@MetalSteve, I think that you've also got an issue with your wicking. Sounds like you have too much in the tails and possibly a little too tight through the coil.

As your liquid should wick freely and you shouldn't have to take primer puffs. But RTA's can suffer airlocking, where air pressure doesn't equalize then a vacuum forms in the tank and liquid is unable to be wicked.

rda's don't suffer from that issue at all.

And the metallic taste, I too get that with Kanthal. Changed over to Stainless Steel and things are much better, last time I tried Kanthal I thought I was going to be sick (yes folks, it did taste that bad to me). Just remember not everyone is the same, but some of us can taste the difference between the metal that's used in the coils and some is damned foul.

Thank you! I've been thinning the tails and cutting them a bit shorter. I think I'm getting the hang of wicking my RTA.

I think this was the problem. I'm using the kanthal wire and I think I'm ok with it. I still haven't tried the Ni80.

I think the metallic taste is more of a personal thing. I get a nasty metallic taste off of all types of SS wire. I use nichrome and don't get that taste happening.

Yeah I think you're right, metallic taste is a personal thing. As you know, I've been vaping on single coil SS temp control and I don't get a metallic taste.

First time today to try something different. I never was interested in these mega build coils, as I found them to be a bit expensive to buy. But after trying out the Triple Fused Clapton coils(Ni80) that came with my Pulse X RDA, I'm really impressed. As usual Temp control here. Once I run out of my single coils, I might look into building my own coils especially Ni80. I hope I will be successful at it??

Glad to hear you're enjoying it.

I've grown very accustomed to my NI80 fused claptons. I wrap triple core 28s or quad core 30s.

Right now I'm running a set in my B2K wraped in parallel (double 28x3/40). Surprisingly pleasant build.

Just got my first wire (26 gauge Kanthal) and making single coil for RTA. Also doing twisted pair dual coils for RDA (RDTA) I was really tossed about whether to get Kanthal or Stainless Steel... hope I don't regret it! I chose Kanthal for higher resistance, and I tend to use lower wattage than most people. Going to get 26 gauge SS next time to compare. Oh yeah, and dual regular coils for my "evil" Bellus (if I can get it to stop leaking!)

@AngeNZ you start the best threads!

To all new builders overstuffing (I was one of them) you may want to consider RAYON. It shrinks instead of expanding. It was my first wicking attempt that did not leak like a sieve, and I am fond of it because I am lazy/have a fine motor tremor and rayon wick will last longer, can withstand high wattages better, etc. With rayon, things don't have to be PERFECT (although they most certainly can be.)

The most common complaint with rayon (other than men having to buy a Sally's Beauty product) is the break in taste. Saturate your wick once it's in and burn for several 3 second bursts (now I am an old pro I now do this as I am tucking in my tails with a screwdriver) and there will be no "rayon taste" which I admit can be a bit unpleasant.

ALSO get the Sally's beauty CELLUCOTTON which says 100% rayon on the box . There is an almost identically named cotton product which says 100% cotton. Don't get that one.

Also, for the gentlemen not wishing to get into Sally's you can like, buy it off Amazon. Have no fear. You will not have to brave the leg waxing machines and the curling irons.

BEST of LUCK new builders, I would normally not say "If I can do it anyone can" but in this case, I will say it. Because it was TRUE.I sucked at building for a LONG time and I still often do. Even with a completely familiar atomizer. I just SUCK. But I love my RTAs.

Any pics of that setup in the B2K, I always found it more work than it's worth trying to get 2 coils in there.

When you say normal cotton does that mean like a cotton ball? I have heard of people using cotton balls and even cotton buds. At least cotton is one thing that I don't have to worry about purchasing all at once because they're going to ban it LOL
I use this. 40 feet for $5 on Amazon

I'll snap a pic here shortly, I gotta dry burn them off anyway so I'm going to wait for that so it's not a pic of crusty coils.

And I just wrapped them as one coil just like you would with a parallel build with round wire, so not really dual coil since there is only one wick.

@stols001, you forgot Tidi Rayon balls.

I don't think I forgot them. I don't know what they ARE. "Rayon Balls" sounds a bit too manly for me, honestly, but okay I DID forget the special rayon tampons which like a kind member sent me some, and like, I found them a bit terrifying and I was like, "I'm not sure I would vape these or EVEN use them for their intended purpose." I mean, they're oddly... slippery.

They are in my "Beautiful Mind" vape room somewhere. This is because I'm a hoarder though, not because I fear RAYON shortage. I mean DOUGLAS has a Sally's and they DON'T EVEN HAVE A STARBUCKS.

That is correct!!!! I am living in the 50s and I like it. I might even buy some corduroy pants (I could, the Walmart carries them.)

Also, Douglas had its first kid bring a gun to school. Whee. Everyone's freaking out. It's everywhere.

But, no Starbucks and that is a beautiful THING.

I'm still playing with different metals, even though I've been rebuilding a year.

Started using ss316l 28ga - no metallic taste. Tried ni80 28ga - no metallic taste. Recently tried kanthal for the first time - 0.7mm*0.3mm flat wire - no metallic taste.

    Guess I'm not a metal taster ;)

But! Muji cotton pads - blech cotton taste unless I prime. Rayon - blech taste unless I prime

I think I've seen more people say they don't get a metallic taste from any wires than those who do from a certain type.

Now cotton, I can't do cotton. Ever since I tried rayon, cotton has been ruined for me. Some isn't too bad, but most of it just tastes horrible to me. I get nothing but clean, clear flavor from rayon.

Quick question about "parallel coils"... would it have half the resistance of a similar single wire?
Also, has anyone done "twisted pair" spaced coils? I'm using 26 ga Kanthal. Might try using a screw for the spaced wind.
Yes. The ohms are halved just like it would be if it were a dual coil build.

I use spaced coils almost exclusively. I find it easier to just wrap the coil, pull the winds apart from each other on the coil jig, then compress them back together. It produces perfect spaced coils every time.
