New Member - Looking to convert a smoker

Hey
First post. Been reading a bit on the forums. My buddy, @SilverFlow, started vaping a bit back, and the smell grabbed me. I have had cravings to smoke, but never found my 'thing'. Tried Hookah (fun, but not really flavorful, and alot of wasted time... set up/take down). Tried Pipe tobacco smells good, doesn't taste as good as it smells. Tried analogs. Smells bad, tastes bad, bad for you, $$$. Cigars, not bad, might continue to puff on those for special occasions... but the after taste makes me want to eat dog .....

Then SilverFlow got an ecig and I was hooked. Smells good, tastes just as good as it smells. This lead me to buy myself an ego last night (with some bobas bounty on the side).

However this is not all about me. My mom smokes. A lot. Probably between 1-1.5 packs a day. Its bad. She smells bad. Its bad for her. She has tried quitting... and she is good at it... shes done it 4 times. But needless to say, it doesnt stick. I know ecigs aren't a 'quick smoking method' and i am not trying to sell her on that. I have given up on getting her to quit. I realize one of the hardest things to quit in smoking is the oral fixation. SO!!! I want to get her on ecigs. Here is the problem. She is e-illiterate. Computers might as well be spaceships. The internet... lets just not go there. SO. How do i get her to change? My dad said he would try to help as much as he can ordering stuff for her (as there arent really any stores here to buy). But whats the best way to teach her/ get her to change? I heard the KR8 is a good analog-ecig conversion. However i dont want to invest to much into ecigs (on her behalf) if she isnt going to do it. So i also bought this Disposable 510 set. Any ideas on if this will help her decide if she is going to want to do the ecig thing?

Thanks ahead of time.

Hi Wsguede

welcome to the forum! I think the disposable is a good way to start. Sometimes it takes a bit for a person to find what works for them. I'd suggest letting her try it, maybe offering tastes of your flavors so she can get a sense of the choices. if you and your dad are willing to help her order that will go a long way. I don't know your mom, but i do know that if i feel pressured i automatically get stubborn- so let her find her own pace to deciding when and whether she wants to start substituting vaping for ciggs.

Thanks for the quick replies. I will try to keep the forum updated on how its going, i am hoping to go over to my parents place next weekend to start on the tutorial. I have a lot to read up on until then. If anyone has some good NEWB threads, i would appreciate it. -- ones that particularly helped you start vaping or helped you help someone start vaping.

thanks again.

Wow! You're an awesome person, wsguede, looking out for your mom like this! Welcome to ECF! We all have our success stories and you'll find a lot of them here. I was a 1 to 1.5 PAD smoker myself. Moving to e-cigs has been the most painless and fun way I've ever quit smoking. I'm coming up on a month soon, and don't even want an analog.

My best wishes to you and your mom. I hope to read that she's made the transistion!

Nice first post. Welcome to ECF. It is my experience that it is very difficult to talk people into giving up analogs. I keep a few Joye510 and Joye eGO kits around that I can loan or give to friends or relatives to try. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. It depends upon the individual. The kit you got for your Mom should work, if she is at all interested in getting off analogs, but I wouldn't keep pressing the issue with her if it doesn't work, and if she doesn't want to keep discussing it. In which case, hopefully, your example would eventually bring her around.

I think it's extremely sweet that you're going to try to get your mom off analogs, or at the least onto Vaping and smoking analogs a little less. I think if you tell her that she should try vaping and just cut back on the analogs and maybe slowly transition off the analogs completely, it will be more appealing to her. That's what I did originally becuase unlike your mom I was horrible at quitting and it worked wonderfully! :) Good luck.

and when your getting some juice for her to try get a couple different ones. A lot of long-term smokers are reluctant about the bakery stuff and start with the tobaccos so make sure she has a choice.

And make sure you vape really good smelling juices around her. Just the smell of cinnamon roll was enough to tempt one of my friends into trying it. :D

I've heard two conflicting comments on the scent of juice. The vapour produced either has no scent others can smell when you exhale/blow it out, or it has a scent other people can smell. Which is it? I think if a smoker like this kind guy's mom could see someone getting the satisfaction from an e-cig that she gets from an analog, while at the same time producing a much more pleasant and enjoyable smell than an analog, especially if that smell smells tasty like some decadent treat, she may be enticed. Someone above said one of their friends smelled them vaping a tasty-smelling juice and was enticed to give it a try, herself. So if this stuff does have a noticeable odor on exhale/blowing it out, that may be a good, non-pressuring way to get someone to try it. Like how you make a kid eat a food they otherwise were being obstinate about. "Mmm. This broccoli sure is yummy!" "Reawy? I wanna twy it mommy! Gimme sum!"

I'm dealing with my sister (long distance no-less) and sometimes I think I'm speaking a foreign language she totally doesn't understand.
Start off by keeping it simple. At first your dad or you might have to load the carts or cartomizers. Then little by little teach her how to do it herself.
Also, she may not know how to use a computer but she can read and watch videos---someone will just have to do the leg work.

A disposable one to start off with is fine but if it looks like she is going to stick with it, get something with great battery life. And, if it were me, I'd start her off with the cartomizers and/or introduce her to dripping.

I started with a disposable kit, which lasted less than two days. I got just enough from it to decide these things had legitimate possibilities; bear in mind that I was motivated to do so.

Your circumstances--as I understand them--are much more difficult. Between yourself and your mom, you're the one that has all the motivation. She's ok with cigarettes and the status quo. You're trying to pry her away from something she's perfectly comfortable with, and you're going to have to give her some very good reasons.

Here's a thought, FWIW: if you go the disposable route in the interest of minimal expense in the event of failure, you're likely setting yourself and your mom up for exactly that; you haven't invested much, haven't much to lose--and hence neither does she, particularly if she doesn't really want to give up smoking to begin with.

If, however, you invest $50 or so into a 510 or DSE901 kit and a couple of well-chosen bottles of juice, she's less likely to dismiss the matter out of hand. Perhaps, just perhaps, she'll give it a fair trial.

Just a suggestion on juice: a really good tobacco flavor, such as FreedomSmokeUSA's Wyatt Earp mix, Ry4 or Ry5--and something more fruity, feminine and exotic, just to expose her to the possibilities beyond tobacco flavor.

Good luck.

My brother in law is sitting next to me and he says he can't smell what I'm vaping at all... It's TV Boston Cream Pie. He's taken a toke here and there other times, and is used to me vaping...so I say it depends heavily on the particular juice you are vaping and the sensitivity of smell of others around you. Some will smell something, others will notice nothing.
