I don't think we are making too much of NET's. If you're a tobacco lover (I'm talking about the leaf here -- cigars, pipes, etc., not necessarily the juice) there's just no substitute. I haven't come across anything that wasn't extracted that even comes close to Devil Dog, London, Patriot, Managua, Alcazar, Acid Blondie, Wild Turkey, etc. in terms of replicating the enjoyment of genuine tobacco. I just don't think it can be done. I have had non-extracts that capture maybe one aspect of the real thing, but I never find it completely convincing. In all of the aforementioned juices, the tobacco takes center stage, but an artist like Wlad from Ahlusion or Nick from GoodeJuice also knows that it doesn't always have to. But with any blend, if one part suffers, so does the whole. How many juices have you had that were good, except for one little thing that you didn't like, be it "mystery nut," a strange hint of plastic, or what have you? That undesirable quality, no matter how subtle, is often the deal-breaker. It's this fine-grained attention to detail that sets great juice vendors apart.
The modern industrial world has had a strange effect on our senses. We have developed a split perception of many naturally occurring flavors. Think of a fresh strawberry (or banana, watermelon, raspberry, cherry, etc.), and then think of a piece of strawberry-flavored candy. Two completely different flavors, yet we think of them both as "strawberry." In this world, a McDonald's hamburger that has been blanched and reconstituted with artificial dyes and flavorings is "the way a hamburger is supposed to taste." I find the same to be true with tobacco e-liquids. There are two completely distinct classes of juice that we call "tobacco." The artificial tobacco standard was set in the early days of vaping when Chinese manufacturers were trying to find a reasonable substitute that would help people quit smoking. Artificial tobacco usually has more of a leathery or sandalwood flavor to me than an actual real-life tobacco flavor. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's the difference between a fresh strawberry and strawberry candy. Both have their place in the world, but we should realize that they are not the same.
