There are always wackjobs and numbwits. Whenever someone gets their panties in a twist over x issue where x isn't really an issue, I think of this ...

Or alternately, I start discussing the health issues of dihydrogenmonoxide. If you can really get someone going on that one and then explain what it is, well, I'm easily amused. Guess there was one town that actually started to try to ban dihydrogenmonoxide! Yeah, good luck there.
And then I kick back and relax. Things have been worse, things will get better, or not. Vaping is a big deal to us, but most people don't care one way or another. My own guess is that vaping is going to end up like pipe and cigar industry, at least on the regulatory side. Which wouldn't be such a bad position to be in. Standards for cleanliness and purity of contents, not a bad thing. Even having minimal standards on mods, as in if it's CE or UL rated, you know it meets a certain standard, again not a nightmare. (And you could still buy mechs, but there would be a clear difference.)
Insofar as doing it in public, guess I come from a harsher world where violations get you killed, not just frowned at. I can be frowned at. I don't care. Frown away. As vaping swamps analogs (and even ecigs) clouds will overcome smoke in people's minds when they see a puffy white thing in the air. THAT is when vaping is going to become generally acceptable.
But it takes time. The biggest advantage is how easy it is to build and make this stuff. It's really hard to ban a substance that's commonly available at every C store. Even the equipment is really hard to ban, because the most basic form, a coil with a wick on top of a high performance battery is just not that hard to make.
Which was my point on another thread. When you have simple tools available everywhere in plain sight (and if you don't know what they are, you won't recognize them) and substances just wandering around in the wild for anyone of age to buy, it gets impossible to ban. It's not like hemp or poppies. This stuff is everywhere. Sure you can require people to wear helmets while walking or ban dihydrogenmonoxide, but it's not going to actually happen no matter what legislators or regulators would like to think. They're not omnipotent.
Now I'm not saying don't stand up and defend vaping, far from it. But hysterical panic does not help. Besides which, staying totally calm, civilized and polite makes the whackjobs furious. That's too much fun. The more they froth and foam at the mouth, the better. Then they look like idjits trying to ban water.
