Nicowolf,

Fascinating stuff here. My interest is high because of the premature death of a week-old 801 battery and it's looking like creativity may soon be necessary to carry on.

Are the part numbers and methods posted in your HOW TO thread adaptable to an 801?

The methods are 100% adaptable. The part numbers would change though. The penstyle atomizer will fit in a 2xAA box, but not the 2xAAA one. The DC Jack will fit a 901 or a 4075, but not the 801. There are some out there using a 1/4" mono audio jack for the 801. I don't know all the details, but someone will be along soon with that info I'm sure ( they are good around here). The battery size would be a 14500 for that one. In short, it can be done, but with different part numbers.

Thanks Nico. I was just about to edit my post after more carefully reading through the thread and seeing something about an "audio jack" as an atomizer connector for penstyle. It would be lovely if someone can fill in more of the blanks for doing a 801 mod. I'm not finding much in this forum about that.

I suppose the AA style is a better deal with the higher mAh available with the 14500. I'll have to study up on all this PCB stuff. It's foreign to me since all I have are NiCd and NiMH chargers and rechargeables.

The pcb stuff just means that the battery is protected from:

overcharge
Over discharge
Reverse polarity

Anyone could damage the battery and with Li-ion or any lithum batterys could have explosive results. Unprotected are still alright but just use a good charger and a watchfull eye.

PS A good charger and watchfull eye goes for any battery protected or not :D

Please forgive me for heading off in a penstyle direction in this 901 thread but I'm hoping y'all can give me verification and direction.

From a forum link: A two cell battery box that seems ideal. Inexpensive with a built in master switch.
Battery holder: 2 x AA Covered Battery Holder with On-Off Switch - BB2AA

From another forum link, the atomizer connector.
1/4" mono Panel-Mount Audio Jack (2-Pack) - RadioShack.com

Batteries that look good for this application:
Li-ion 14500 Cylindrical Rechargeable Cell: 3.7V 750mAh (AA size, 2.77Wh)- UL Listed - LC-14500

Now, here's where I get lost. The charger.
Will this work?
Smart Charger (1.8A) for 3.7V Li-ion/Polymer Rechargeable Battery Pack--UL listed - CH-UNLI3.7V1.8A

Or this?
Smart Charger (0.5A) for 3.7V Li-ion/Polymer Rechargeable Battery Pack--CE/UL listed - CH-UNLI3705

Or is there a Li-Ion charger that looks like a plain ol' NiMH charger where you simply drop the cells into slots and let them charge two or four at the time?

Thanks!

nico, I built a stick two weekends ago and am happy to say it is great! I just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to share what you did in such a clear and concise way. The extra effort was really appreciated!!! I have really enjoyed the performance of the device!!

Thank you Frankly. I built another one for my 510. I am head over heels in love:wub: with the NicoYetiStick.

Again you are my hero! er.. heroine!! :D Did you sacrifice a battery or did you find something nifty? I'd imagine you didn't recess the atomizer on the 510 or did you? Inquiring minds want to know...

I euthanized one of those poor hapless, hopeless, crippled batteries. The transplant was no simple issue.

I did recess the atomizer - only left about 1/4" outside the box.

The Yeti atomizer is now very happy in his new bionic box, just vapin' like a locomotive.

Any instructions or pics of dissecting the 510 battery. I am waiting for one to die to make a mod. I was thinking the atty may last longer than a 901

I was thinking of starting another thread asking this very question. So far, I have been removing as much as I can from the led end, then using a mini pipe cutter to cut the connector out (I have not been able to wiggle or pry it out like I could with the 901). I would LOVE to hear from others if there is a tip out there that may help.

Yeah, I was in touch with Tinear about the same thing. He heated the connector end of the battery with a lighter (careful now) and used an atomizer to wiggle the connector out......I haven't tried it yet, but I will, maybe with a slightly crappy atomizer. Maybe squeeze the battery a bit first with pliers to break up whatever glue is there might help too. I would wrap a towel or something around the atomizer where the it's connector is, then put a locking wrench around that, so you're not just yanking on the other end. if you just pull from the other end it'll probably tear the atomizer connector out.

Why is it that I get no pictures on the first post by nicowolf, only small boxes with a red 'X'?

I am getting that now too. I must have done that silly thing again with deleting the attachments after copying and pasting them. I will repost them in a better way in the morning. Sorry:oops:.

I always thought they just got moved to the sticky post.

BTW I just finished my first mod ispired by Nico. 4AA box so I could practice and use Nmhi while waiting for my batt shipment. I used a great little switch from Ratshack:
3A 125V SPST Pushbutton Momentary Switch - RadioShack.com

This swich is great. So soft and sleek. Took some extra modding to get the nut that holds the button from the inside. I had to remove one of the plastic battery walls. Nothing my dremel didn't handle with ease:D I also had to bend the contact pins down so the lid would fit on.

Its going to be fun tring to get it in the 2AA box with the slide switch also, but I will try and report the results along with the life of the switch.

I am in the process of making one with that very switch. If you look closely at that nut, it has a basic hex shape except for that very back portion that has the barbs to make it a locking nut. I just used a boxcutter to cut along the hex sides so that it has that hex shape all the way, including that back part. It was a perfect fit to sit in one slot of the 2xAA box, but couldn't turn once in there. I simply held the nut in place while I screwed the switch in (unsoldered of course). Hope this helps.
