Placed the kissbox case in my pocket and felt weird that it was feeling hot. So i took it out and got a shock. One of the batteries felt extremely hot and my thumb got burnt.

Immediately I flicked the battery out of the case and within a minute it was on fire!!

Is this due to a battery leak? I have not charged both batteries for 2 days.

Hope this is an isolated issue. Imagine if i did not take it out and kept the case in my pocket!

well, this is the risk with any Lithium battery. It happens even with brand name products (dell, sony) so what can you expect from a cheap batt?
You can't guarantee it won't happen with another one. Try to make sure you never short them and use them only with a charger fit for them (they need a very exact voltage and current, you can't just use any charger from another model, even if they have similar ratings). Even with these precautions it might just catch fire so you may want to deposit them in places where they can't do much damage , ie near the toolboxes and not near books, and definitely not in your pants' front pocket :)

Yep, this exact same thing happened to me (except the battery didn't actually catch fire - just red-hot). Definitely not pleasant.
I agree with Bob...we need to give the anti-movement as little "ammunition" as possible with which they can use to ban/over-regulate, etc. - And this kind of thing doesn't help!

nickle metal hydride battery technology could be used its safer but much bigger..

however a decent sized e smoking device could be made around three AAA sized cheap metal hydride off the shelf batteries.. these would give 760 ma at 3.6 volts and work way better than the micky mouse cr-ap we now have.. and not catch fire..

the downside for some.. it would not be cigarette sized or even vaguely resemble one..

Trog,

Didn't you post a pic ages ago of something like that you'd cobbled together ?

i did.. it was based on a four AA battery holder and some metal hydrides i had laying around.. it worked nicely with a battery run time of two days heavy usage.. i had to saw a cigarillo in half to make it.. it used three AA batteries and a blank..

if one wants to make one to use for real.. find a flat four AAA battery holder.. chose your atomizer .. a classic is probably as good as any.. rip the end piece from a dead classic battery.. fit this in the fourth battery space at the end.. u only need room for three batteries.. screw your atomizer of choice into the brass end piece occupying the fourth battery space having wired it up.. it would need a small push to make switch sourcing from somewhere putting in circuit..

it should give nearly a days usage on one charge.. and cost bugger all..

i meant a flat side by side battery holder dude.. not a f-cking end to end one.. brain into gear please.. he he

it would resemble a small flat case no larger than a small cigarette case.. there would be a mouth piece to suck on sticking out the end at the top.. all very neat..

so I should move the charger away fro mthe jumbo box of matches and cans of lighter fluid on my counter then? :)

well I knew this was going to happen sooner or later . When I mentioned this in my post regarding title .atomiser cocking bright red. And a reply post from me entitled we can't afford to have burning problems like these .

A few people in this forum seemed to think it was quite funny as this happened to some of them to. Thinking it was so funny jumping around with their pants nearly on fire. It might sound funny but we certainly don't need things like this happening. Also At that time people seem to be more concerned about what had caused this rather than the law implications.

I totally agree we all need to know why these things happen and it is good information when people reply back with the right answers. But we all need to consider the other implications if we want to carry on being able to use electronic cigarettes.

So I personally think suppliers -- manufacturers etc should be aware of incidents like these. So they can all work on trying to solve problems like these which should not be happening. It won't be just us smokers up the creek it will be the suppliers and manufacturers as well. And none of us then will be thinking it's funny.

Ned, apparently you just won't let this go... Again, the fact that my atomizer got extremely hot WAS NOT FUNNY - however, I do have a sense of humor and was able to look back and see how this would have looked to OTHER people around me.

It's not that I won't let this go or trying to act like a dog eating a bone and want let it go and it wasn't directly aimed at you personally and I apologise if I have caused you any upset regarding my quotes. It was aimed at the general attitude of people with what I had to say.
And I totally agree with your reply back to me regarding this. It must have looked funny to other people.
But people seemed to still brush this under the carpet and don't seem to want to discuss ways ideas etc to come up with ideas to contribute to the future of electronic cigarettes and improve of the safety for everybody and if there is a flaw in these products this has to be addressed out now not in 10 years time when they ban this is a well. Because people were so ignorant to the fact. I am not political or into politics or any sort plus I'm not into religion or their arguments .
Because far as I'm concerned those two subjects are what cause wars in our world and the reason I have mentioned this is because I don't want you thinking I won't let this go because I'm some sort of religious political freak.
And after being in show business for the last 30 years I. to have a sense of humour as well.
So let's all try and come up with some good ideas to combat the problems we get and then put them to the suppliers and distributors which they then can put forward to the manufacturers. And let's stop ignoring the issues here.

we have two things at work here.. one is a simple pressure switch failure.. this causing the battery to continuously heat the coil and the coil to glow hot.. this while alarming isnt overly dangerous.. there isnt enough energy in the battery to set anything on fire it simply goes flat quick.. one advantage of the little battery..

the other thing is the battery being lithium technology can in certain circumstances catch fire.. this isnt the same as the switch failing and can be dangerous.. two different things.. please lets not get them muddled up..

lithium batteries are used in their millions.. laptops.. phones.. plus other things.. not many have ever caught fire.. plus there is nothing we can do about it.. or the manufacturers..

if these things worry u buy a metal cig case and keep your e cigs in it.. charge your batteries away from flammable things.. say on an open bench.. they dont explode simply burst into flames.. put it all in metal box if u have to..

but above all it aint likely to happen.. so take some simple precautions and dont worry about it too much.. consumer lithium batteries have built in electronics to stops bad thing happening while they are being charged..

lets not make mountains out of molehills..
