Hey there MM, glad to see you got your DID, I'm still away on vacation like Jim, but will be back next week. Have to go for now, was doing a quick check in.

I am going to need to buy some el cheapo flavor that doesn't taste half bad cause I have only the best of the best (IMO) and I can't waste my juice like this. I am a flavor guy all the way and watching my mL's go down of my favorites with barely any taste is quite the nuisance. FYI, I don't blame The DID, this is only my third attempt, but I see sediment at the bottom of the tanks, presumably from the wick being moved up and down, and I feel as if the juice has been tainted. Why is it when I watch the videos, I don't see other peoples fingers looking as carbon covered as mine?

Man, I am sure you all went though this, but now, after I ask questions, I am almost afraid to post them out of fear of the ignorance of said questions.

Mr. Mann if you want some cheapo juice to run your tests with and what not, just run over to walmart or CVS and get some USP Glycerin, dilute it with about 20% distilled water, warm and shake, let it return to room temp. That'll get you to a standard e juice viscosity and only cost you about 4 bucks.

hey guys, so much to read in this thread this may have been mentioned here or elsewhere.

i have been using a quick easy method for building my wick that is working great.

first i use a half sized sheet of the 400 mesh(not sure the mm size i made a template from the original sheets Jim sent)
I roll a fat wick using the allen key. i cut the bottom tip at a 45 degree angle.
This is where my method differs... No oxidizing at all. no heating, no quenching, no burning!
i simply take this raw mesh wick and then use the cotton q-tip method to put a thin layer of cotton at the coil end of the wick. this helps the wicking incredibly. The cotton keeps the coil from shorting and does not burn.
bam. a 2 minute wick ready for coiling! (you will need a good coil for this to work properly, i run a 3 wrap coil @ 1.7ish OHM) usually once a day i will slide/pull my wick out leaving the coil intact then i can dry burn my coil and i will run the wick under some water and it cleans up nice and the cotton will clean to white. if its seems funky i can also quickly re wrap with cotton for a fresher vape. i have found this preferable to oxidizing the wick and fighting hotspots. also no discoloration of my juice and the taste is better for me than an oxidized/quenched/seasoned wick. hope this helps anyone :)

im thinking with my next wick i will try to roll cotton into the middle of thee wick when i build to see what happens. I saw some were using cheese cloth or silica threaded through the center...

any faults with this method i am unaware of?

Hey guys, I'm on vacation and away from my home pc. I'll try to get a more detailed thread possibly a video up early next week. But yes as mentioned you take a cotton ball and roll your wick against it. The wick will pick up the cotton threads. You want to get very few thin threads and build them up evenly. I am only wrapping the end with the coil but may try wrapping further down next time. Hope this helps for now

My dad is a chemist and he is going to help me set up the did in his lab so I can use a Bunsen burner and whatnot. I'll ask him about the merits/risks of oxidizing the wick by chemical means and report back to you. We won't be able to work on it until Sunday so it may be a few days before I have an answer.

See what he thinks about possibly shielding the coil. Be interested to know whether or not there is some inert insulator he uses in the lab for custom made heating elements.

This works well and cheese cloth is also another good one. :)

Not sure if there's a list started, but put absinthe down as one that is not real-time flavor changing friendly. On my 2nd tank since switching flavors (absinthe -> malty toffee/green apple -> RY4 Gold) and I can still taste some residual. Hate to tear down a good build, but seems like she needs a bath...

I had the same problem with clove, which I have never tried before, Yuk, two tanks later I can still taste the stuff, may have to clean and recoil, and burn off that wick. Darn, always liked the stuff in my hams!
