Now after 3ml of vaping I am getting crud buildup on the bottom coils. It seams the vaper coming out on the bottom of the pyrex tube rises over the coils and collects on the hot coils.

I've had precisely the same effect with the enameled aluminum tubes I've used. It 'seems' the little space between the base of the coil and the top of the atty body produces quite a bit of vapor. I wonder if some of that would be pushed back down the wick into the juice chamber if it weren't for a little space above the mod body.

Hey all.
I just posted this in the other thread until LucidAce was kind enough to point out this thread.

Anyway here are some pics of my very first attempt. I ordered 2 7" pcs of pyrex, from Wilmad back in the beginning of the other thread. I just cut a pc, it fit right over my Chobra exposed wick, wrapped a coil w 30ga that came out right at 1.7Ω. The thing was a steam machine until I tried to slide the wick up a hair with the glass hot. A pc broke off the top, so now I'm going to start over. BTW this is 3mm thin walled tubing. Also I am aware that I need to get FQ instead of pyrex.

Fast forward 1 hr from that last post. I just drilled the wick hole thru about 3/4 of the way down at the size of the glass tube so it will sit nicely in there.

After skimming this thread, I realize this may be redundant, but I want to play too.

Here's the pics from the first post in the top paragraph.

After seeing the build up that BJ had on his coils from vapor coming up between the bottom of the tube and the top plate of the atomizer, I can't help but wonder if seating the tube down inside there or down into the thank like Dan's original attempt might be the way to go.

Hi gdeal,
Hey, I'm just wondering,,,what if we perforated that glass tubing with tiny holes just under the coil,,,do ya think that would release more vapor instead of just out from the top? Should still retain the insulation qualities as well,,,a good micro bit should be available for the drilling,,,whaddya think,,you know what? I live like 10 minutes from scubabatdan,,,i think I will just get with him and let him do that experiment,, he has like 100 feet of that glass I think,,,I'll let ya know what happens,,,course dan will as well I'm sure,,

Holes could help release some of the vapor pressure, but it may defeat the purpose for keeping your coils juice free. :)

You could ask Dan, he would probably have a better feel for drilling holes and probably has the tools to do it. I can barely keep my coil winding straight.

So I managed to destroy the first 7" pc of tubing with this pos cutter. Dont buy this type. I have 1 more tube to try cutting with some other methods.

Ya want to lightly score the glass. I would try and soften up the inside elbow of the cutter a little bit. Maybe sumfin soft like cotton batting?

I would take that spring out also. Gives you more of a light touch.

Yep. I bought one too, useless on the thin wall pyrex. I have a breadboard that has some grooves in it just the right size to hold and measure the tube. A light score with a mini triangle file and then snap away from the score. Real easy this way.

The main advantage of this is to keep juice off the coils, holes would defeat this.

What should I use to score it.

very small file. If you don't have one see if you can find a finger nail file. I laid my tube flat on a wash rag that I had on a book. Went back and forth with small file and it snapped fairly evenly. I ran the tube under warm water for a min first.

Ok so I have the whole thing back together with the glass recessed 3/4 of the way down into the top plate. There is an amazing amount of vapor rocketing out the top of the wick when the top cap is off. I am not getting that vapor production out of my drip tip, no matter the airhole position.
So I covered the airhole with tape and drilled a 1/16 hole in the top of the cap directly above the wick. Put another pc of tape to poke a smaller hole. Vapor production is comparable to just normal airhole placement.
I poked a second hole in the original hole so now I'm running with 2 tiny holes and things are getting better. Flavor seems to be off a bit.
BTW the specs on the setup are almost exactly the same as the first. I have noticed that w a 1.7Ω coil, keeping the volts down under 4 keeps the temp down when I chain. I always chain.

Fast forward 2+mls of juice. BTW, the original airhole position is polar opposite from the wick position. So I have one .5mm airhole opposite the wick and one directly (same size) above the wick.

You know when you get that "I'm right on the verge, but not quite there" feeling? Well thats exactly whats going on here. I'm pretty confident the whole thing hinges on air hole position and quantity. This washer addition may also help the vortex effect in my situation.

More tomorrow.

Got some Pyrex in. Snapped the tube, rolled a wick. Hit the button a few times. Vaping away since!
Total set up time 3 minutes..
Vapor is just as good, if not a little better than ss alone. Awesome Dan !thanks.
Can't wait to get the fq from Tb.

Lexi60, I can't tell from the picture...how are you set up? Is the glass counter sunk into the deck or just sitting above?

Scubaqu- Bamboo has been going for three days now. It is my best tasting vape ever. The coils have not gunked. The inside of the tube is black but still giving clean flavor. I could pull some new thread up from the bottom but it is so good I don't want to mess with it yet. Sorry for the messy studio, my wife would kill me if she knew I put this on video:oops: Glass not counter sunk, gave up on that theory. clic on pic for video...
