Torey, yes, you need protected batteries...I think. I am using imr 18500 batteries in there

from my galaxy s4

with a mech mod you should always use protected batteries as there's no wires, no circuitry like a regulated mod that has built in protections (but even still you should use protected batteries, but not as necessarily needed)
