What does a kick do?
Kick makes a mech mod into a variable wattage mod. It regulates from 5 watts to 15 watts and acts as a safety between u and the battery. Its perfectly safe to use it without the kick it's just added protection. Pull the kick out and u will see a blue dial with lines the first line to the left is 5watts and the far right 15watts. U turn it with a Phillips head screw driver.
I like 7 to 9 watts personally
