All of the Fleetwood Mac talk a few pages ago reminded me of several things--including that I was forced to sing a karaoke version of "You Make Loving Fun" during my bachelor party. Now, my singing is best done in the shower (my wife disputes this--she thinks it should be outlawed everywhere) and only gets worse after many alcoholic beverages, so I was surprised when many people who were not part of the bachelor party came up to me and said that I was really good. There were three songs that my friends made me sing: the aforementioned one, "Don't You Want Me" by (yes) Human League, and this gem by Carl Douglas. (Perhaps even scarier--I didn't have to read the lyrics for any of the songs....).

Cool tune and story to match!

Funny you should mention....we have a massive karaoke collection/outfit at our house. I just bought a new wide screen monitor for it, (yes, my vision stinks). Man we must have over 500 songs, ranging from Sinatra to Slayer. :laugh:Usually one weekend or so a month, we get around 10-15 friends over to share a few beverages and sing. Wow..is it FUN! I usually have the few pro singers I know try to sit most of it out...and let everyone else enjoy. Then they have a go once everyone else is burned out...;)

And yes...some of my buddies sound like nails on a chalkboard, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. Good times indeed.

1. Enjoying this song today. Slowing getting out the funk I've been in.

Yesterday I said I was 42, I'm 41
doh_smilie_zpsa710f5c1.gif
my daughter informed me of that when her friend asked me how old I was yesterday and I said 42. Is it a sign of old age, when you can't remember how old you are?

Hey, that's really cool! You became a year younger in just a day. Throw some of that miraculous youth my way! (43 here)

I have also been enjoying these videos....It was only a few years ago that I found YT and I used to spend hours going through these old MTV videos.......
(Slaughter was next on my list after this).............LOL....

Yea...Youtube is a treasure trove indeed! Lot's of really cool entire concerts too...;)

Good stuff!

This song has good and bad memories... Daft Punk is one of those cds I used as 'driving' music. This was on when I managed to defeat the speed limiter on my little blue Mitsu go fast.

Was forced to sell the car last year.... hubby said it was time I grew up and got a practical car. One that can get on top of our mountain in the snow... my suggestion was that we move south and live on flat land... he frowned at that. I now own a 6 cylinder Subaru Outback... the WRX was nixed by my hubby too... that has a big dent in the front fender over the tire where a deer ran onto me a few weeks ago.

Reminds me of the summertime memories of long ago. Remember just driving down the road in the summer and hearing that voice & song on the radio. Janis Joplin came across so different from other version's of Summertime that I had heard! :2cool: :vapor:

Definitely was a phenomenal singer. Very powerful....very heartfelt. Janis had such a sad life story, and she belted it out through her singing.
It's almost like you can feel her pain. Too bad she left us so soon...:(

Good one!

Kitty has more interesting stories about music in Southern California than do I, but after Pasadena's KROQ, 91X in San Diego was one of the earlier "Rock of the 80s"-format stations and was huge with a lot of kids in my age group. (Ironically, the house I grew up in was occluded from 91X's signal, so I grew up listening to KROQ.) For both stations, one of the more popular bands was a funny outfit that had recently shed the trappings of being Mystic Knights. I still have the 4-song EP with the cat on it from which this "original version" comes (although my understanding is that it really is the second recording of the song...)

VERY cool, Kitty! You are a walking plethora of music information. Awesome! I bet we could sit down with a good pot of coffee or other beverage of your choice and have a killer Music conversation. :)

Keep'em coming!

Bri

I grew up surrounded by music, thanks to being born and raised in the L.A. area... and although I was too young to go to a lot of the clubs, they were kind enough to build a sports area (which later started having concerts) right across the street from me in the late 60's... LOL!!

And I had a lot of older friends that would keep me updated on all of the happenings, not to mention a couple of record stores in town that would play all of the new stuff when it came out, too.

I started listening to KROQ back when they were simulcast on AM and FM, which kinda saved me back then because I had a job where I drove a company car that only had an AM radio!!

There was a great station out of Long Beach (KNAC) that started out commercial free, but I had a hard time picking it up when I moved down to the beach because the PV Peninsula was in the way. I could get better reception in my car, and could even get 91X sometimes, too. I'm surprised you got KROQ all the way down in SD!!

But the radio back in the late 60's couldn't be beat!! Some of the AM stations back then were better than the FM ones that were around later...

I first heard about 'The Mystic Knights' from a friend who had a comedy troupe and played on some of the same bills with them... but the 1st time I ever saw them was here... :D

I saw them in a club much later, when they had become more serious about the music and were gaining a lot of popularity... although I am still shocked by Danny Elfman doing all of those movie soundtracks now!!

Thinking back about some more of the musical/comedy troupes... there was another one who later dropped some of their name and became just 'Roto', or sometimes 'Roto the Wonder Band'... but always with a bit of humor thrown in for good measure!!

Here they are from the early daze... :D

I guess it just goes to prove how careers can morph over time.

It wasn't until 1983 that I could reliably pick up KROQ with a radio with a decent antenna--and even then there were still periods during which all I got was static. But I still have fond memories of listening to the likes of Poorman, Sam Freeze, Jed the Fish, Dusty Street, Katy Manor, Swedish Eagle, Richard Blade, and Rodney on the Roq. I also remember this:

I was going to post this earlier but I got sidetracked somehow... ;) LOL!!

Grace Slick wrote this song for a member of the band who was the 1st one to turn 30. There was a saying back then about 'not trusting anyone over 30', so it kinda was a big deal I guess...

I have a girlfriend who's husband was quite a few years older than us, and when he and his friends all started turning 30 this became their theme song as well, and I carried on the tradition as we all hit our 30's, too.

Now that I think of it, that was the same g/f who played Alice Cooper's '18' for her daughter when she turned that age... I wonder if she'll play this for her when she's 30?? :?: LOL!!

Anyway, it's a beautiful song, by a beautiful lady, with a beautiful voice... but I always wondered where she got the Irish accent?? :D Ha!

Late one night many years ago my ex-husband wanted me to hear a certain song. He lit a candle and turned off the lights. I thought he was going to play something romantic to get me in the mood. We had quad speakers and when this song started playing it scared the daylight out of me and gave me goosebumps.

***CHIT CHAT*** Good Grief, I haven't heard that in a while and have a few memories of that playing but not going to go into that but thanks for playing it cause I actually like it too thayamax :pop:
