I have 1.5gb's left of bandwidth for this month, & it's now officially dedicated to this show when it's archived.
I'm so glad it happened to you and not me!
Your center tube is dry as a bone right?
It was dry. The short DID is brand new, & it was its first time being used.
Yeah, at first I thought it might be the 32 awg but when you went to 28 and it still happened immediately I knew it wasn't gonna be easy. I have 5 functioning DIDs and have popped coils but never so instantaneously.
At first I thought it was the wick...

I think I popped more coils on the show last night than I have since I started using Gen attys.
The last two sub 1.0Ω coils I've wrapped (ribbon) both showed me the same "1" when initially tested on the same ohm meeter that AG used. Not 1.0 but just 1. I put the Did on my Poldiac and fired it anyways and it worked fine, but when I put the Did back on the ohm meter it read 0.85 and showed the correct resistance ever after. When I saw the "1" showing on AG's meter I figured the same thing would happen when he tried to fire it up. I have no idea why I got that weird 1 reading but it's only happened twice and both were sub 1.0Ω coils.
That is odd. I rarely use that box. I usually grab my multimeter.

On some meters a plain old "1" can mean open circuit (kind of like an E1/E2 error on Provari).

Strange that folks are having such a tough time with the ribbon on the smaller DIDs. I've been using it on both my Gemini and Mini since I got it. I have the 0.6 X 0.1, wrapping 2/3 on my bigger DIDs (3.5mm wicks) and 3/4 on my smaller ones (2.8mm wicks) with both coming in between 0.8 ohm-1.0 ohm. I wrap my coils on the wick before installing it and then just flatten the ends for the +/- posts...

When I mentioned having trouble pinching the ribbon under the negative screw of the mini, I didn't crimp it down. It was also during a show I was doing at almost midnight. I'm sure it can be done, but it was just easier to grab the 30awg a wrap it with that. Sometimes expedience beats all else. ;)

I find it a bit harder to get the ribbon attached to the posts also. I was thinking how easy it would be if each post was a vertical clip of some kind that you could just slip the ribbon into without having to change the axis.

The way I hook up my negative is put a hook on it first the I can pull it tight. The ribbon work to as I tighten it crushes it so I stat at the. Correct angle

I was probably there on my Temon. I wrapped on the wick, gave the ends a quarter twist (to flat), inserted the wick and made my connections. I think it maybe scared me a little to be under 1.0ohm (I was around .8). I probably will try it again. I have 20 meters of the stuff.

Update:

Well...I went through and cleaned out the center tube and used some 400 grit sandpaper to smooth any edges, and I also replaced the two center post insulators..EUREKA! Everything is working fine now. There was a small burr inside of the 510 connection that I think was the culprit. :)

Ahhh, the beauty of simplicity, only 6 all mechanical parts. Not much can go wrong and when it does it can be easily fixed.
