I've found that the button's lock has to be lined up perfectly with the horns to slide.
This is actually what the problem has been for me. We'll call it a learning curve. I am getting better, and falling more deeply in love by the day. Now tell me this: is it worth getting the IMR 18490s if I've got a pair of 18500s? I dunno the difference.

Any changes to the dimensions of them???? Or do they stay the same.

The IMR 18490's supposedly have a higher and more consistent voltage. If memory serves, the IMR's go from about 4.1 down to about 3.6 volts, consistently averaging higher than 3.7; whereas the protected 18500 cells start at 3.9 but decline more quickly so that you only get 3.7 volt vaping with a fully charged cell. They might get down to 3.1 or 3.2 volts if I recall correctly. Somewhere in this massive thread there are probably more accurate details.

But what you should take from this is that the IMR batteries will more consistently give you the voltage you expect or better.

Of course that will change in the future if you intend to add The Kick (currently in testing) to your PV. NHaler claims that it will boost and regulate output voltage. At that time, keep in mind that a diminished cell at a lower voltage will drain more quickly than a fully-charged cell; so I predict that IMR batteries would still be worthwhile regardless of the difference in rated mAh.

I have some protected 18500's but I haven't tried them yet. They're rated with a higher mAh rating -- but honestly, I'm not sure whether that is an actual higher capacity or that AW is more honest with their 18490's ratings as opposed to TrustFire's more optimistic rating... or maybe a little bit of both?

I'm also for the first time trying out a different manufacturer's IMR 18500 cell rated at 1600mAh. I suspect it'll perform for a similar duration as AW's more conservatively rated 1100mAh 18490, as they're basically the same chemistry and size as far as I'm aware. But we'll see whether the rating is truthful or merely exaggerated, and I'll give my unbiased opinion in a day or two. UPDATE: I'm not impressed. See comment #1631.

One final thought: If you intend to play with batteries of different depth, it wouldn't be a bad idea to bookmark Dave's earlier comment for instructions on when to use what o-rings and washer spacers.

I wouldn't say either one gives more reliable voltage, both of their outputs are equally consistent, but the IMR is able to hold higher voltage under load (.1 to .2 volts higher) with higher amperage draws to a point (usually about 1/2 way through the life of the battery). The IMR also doesn't last as long. My general rule of thumb, if you are running LR atomizers, then the IMR is a good choice if you are running higher resistance atomizers but if want max battery life, go with the Protected as the Protecteds will run LR atomizers too. To sum up, i'd experiment and run both and see what you like....
