Ok ok, you keep hearing of "easier ways" to make a micro coil. Here is the HANDS DOWN EASIEST WAY YET.

thanks to @flavored for coming up with this killer idea. :)

Love it. I know some people who want to use an RBA but worry about wrapping because if arthritis, hand pain, or shaky hands. This tool is perfect to address those issues.

Anybody find a 2 or 2.25mm mandrel for the coil winder? The second smallest seems to be about 1.5mm and the next biggest is 3mm I think.

I might have to get off my lazy .... & go poke around Home Depot if not...

I also wanted something 2mm. The non deluxe set which does not come with built-in table-mount base comes with a so called 2mm mandrel. I say so called because it actually measures 1.8mm on my caliper. I also did not realize when I ordered that it does not come with the built-in table-mount base :(

I got the deluxe version that has a table mount, Artistic Wire Coiling Gizmo(R) Deluxe Winder for Jewelry Making. I measured the mandrels with my calipers and got 1.0 mm., 1.55 mm., 3.2 mm., 4.0 mm. and 4.8 mm.

I don't think it would be too difficult find a suitable size and to bend one of those brass or aluminum rods one sees at the hardware store and hobby shops. Hobby Lobby has brass rods in 1/16" and 3/64", Brass Rods.

I just cut up a clothes hanger that I had available which measured out to 2.23mm and then bent it to shape.

I've wrapped a couple coils on it, and it works alright. :)

I checked out the brass 3/32" rods they had at hobby lobby - might be a little too malleable for the coil gizmo application, but maybe not.

I was too cheap to throw another $4 bucks at it so I used my drill bit kit for my dremmel to rebuild my chicas vivi nova heads. Holy crap that thing is tricky to rebuild! The pro tanks are a breeze compared to those.

My fingers hurt a good bit now, but I think I may just stick to the drill bit approach instead of the coil winder. With a good pair of tweezers and a little pen torch (man that thing is fun to play with!), I've been getting my wraps pretty tight!

I made a mistake and used the smallest rod in the Artistic Wire Gizmo and 30ga kanthal, 12 wraps and came out with a 1.6ohm coil that was too tiny to put cotton through for me. I think I also did not have the coil close enough to the edge of the Igo-L. Used rolled cotton ball for wick. It vaped ok for a little bit but was producing almost no flavor and very little vapor.

Just did another one on the second smallest rod with 28ga kanthal, 10 wraps. Also came out with a 1.6ohm coil that had no hot legs and mounted it closer to the edge. Just started vaping it on Igo-L. Much better vapor and flavor. We will see how this one lasts.

I was aiming for a 2.0 or 2.2ohm coil. With 28ga on the second smallest rod (1.50 or 1.55mm) how many wraps will get me there? And if I decide to use the 30ga instead, how many wraps do I need?

Never thought I could make a coil. This is extremely exciting. I just got my Russian 91% in the mail yesterday so I need to get a couple of good coils built and working so I can try it out.

Somewhere out there
www.youtube.com
I read somewhere that SXD has a vid for "coiling with tension" any chance that can get posted? I'm lazy and don't want to search for it :p

Here's two :)

I cut a chunk off of a slab of pencil eraser and press it into my spool of Kanthal to Keep it organized, allow me to slide it around to let out / take up wire and act as a brake to get great tension too :)
