Still stalking the mailman :(

@ BogeyJim. I've noticed big changes in #7 as it steeps.

Also has been pointed out I really think that more exploration is needed into some of the NET's. Mudflap mentioned 3 months(!) of steeping for extraction of some of his NET's. Might this explain some of Ben's supply issues? I just started on the NET's so this is going to take some time.

@ BogeyJim. I've noticed big changes in #7 as it steeps.....just like Boba's does...

Mr Mudflap appears to be is using a different extraction method than the "Shot-glass/microwave" method we have been discussing for NETs....that's why there appears to be a dis-connect (I think we were discussing the shot-glass method...I'm reading so many threads that I get confused at times :) ).

There are many ways to do extractions; chemical, heat, mechanical, or just let the tobacco/tea/whatever sit in PG/ VG/Alcohol/water for a few months. Each method produces slightly different results because different flavorants & alkaloids are released dependent on method, but for our purposes, the extracts are so close that I doubt most people would notice the difference in a three-month steep extraction vs a few seconds in a microwave ....other than nicotine - I still maintain that using the microwave technique releases SOME nicotine into the extract, but that's just my take...I'm down to 6mg nic in my juices, and I definitely notice a stronger nic buzz if I add nic juice to my cigar extracts.

Without a full chemical analyses, its difficult to know whats in the extracts, but the fact that one method of producing pure nicotine from tobacco is using plain water & heat....so there is that. No biggie though...at the volumes & concentrations we are dealing with with these home-made extractions, I doubt there's really that much to worry about.

Do what you wish, just passing on my experiences...

Thanks for the input everyone. I'll let this steep a week and see where it's at.

Do you unscrew the cap for the entire steep time? Or just let it marinate with cap on?

I usually leave the cap off for the first 24-48 hours, then seal it back up & let it sit. You can give it a shake every day to mix it up if you like, but its not necessary. Your patience will be richly rewarded :)

Yeah, it's the shotglass/microwave technique that has been being discussed. Very fast. :)

When you say you leave the cap off, does this include the little dripper tip on the bottle? Just curious!

After 2 days steeping (I know impatient ...), I realize the black mile is still on top of all others. Is it just me or this tobacco is too coconutty! Will try the other recipe with cherry next.

With most of these tobacco-based recipes, the flavors change dramatically from one day to the next during the first week or so, just like fresh Boba's does. Give it a few more days, and it will most likely taste completely different. Different flavors come to the fore as the juice steeps and the compounds dissolve into the juice....and over time, they all blend together & produce the complex flavors we are all trying to achieve, but it may take up to a month for all the flavors to blend together.....again - just like Boba's. A one-month+ Boba's tastes completely different than right out of the vape-mail.

Just leave the top as open as you can (remove the tip). The goal is to get as many of the volatiles ("Perfumy" ingredients) a chance to de-gas and evaporate... I usually just remove the tops and put them in a dark cabinet so I (or one of my wife's cats), don't knock them over...

Have you noticed that Boba's changes from day-to-day as it ages? Changes drastically?

I cannot attest to this being a certainty, or not. At least, I cannot discern a difference based on the age of the juice itself.

However!

I do notice an astounding difference in flavor the longer I vape Boba's. Sometimes I like the way it tastes after my taste cells have become accustomed to flavor, other times (more often recently) I prefer the taste of it with a fresh palate. I keep the palate fresh/retain that flavor that Boba's has when you haven't had it in a while by vaping other homemade juices. Mix up the palate, keep the Boba's taste train rolling.

Levitas,

It's a bit off topic but I notice you are from St Louis (I grew up there). Are you involved at all with the St Louis vapers? A friend of mine from St Louis who is kind of active with that group is responsible for introducing me to vaping options beyond cigalikes!

I am about to venture into DIY. I am a boba's addict who has run out of boba's and currently am surviving on some other tobacco-based juices (HHV dragon fire, dorky stud, VCV white beard, grumpy's hooch, Aroma dark honey tobacco, etc). I want to try the Boba's clone recipe but the B&M+ has been out of stock forever (probably because no one can get Boba's). Do you have any recommendations for a decent tobacco-based DIY recipe for a newbie?

Thanks in advance for any advice! Of course, any of you more experience DIYer's please feel free to chime in here :)

I am not involved in the vaper's club, no. It's not because I don't want to be, it's just because it's in St.Charles, and I'm in Fenton (30-40 minute commute, one way), and I'm generally busy with class work, and exams to study for ;)

As for a good tobacco, that is difficult to recommend. It seems you enjoy HHV, so, I'm most likely not the best candidate to recommend a flavor since I don't really like their juices :) But, some general advice might be: Purchase quite a few flavorings, and test them one by one. You can read reviews on those that are generally liked by most, and start there. But the simple fact is, no one can tell you what you like 'cept you.

I, much like many here, will be around if you have any questions about anything.

Day 3 on the steep..... It's smelling better, more so like Boba's but still has that strong cherry note in it.... I gotta get rid of that! Hopefully it'll have that red tint that boba's has soon, that would make my day!! :)

Steeping takes patience I'm quickly learning! Problem here is I only made a 10mL bottle to test the blend. If it turns out really good I'll have to make a bigger bottle then wait again. It's a fun process anyways :)

Haha, that's exactly what I was thinking. Luckily I did make 2 batches of 10ml, one with AP and one without.. I only added a small drop of AP to one of them (from those teeny tiny pipettes that came with my TFA order I think?) And I have two 5ml batches of #8 (again, one with AP and one without) - that one is red and smells like cherry, but I also used a different cherry (LorAnn) so hopefully it'll be good still..
I'm on day 3 of steeping.. they steeped for a day capped, and now I have them opened and I will recap them tomorrow.. maybe I'll taste it then (I haven't even tried it yet.. didn't feel like setting up new coils or anything, nor did I have time)

After using many different types of tobacco bases (7-8 at this point), I'm going to extract tobacco tonight.

Purchased some Captain Black regular, and will attempt the quick extraction method mentioned in another stream using the microwave, shot glasses, a syringe and some cotton. I also like the idea of using the Keuring filter method for the intitial press.

BTW...walked into a tobacco shop for the first time in 3 1/2 years, the smell was incredible....senses never go away!

I went into a smoke shop to get some butane after I quit smoking.. there was a group of people smoking cigars and it was so nasty smelling I couldn't even stand it! Honestly it was even too much when I was smoking cigarettes.. but man! Blegh!

Cigars are an acquired taste..I love the smell of them. That being said, the smell of people smoking cigarettes makes me almost physically ill now, though I smoked 2+ packs a day for over thirty years.... go figger...

Tried my #7 and #8's, they've only been steeping for 3 days, though, I've got to give it more time.
#7 was a bit too cinnamony for me so hopefully that will mellow out. #8 was pretty tasty so far. I liked both of the juices that had AP in them more.. I might put a tiny bit more in them. I have a feeling I will use AP very much (albeit sparingly).
I'm excited to start tweaking them all to my tastes. My main hope is that the cinnamon danish swirl mellows out more, mainly because I bought a lot of it haha.
Both were pretty good so far, though! I can't wait to try them in another 4 days.

Something I might try with #8 is more graham cracker, less cherry, probably additional tobacco(s) and more AP.. maybe add a dash of coconut and up the cotton candy/EM.. MAYBE slightly less almond oil? But anyway, this is all speculation right now, I need to try again after some steeping :)

Thanks for the work SloHand!

Before you go adding or changing stuff, give it a little more steep time - with most of these recipes, the flavors will change almost daily until they settle down....after the first week or so, they tend to stabilize & get richer & mellower after that.

Just keep notes, but I wouldn't recommend changing anything until it's had AT LEAST a week of steep time...otherwise, you will be chasing your tail and never really tasting the actual recipe. If you go back to the main post where all these recipes were blind tested, you will see that they were only tested after one to three weeks after blending. Makes a lot of difference.

BTW ..the cinnamon and almond notes should settle down in a few days...some flavors just take longer to dissipate into the juice.

Have fun :)

Awesome thanks for the tip! I will definitely let these all steep for a while longer, and maybe just experiment with new flavors in the mean time.. I'd like to try a combination of tobaccos, graham cracker, black and mile, coconut, almond oil and AP.. Not much different than other recipes in the thread but I definitely love the sound of all these together. Can't wait to try the others I made when the flavors mellow out! They were definitely pretty in your face, especially the cinnamon.. I think it'll turn out good though!
Thanks!
