My first Mod - Did I do it right?

Go to Welcome to MadVapes LLC and check out the piece parts they sell for mod building. You can buy a variable voltage mod already assembled for $35. You'll need 2 14500 IMR batteries and a charger. That will add about $20-$30 to the total cost. They also sell regulator chips, miniature digital voltmeter modules, and atty connectors, as well as all the other parts you will need to assemble a good mod that looks store bought.

good start but it`s not enough.Why you don`t make or buy a variabile voltage and with two 14500 for this mod box ? With two battery you have a lot a space for electronics, switch and 510 connector

Because at the moment I'm broke! I've been on unemployment and my wife just lost her job. I have 3 kids and no money coming in. Vaping is very important to me at the moment and money is an issue. Does that clear things up for you?

Variable voltage seems to be the ultimate mod although I have a charger already for my NiMH rechargeable batteries. I don't mind the extra bulk at the moment. Maybe in the future... I do have a 510 adapter coming from MadVapes.

Exactly. I have $1.99 invested out of pocket in this. All I paid for is the case. I just wanted to try and see if I like higher voltage vaping. Guess what? I used this almost exclusively yesterday and the night before. I'm planning on using it today and will probably modify it some more.

I left the switch on once already yesterday. Whoops! I was in the car trying to figure out how to get somewhere and using my GPS on my phone. I think I heard it first. Then smelt it. It was fairly hot when I turned it off. I heard a pop just before I did so. After a few cool-down minutes I tryed it and to my amazement the atty hadn't fried! I'm thinking it's time for a momentary switch...

For your momentary switch, atty mounting, led, a second battery box epoxied on works great.
Even a 2 AAA box is big enough, way to figure what you like is to take a couple boxes in Radio Shack
and hold them together in your hand, whatever's comfortable for you....

The 4 AA NiMH batteries work well for a variety of attys, but may be a bit much for LR, you'll
have to use a light touch on the button for them, pulse the button a bit.

For leds, check the dollar store for a cheap multi-led flashlight, a buck and you have leds for
3-5 mods, just unsolder them. A single 5mm led salvaged from a flashlight in my mod has enough
light to double as a "find the keyhole" flashlight (with the atty loosened..)

Excellent suggestions! I in fact bought a momentary switch and 2AA size box today. I'm kinda apprehensive about putting in an LED. I'm thinking it might be too technical for me.

I wouldn't bother with an led. it is a waste of battery resource and takes away vape time on smaller battery mods like AA and AAA sizes. I know they don't use much power, but over time you could lose almost an hour of vape time on your smaller batteries.

Check out my thread. I built a 3.7 volt 1800 mah box mod with parts from an old ecig and radio shack parts, and it is sweet. I even went a step further and installed a charge port using a female RCA connector, and making an RCA mail to 510 connection coupler so I can hook it to my old ego USB smart charger! Now I can Vape and charge at the same time, total cost was a little over ten bucks and like an hour of me time. Check my thread below:

Sorry to hear that, I apologize for my remark..however for few money you can try a 2 x AA box,1 14500 battery,1 switch and one 510 connector.It`s a acceptable mod box with good vapours

Very functional Mod! I might tackle the passthrough after I get the first mod under my belt.

In all fairness you had no idea about my situation. Can those batteries be charged on a NIHM charger like I already have?

So, here is an update. I routed, glued and attached everything except for the 510 Atty. I'm waiting for that to come in the mail.

I chose to use nuts and bolts to attach the two bodies.

I installed a juice well in case I miss so it doesn't end up on my lap - been there...

The button went in nicely. Flush!

It's come a long way from it's humble beginnings!

Thanks Stosh. It got a little messy with the epoxy. What's the best way to clean that up, anybody know?

Ummm, hammer and chisel?
serious a little sandpaper or an xacto knife, it's supposed to harden to indestructible and can be tough to clean up once hardened...

Epoxy can be tough to clean up. If it's the soft kind, like Hardman Expoxy, you can cut it with a knife (it's usually clear). The yellow stuff is like hard plastic. The box mod I have uses clear RTV sealant to pot the components.

AA NiMH batteries have good mah ratings ... about 2000mah. You should be able to vape for a while. Finding the right atty to match the output voltage will be key for the best vape wattage, since it isn't able to change voltages. Good luck with your mod!

Thanks DaveP and everybody else who have helped me in this project. I have a question. My 510 connector arrived today so I hooked everything up to the switch. Apparently I bought a NO switch (Normally Open). I left the manual switch in place on the box hoping to use it as a cut-off. So now when the manual switch is on, the momentary switch is open! Can I reverse the wires or do something short of buying a NC (Normally Closed) switch? Or am I just doing something altogether wrong? Help!

Edit: Hmm...what I mean by the momentary switch being "open" is it's on. Technically that would mean the switch is closed, right? BTW can you tell I've only had one year of Electronics class way back in H.S.?

Anyway, I have to keep the momentary button pressed to stop the current from keeping the device on. That is the issue.

Solder on the switch looks good. I don't see how it could be bridged. Is the "NO" the right switch? Normally Open means no current flowing through, right?

It's so simple I don't see where anything could have gone wrong...
