Kitty has more interesting stories about music in Southern California than do I, but after Pasadena's KROQ, 91X in San Diego was one of the earlier "Rock of the 80s"-format stations and was huge with a lot of kids in my age group. (Ironically, the house I grew up in was occluded from 91X's signal, so I grew up listening to KROQ.) For both stations, one of the more popular bands was a funny outfit that had recently shed the trappings of being Mystic Knights. I still have the 4-song EP with the cat on it from which this "original version" comes (although my understanding is that it really is the second recording of the song...)

We "Floridians" grew up with the station Zeta7 (WZTA) in the late 70's-early 80's. They played a wide variety of music from early Punk to of course...80's. Dr. Deminto came on every Sat. night at 11PM (remember that?) I believe that's the station I first heard Eddie Van Halen's "Eruption" guitar solo. We were on the way to Sebastian, which always has good waves (if you want to call them that

)...
three of us with our boards strapped on an old Mercury Cougar. Two guitar players and a drummer. After the solo was over...I actually pulled the car over in a stupor. We looked at each other and said "What the %&@$ was that? Was that a guitar?"

Blew us away!! My guitar playing was forever changed at that moment...
Zeta7 soon went off the air after that, sadly. Half the "Rockers" in Fl. drove around for years with an upside-down Zeta7 tag on the front of their cars in protest...since they were replaced by a Disco station!
