Hi all--

I am family doc about to finish Residency and will be submitting a 'Clinical Inquiry' article to be pulished for use as a point-of-care reference for physicians and providers.
Title: "Are electronic cigarettes a safe and effective method for smoking cessation?"

I just gave a presentation at my hospital of my literature review on this topic and it was well recieved. Nothing breath taking or novel but as a vaper and a doctor I think it is important to continue to educate the medical community about the potential benifits of vaping based on currently available evidence. This approach will disseminate the information in forum that doctors will take notice. Hopefully this can serve as one more stepping stone for forward progress...

I will keep you updated over the coming months. If you are interested in seeing my power point I am happy to email it along.

Dr B!

Interesting endeavor - will this be a lit review? Would love to see the PP presentation. Also, have you joined the MD/Health forum here at the EFC? May get some useful info there as well.

Good to have you here -- welcome !

Yes, 'Clinical Inquiries" basically are a review on the best quality literature available ( ie Meta-analyses, Randomnized Contrtol Trials, etc) of which clearly there is minimal for e-cigs. Then there is basically a yes or no answer to the question with a 'Strength of Recommendation" grade of A-D , 'A' being based on high quality eveidence and down from there. They are usually published in relavent medical journals like: Journal of Family Practice ( JFP) or American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) etc.

I am not sure how to message on here but if you can find a way to get me your email I will pass along my pwer point.

Thanks for the warm welcome! I'm actually a long time lurker, Just had to post in the New mebers section for my requisite 5 posts!

Wishing the OP the best of luck with future research. Go for broke, man--be as comprehensive with this as you can, do us a favor, and get the medical community to give your research serious thought and consideration.

And, definitely, post here often :)

Thank you much for your enthusiasm and support!

actually this is not any orignal research though, and unfortunatly very little has been done. I'm sure most people here know most of what I have compliled but you are right that at least gettign the info out there to people outside the vaping community, particuarly health care providers, is important. At this point, with the track record of dismal effectiveness for other NRTs, from what I've seen, all the average doc would need to recommend this to patients is to be assured of ( relative) safety.

How cool would that be to whip out a Rx pad and write...
"Ejoy- 18mg/mL, 10 puffs, Q10min PRN, disp#12, unlimited refills!"

Health care providers don't want to know anything that isn't written as viewed "as gospel" by the medical community. Take it upon yourself to be the Magellan in this endeavor. Think beyond what your medical colleagues may say at first, and take your research as far as you possibly can. Trust me when I say that at least half the doctors out there have abslutely no idea about the true merits of e-cigs, due to a simple lack of information.
