NYT front page today - with new taxes to come into effect, a pack of cigarettes in NYC will cost $11. Elsewhere in the state, $9.40. NY is pulling revenue from anywhere that they can; it's gone completely broke, actually. When I first moved here I didn't mind paying pretty hefty taxes, because I'd been living in low-tax MO, and discovered that the schools, health care, roads, and other tax-reliant programs there were worse than abysmal. Teacher's salaries were so low that they couldn't attract decent ones, absolutely terrible schools, the roads and public works were a mess, and even poor kids couldn't get decent help with medical care. As a health care worker with 3 kids in the public schools I fled. (Originally from Maryland.) Cuomo was Gov. here back then, and tax dollars came back to the people in the form of a fairly decently run state - the difference in schools alone was amazing. That was what, @18 years ago? It's become an ill-run, corrupt and vicious mess since then. They're not just taxing cigs, they're slashing all sorts of really important human services. This is runoff from the Bush years; that's when the mess and the chaos started setting in, and the states started getting starved for Fed revenue - and I'm not counting on things getting better anytime soon. The economy of the entire country pretty much went to hell and it's no easier to fix than the damned tragic oil spill.

Maybe things are simpler in Patagonia. I'm ready to pack. Mud, wind, glaciers; OK. WhatEVer.

And meanwhile, I've heard no further word about the idiotic ecig ban bill going anywhere. Would be one of a thousand upcoming cruelties, and totally gratuitous. But at this point anything can happen.

Since this is the central thread for tracking NYS news on that issue in this forum (it got spread around all over the place for a while), I'd really appreciate it if those closest to the issue - the folks who went to Albany, etc. - would post here more frequently, even if to just say, "no news", or reiterate current situation and implications.

Just so all of you know as of yesterday...the news is

the bill is DEAD!

It could and most likely be brought back in the fall, but for now...no worries

Peace......

This is great news indeed. Perhaps this will allow some time for those poor smokers to discover ecigs. At this rate, if they smoke a pack a day at a cost of $77 a week, they could instead get a starter kit with some juice and become vapers. In eleven weeks they will have spent about $847 by the end of August. It will cost over $4000 a year to smoke a pack of cigarettes in NY City and about $3458 for those living in other parts of the state. I'm so glad I discovered ecigs and I have prepared myself for that posible ban. I have no doubt the ecig ban will follow, once they realize they won't be able to get the projected moneys from people who just can't afford it anymore. The next tax increase will be from soda, water, etc. and fiinally, the air that we breathe.

woo woo!!!!! Thank you so much all who sent letters and made phone calls and signed petitions and kept us informed and met with Albany people, and to those who gave us so much help in making our own contributions to the cause!!! Wonderful, wonderful, and if we have to go it again in the fall, we know what to do. Happy Becca (me) at this moment!!!!!!!!!!

WOW! That is excellent news. I guess my calls and emails might have actually helped!

Sure glad I don't have to pay for cigs anymore. I feel bad for smokers on a budget. Even a small pack of lousy Top or Bugler tobacco is over $5. Our economy is in BIG trouble, but at least we can vape still!

vape still..for now, yes
they may return later, and also the FDA has already appealed

I guess help as many of your friends and family who smoke on a budget or otherwise, and spread the ecigs.

Is there a reference? How do you know it's dead?

I would like this answered as well.

The Bill was not brought up, the Senate is on recess. So the bill is dead, it can not be brought back in the same form, it must be rewritten in the fall and pass the senate again to reach the senate health committee...:toast:

Let's just hope that they have been given and are using accurate information in their decision making process. We know that the FDA has presented twisted data in their report and the little "antifreeze" comment made it around the world as a quote in news articles. If the FDA said it, it must be accurate ... Right?

Now that's pretty funny right there!

Me thinks someone did not watch the video in the first post of this thread.
I don't suggest watching it though, unless you like horror movies.

That's still a good thing, since maybe your message will have some effect when/if the bill comes into question again in the future. Good job! :toast:

I dont know what the problem with our senators is....(oh wait yes I do...they want the money they really dont care about anything else) BUT let's look at the proven things that tobacco smoke does to your health as well as those who breathe second hand smoke....and then lets look at the vapor thats emitted from the ecig...hmmm smoke from tobacco with something like 4000 toxic chemicals in addition to carbon monoxide vs water vapor...hmm lets see no brainer maybe

I've been trying to get my friend "Mary" to go with E cigs.......Instead, she is attending a "stop smoking class" (support group). I asked her what they have said about e cigs. They said their still doing a lot of research on them (they don't know yet) but there is promise. What they did tell her was that you get much more nicotine from an e cig than you would from a regular cig....So basically they are not recommending e cigs at this time in the support group.
