Hello, hope you guys are doing good and stepping up to achieve your goals for the year. I been through a lot with these forums without being a member just to gain as much knowledge as I can. These forums have surely been great for gaining knowledge about vaping. But yes, began with analogs a couple years back and just couldn't find something to keep me off of it; I am sure most of you guys are familiar with that experience before vaping kicked in. vaping was the only escape I have found towards quitting such a bad habit. So here I am finally joining the ECF and in need of some help.
I started with a nautilus mini with a iStick 30W and sure enjoyed it a lot but I felt as if the flavor was lacking by a few. I then did some research on ohms, sub-ohms, coil-rebuilds, organic cotton, artificial vs. natural flavors, VG vs. PG, etc, etc, etc... for hours and hours, sometimes all night long to be on the safe side. Cutting things short, I am now currently using the Evic VTC mini with a subtank mini. I love the set-up! I went through many OCC coils @ 1.2 ohms, enjoying the great flavor it offers. I recently began working on my RBA deck of the subtank mini and this is where confusion hit me.
I tried many methods of wicking, using the pre-wrapped coils that came in the box for the RBA deck. Lastly, I now use a similar method to pancake method, with less cotton possible almost just touching the bottom of the deck when folded down gently. It is working good but I am still very confused. I was in this change for the flavor and using less money for the coils by rebuilding it myself. I find vaping a .57 coil with the pancake-like method to best suit me at 16 watts with good flavor, at least better than my nautilus mini. I have read in many forums that many users with this tank are using the same RBA over 25 watts, some even higher than 35 watts, but never below 20 watts with a sub-ohm built. I am not comfortable vaping PG, and I only vape max VG with 6mg Nic. If I vape below 14 watts, the flavor is very limited to least. If I vape AT 20 watts OR over, the flavor remains good for less than an hour, then the quality of the flavor decreases noticeably but I am sure it is not burnt taste, it is just very unpleasant but vapable unless I hit a 30, which makes it unvapable. The cotton also gunks up pretty fast from the sides by a bit. I use velvet cloud's campfire, night shift, apple brown, and audiofog's juices (all max VG) could it be the sweetness in them causing this as I have heard. But the gunk does not bother me because it still vapes good at 16 watts with the build-up gunk.
What is it that I am doing wrong? I cut that similar length of organic cotton you see on the videos, take one of the harder layers off from one side. Roll it up gently, almost like guiding it through the roll. Then squeeze in from one end to put it through the coil. It does not go in tight, or very loose, but just almost perfectly. I cut it at about the pancake method cut, including the corners and wick it from there. Once again, the ends of the cotton barely touches to the bottom of the deck when folded gently. I do enjoy it at 16 Watts, I feel I am getting that desired flavor, but I don't want to miss out on the performance it is capable of.
I will also be getting myself my own Kanthal A1 wire and do the coils myself. What are your suggestion on the coil build; how many wraps, what gauge wire, diameter of the rolls @ 2mm? 2.5mm? 3mm? What ohm should I be aiming at? Is .57 just not right for me? Is enough spacing between the coils, or tightly closed together better? considering all these questions based on the fact I only do max VG.
If you are going to suggest me a different sub-ohm tank, you may, but please explain why I should switch to it and how can I get the best performance out of it with max VG.
I am sorry if I shouldn't even be asking all this here. If you can assist me to the forum page I should list these questions under. I really do appreciate you for reading this, and hopefully I come across someone who can truly help me out and has experience in this. Thank you very much in advance, and looking forward to becoming a happy vaper.
