds juice, like a bottom feeder does, that further emphasizes the need to be able to wash it. Not only for sanitary reasons, but they can absorb and hold flavors.

I also believe that a clumsy dumb ayuss like me needs a mod with a connector that is in a material that cannot be cracked or lose grip. I run mostly big top heave attys and would worry about my unscrewing and rough handling of the attys resulting in connector looseness over time.

That is why I own only grands and I am damn happy with grands. Don't see myself ever having any other type of mod. Yes, I am allured by the resin because I believe it'll have the same qualities of a grand when it comes to washability. But, for now, I have come to realize that it is not only the obvious sturdiness of a grand that appeals to me, it's the ability to keep them damn near sterile that I love.

I'm kinda a freak though so if your a normal person, please disregard my post entirely. :)

If you have any doubts about the durability of a Woodvil, you could try what I did ;

Prior to the most recent Woodvil Run, I emailed Rob himself and informed him that while I thought the Woods were beautiful, I am the kind of person who can fumble, table-dribble and / or drop-kick just about anything. Rob informed me that Woodvils are not for abusive vapers, and that I should stay away from long grained woods. He also recommended Curly Oak and Lace Wood, and that I should avoid Ebony and Purple Heart all together. Following his advice led me to narrow my search, and now I have this Curly Oak beauty. It has a Polyurethane finish, that gets waxed anyways, and every once in a blue moon I use a Q-tip with mineral oil on the inside to try to neutralize any residual flavor from inside the mod.
Woodvil.jpg

When the pictures go up on the Reos Mods website, and people start drooling on their keyboards, I will once again try to contact Rob and ask about the durability of the Woods in this current run. I am quite impressed with Rob's woodworking abilities, but I also know What I am capable of putting a mod through.

I think a lot of people underestimate the Woodvil's abilities. I have probably a 50/50 split between wood mods of various kinds and metal ones. My Woodvil is an oak one from about run #3 that i bought on the classies.

It's quite robust, has shrugged off a few gentle drops without issue and is able to run coils as low as 0.5Ω although i prefer 1Ω in it. Because all the woods are one-offs, they get more sympathetic treatment than my metal ones. They do not get used as my all day vape and unlike the metal ones, i will not run my usual 0.3Ωcoils in them!

One reason most of the woods stay at home is the evil humidity at times here, which can play havoc with the doors on them.

I see Rick already answered some of your questions about the upcoming Woodvil's. My main interest in the new Woodvil's will be the ability to put larger diameter atty's on them than I can on my current Woodvil's.

Varnish would be among the last things I would put on my Woodvil's, in fact I wouldn't. But then I stopped using over the counter wood finishes on my crafted woods around 1990. After that I developed, mixed and cooked my own finishes from pure imported ingredients where I alone controlled what was in them, and enjoyed the improved results I got from them. I would refinish them all with my own finishes, but what's left of my wood shop is in storage and my health says those days are over. So I did buy the Howard SunShield wood conditioner that many folks here use on theirs. But since 4 of mine are sprayed with gloss something (unfortunately), probably only one will actually see the Howard's occasionally.
