I am waiting for my first RTA. I ordered premake cois , the atomizer. Aside from prebuilt wire coils that you connect with the 2 screws, I'd like to make 1.5 ohm coil. How do I know how the install what wire and how many times to wind it. Also, how much cotton batting do I use?
One other thing I don't understand. If the ohm is 0.5, why do I need more watts ? I thought that lower ohms would require less watts. Why is that?

Is 1 ohm a sub tank? What does a 0.5 ohm wiring do that a non sub tank do that a no sub takn .

Check steam-engine.org for a coil calculator. You input wire gauge, material etc to see how many wraps you need. If you're using a regulated mod you don't need to care that much about resistance. Lower resistance coils are usually made with thicker wire, which require more power to heat up. It's about coil mass however, not resistance. You could make a higher resistance coil out of thicker wire, by using a lot of wire, and that would require much more watts due to the increased mass.

I appreciate straightening this thing out for me. I do have a mod that regulates. But it is really nice to know how these things are figured out.

Is there any wire material that's better than another?
If you're going to use temperature control you need the proper wire for it. Titanium, stainless steel, or nickel/ni200 (the last one I wouldn't recommend). In watt mode kanthal or stainless steel (don't use titanium or ni200 in Watt mode!). As stainless steel can be used in both modes I'd go for that, but it has lower resistance than kanthal for the same wire gauge (which doesn't make a difference on a regulated mod).

The history is that, for a good while, high power vaping was done with mech mods: a battery and a switch. Ohm's law says that if you know the voltage and the resistance, you can then predict the current and the power. In that case, resistance was a measure of power except in reverse -- low number high -- and without having to take into account that actual power varies with battery voltage in those rigs.

Ohm's law predicts how much power will flow, not what will happen when it gets there. Thicker wire reduces resistance and also makes a bigger coil, suitable for the higher power. However, more wraps of the same wire increases resistance while increasing the size of the coil, so this becomes limited to, and required for, adjusting the vape with a mech.

With production devices and some builders, there may be some desire to keep some compatability with mechs. Otherwise, we're still hung up on "ohmage" as a measure of power level way too much, as good things are possible when you go to a regulated mod and lose those restrictions.

If I had not been here years ago when I followed directions on how to make a box mod out of a battery box, I would probably not understand any of this.

But I do understand it all. And it's a good thing that I have a regulated mod. The coils I believe are Ni. But it seems that being 1.5-2 ohm , it's slim pickins on choice of premades.

Thankyou for the directives. I appreciate it.

Yes I must agree with you there. And most of the choices are for Sub Ohm Vaping. Thank Goodness Coils are not difficult to make or install, and if desired you can purchase exotic wire and still build with Clapton or Tiger Wire if so desired with the Pieces of premade wire.
Enjoy and I'm sure you will
