Somewhere in PA on my Ultra Limited
1st attempt at a "twisted wick". Using 34AWG - A1 to get 1.9ohm (3/4 wraps). I twisted it by making a loop out of ~2 ft of wire. Drilled a screw into my work bench for an anchor, and bent a nail (hook shaped) as a tip in a variable speed 18v cordless drill. Spin it till it's twisted.

photo 3.jpg

It's more "springy" than regular wire so I shaped it on the wick before installing the wick and tightened it once in

photo 1.jpg

Very little nudging to sort out a hotspot. Not as pretty as some of you artists seem to be able to get, but burns pretty even

photo 2.jpg

Lots of vapor, a little softer flavor than I'm used to with this juice (a 50/50 blend of BWB Malty Toffee and BWB Green Apple)

Awesome, Thx! I have a Shorty just screaming to be tinkered with. I think I'm going to try the 3/4 with 34KA1 (same as 0.16) like Griz discussed in that thread. Reading through it, there a set of pics of a DID all twisted up and blasting like a volcano. The discussion about juice pooling in the twists makes sense and I'd bet there are less hot spots because the surface area where the coil touches the wick is decreased by the ridges created by the twists.

Even if it doesn't work, it'll be fun making a jig and playing with power tools
Aha! 34KA1 is the same as the 0.16. That was part of the researching I still needed to get to.
Exciting thread isn't it! Glad you found it useful and informative. Can't wait to hear the results of your creation.

I have a 6 part tutorial in the works on making a perfect wick and coil. Only issue is my internet connection is very slow so I will be uploading one or two parts per day till all 6 or 7 parts of the tutorial are posted on YT. The last two parts are long though and I wish I had someone here to work the camera but I think everyone will learn something even when you cant see what I am doing at all times. i apologize for that in advance. Will post links once they are loaded up.
Looking forward to seeing them! That's a lot of work! Thanks for your efforts.

Oh, I just re-read your question and I understand now more of what you are asking...unfortunately I don't have a reference for that.

DID Question

What if any thing does the size of the center hole in the SS mesh wick make? humm!! let me rephrase that

Does the size of hole in the center of the wick mater? if so why?

Hopefully someone more experienced will come along and answer. From what I understand, it's supposed to act like a straw... too large of hole and it will flood too easy, too small and will crimp the flow. Which comes in handy for the various mesh sizes we use... just pinch the top or open the top up more with a needle to suit your particular wick.

Awesome!! Thanks for the pics too, it really helps to understand what's happening.
I wonder why the flavor muted some? I wonder if it will return to normal after a few hours? Keep us updated!

Wick Hole (Explanation) - 146

Thanks for that, but i am asking about the center hole of the wick it self.

Ya i figured it plays a part in some way, I guess I should ask what is the typ size or best size to make it if using #400? my wick is fat and just slides in to the wick hole.

Anyone want to chime in on what size they use, i been rolling mine around the allen wrench provided with the DID.
