The 1st time I came to Okinawa karaoke wasn't even known in the States as far as I know but it was big over here (still is). The bars that had the newer setups were using the disk/cartridge thing - slide the whole big thing into the machine and pull the plastic sleeve out leaving the disk in. They had a limited selection of songs with most of them being in Japanese but they did have a few in English. Whenever we went to a local bar we were always asked to sing (didn't matter that we weren't any good). This was one we always had to do.

Kitty has more interesting stories about music in Southern California than do I, but after Pasadena's KROQ, 91X in San Diego was one of the earlier "Rock of the 80s"-format stations and was huge with a lot of kids in my age group. (Ironically, the house I grew up in was occluded from 91X's signal, so I grew up listening to KROQ.) For both stations, one of the more popular bands was a funny outfit that had recently shed the trappings of being Mystic Knights. I still have the 4-song EP with the cat on it from which this "original version" comes (although my understanding is that it really is the second recording of the song...)

[/QUO

We "Floridians" grew up with the station Zeta7 (WZTA) in the late 70's-early 80's. They played a wide variety of music from early Punk to of course...80's. Dr. Deminto came on every Sat. night at 11PM (remember that?) I believe that's the station I first heard Eddie Van Halen's "Eruption" guitar solo. We were on the way to Sebastian, which always has good waves (if you want to call them that:laugh:)...three of us with our boards strapped on an old Mercury Cougar. Two guitar players and a drummer. After the solo was over...I actually pulled the car over in a stupor. We looked at each other and said "What the %&@$ was that? Was that a guitar?" Blew us away!! My guitar playing was forever changed at that moment...

Zeta7 soon went off the air after that, sadly. Half the "Rockers" in Fl. drove around for years with an upside-down Zeta7 tag on the front of their cars in protest...since they were replaced by a Disco station!

#1. These guys swept into America with a force. Jumping to number 1 on the Billboard chart with music that you had to sing and dance to. Played the hell out of these songs in college.

Oh Yea...good stuff!

The singer was touring around doing an acoustical/solo thing awhile back. VERY cool indeed.

Great band..and yes, they swept America by storm! ;) BTW...where'd I put that Vegemite sandwich?
