Now that I'm vaping seriously, I find that my lungs begin to hurt as the day goes on. This is gradually getting worse. It's now a quarter past ten in the morning where I am, and the ache has already begun. I'm probably doing it wrong, but I don't see how to suck -- through a vaporizer, straw, or anything else -- without some effort from my lungs. The sensation reminds me of drawing smoke through a [moderated], way back in the day.

I've already read the article on proper vaporizer inhalation:

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/ecf-library/337017-inhalation-technique-e-cigarette.html

I've tried leaving a gap between my lips and the mouth of the head, so that I'm not pulling on the vaporizer alone. I think this helps, but it doesn't fix it.

I must be sucking too hard. I must be doing it subconsciously, trying to get more vapor. I've done everything I know to maximize vapor -- gone to a liquid with more VG and almost always keeping the VV on maximum.

Will this go away by itself as my technique improves, or are there other changes I can make to help things now?

Personally I do not "suck" on the vaporizer. I use my mouth to "puff" then inhale the hit. Works way better for me. When I first started to vape I used to hit it like a analog smoke. This didnt work for me. It had a tendency to over load the cartomizer and start gurgling with little or no vapor, allowing the liquid to enter into my mouth and throat causing it to burn or sting.

Sucking with your cheeks until you have a mouthful of smoke and then either letting it sit there and exhaling or doing a lung/semi lung inhale.

I do the first part then inhale just enough to blow the vapour through my nostrils (supposedly more nicotine is absorbed from the vapour through the membranes in the mouth and nose than the lungs since the particle sizes of vapour and smoke are different).

Also, PG can have the effect of drying out the mouth and throat - and most likely the lungs too - try an all VG liquid and see if that helps at all.

What equipment are you using? Possibly something where you could increase the airhole does help on the strain. You could also just do a mouth hit which would just use you sucking instead of using your lungs.

Sucking with our mouths does use our lungs. That's part of the problem. If you spent the entire day drinking through a straw, your lungs would eventually ache.

Were it otherwise, we could just pull things into our mouths with this other method and just naturally breathe in whatever is in our mouths. Unfortunately, our bodies don't work that way. Our lungs create the vacuum in our mouths which lets things get sucked into our mouths.

Cigarettes are less problematic in this way, at least for the experienced user, because we can simply "mouth-breathe through" the cigarette and get only the tiny resistance of the filter. Those who have ever used bongs will know what I mean, though.

I'm experimenting. Are you using your cheeks as a sort of bellows, moving air in and out? That works, sort of, but lets a lot of vapor escape. If that's the method you're using, you're seeing a lot of vapor moving from the device/mouth connection during the drag portion. Is that what you're seeing?

EDIT: I've never seen that effect in any pictures or videos of people vaping. As far as I can tell, most people suck (no pun intended).

Not sure if your puffing with only your mouth. I can breath in and out of my nose at the same time I use my cheeks and tongue to draw or puff. I do not use my lungs, my tongue totally blocks the passageway to my throat as I pull it back like a plunger.

This explains it best

It's kind of difficult to explain.

I put the drip tip in my mouth, no gaps, no spaces. Suck with my cheeks (imagine you have a thorn stuck in your finger, would you suck on it with your lungs? No...) take the vapor into my mouth. At this point you can hold it in your mouth and breath normally through your nose if you want - all day long.
Then I take it into my lungs - some prefer not to, I like it.

(kind of gross, but think about trying to suck a piece of food out of your teeth)

Also, it's better to do slow, smooth draws with less 'sucking' than trying to get too much from the e-cig too quickly - I draw for 4-5 seconds on a long drag if I need a 'hit' - any longer than that and I'll choke on it :D

I take lots of small puffs too but they're more for effect than anything else - short draws don't vaporize the nicotine very well (the atomizer needs to get hot enough).
