The cotton is on the outside of the ceramic coil and doesn't touch the wire, so it doesn't burn at all. The wire side (inside of the coil) definitely does get red. It works beautifully!! :)
Excellent and Thanks!

I will give that a try before the next coil change.

So based on this thread, I decided to order one this weekend with all the Labor Day sale stuff. The ceramic and rewickable notch coil are what got me interested. I've never used a ceramic coil as generally I've read about issues with either ccells or all the leaking with the Cerabis. At least with this tank if the ceramic doesn't work out, the notch coil is still a reasonable alternative. This could fit my criteria for "easy travel" as I don't want to travel with RTA's and all the assorted and sundry parts if I need to fix something while away. With this I can just pop an extra coil in my case and I'm good to go.

But just to be sure I understand this before I mess stuff up, the ceramic just has to be gently pulsed to burn the crud off and wiped down with a Q tip? That's it? I hope that's it because it sounds really simple. I did order a few more as just in case coils (if I end up liking the ceramic) and a couple of the rewickable notch coils. The RBA doesn't hold out a lot of appeal for me with that single coil not terribly well machined deck, and as I doubt this will be an adv tank for me, I can live with that if I can keep the factory coils going with simple rewicking or dry burning to clean the ceramic.

Yep, it's that easy! I clear mine out with Q-tip during use, too. It helps the coil last longer between dry burns.

One thing about using this tank for travel: You can get some condensation in the bottom of the tank that will need to be blown out every so often. I hold a napkin loosely around one of the air flow holes and block the drip tip off with a finger, then blow through the other air flow hole to clear it out. I keep mine closed down pretty tightly, though, because it's super airy if I have the air flow totally opened, and I think that causes more condensation. YMMV, but keep that in mind. It's better to know ahead of time than to find juice in your pocket! :D

No joke on juice in your pocket. A tank has to pass the dry test before being allowed out of the house, never mind left on top of a mod overnight. No way I'm waking up to a flooded mod box. Thanks for the tip of what to look out for. A little condensation I can deal with. Wet pants, not so much.

Ha! I know, right?? I am a freak about leaky tanks. The Ultimo does not qualify as a leaker for me. It's not a problem unless you never clear it, same as most other tanks (especially ceramics). I take mine with me everywhere and my purse does not smell like Apple Pie, so it's safe for travel. :D

So are notchheads & rba worth getting after the ones it comes with or should I invest those coins into buying something else?
So far not a fan, needs way too much power, clapton dies way too soon and the ceramic one is a horrible leaker.
Are there any ceramic heads that don't leak when hot?

Mine arrives tomorrow. I ordered 2 notch coils with it, so if the ceramic is a bust, I can use that. Not ordering any replacement ceramics until I try them out.
I have been using a ceramic and a clampton coil for my 2 ultimo tanks. Mine were also leaking for no apparent reason, so I went looking for info in a video on youtube. A couple of things they suggested to do seem to have worked so far.
1. When filling the tank have the airflow wide open.
2. Triple check when installing the coil for the first time, meaning tighten it up, then tighten it again, and then once more. If they are not as tight as they can be they will leak.

Like I said, so far these tips seemed to work. Will let this thread know if that becomes no longer true.
:)

Well after tightening my ceramic so tight I had to use pliers to get it off it still leaked.
Maybe those that don't get leaks only take a few puffs aka don't heat the ceramic up?

Have you checked if the ceramic piece is properly centered inside the coil before you screwed it in? It appears an of-center ceramic piece is the main cause for leaking-issues with these.

I haven't used my Ultimo in a while simply because I prefer my Kayfun V5 clones over pretty much anything I've used so far, but when I did use it the tank got almost too hot to touch during use with the ceramic coils so I'm pretty sure heat isn't what's causing the leakage.

Does yours only leak during use, not when you let it sit overnight?

ps: Does Joyetech call those notch-coils MG QCS Coils?

If not where are you guys getting yours from?
Yes it is. I found some here.
directvapor dot com/accessories/joyetech-mg-ultimo-replacement-coils.html
of course replace 'dot' with '.'

So my Ultimo did arrive today. Adult signature required from MVS, which was fine with me, and I didn't pay any extra, just standard first class mail. I also got 2 of the notch coils to play with, which was in stock there. Pulled the Clapton that came preinstalled, washed everything and put the ceramic coil in.

THese are simply initial impressions. It will take some time to see how it stands up. I saw the notes about the ceramic being centered in the coil. It was a bit off center and tried to gently move it, but just heard grinding of the ceramic so left it be. Primed it and let it sit a while before starting off low at 25W. No leaks at all so far.

At around 35W it started to do something. By 40W, started to get decent vapor. By 45W, good vapor, still on the cool side, and the flavor is pretty good using the same Ry4 blend I currently have as my ADV in my Merlin. Obviously I haven't gotten through much juice yet, and I'll see how it stands up after running one or two tanks through, but so far no fatal flaws. If the ceramics hold up well and can be dry burned for cleaning, and the tank remains leak free, this will be a neat little solution. I do want to use the ceramic for a while before switching to the notch coil, as I expect that to be a pretty standard performer that offers the ability to clean and rewick which is a plus.

Yes the ceramic's do take a bit of power to come alive, I run mine between 55-60W. I had high hopes for the ceramic, but they really don't last anywhere as long as a standard Rayon build. The dry burning didn't quite work for me, I am used to cleaning the Rose V2 ceramic cup with the torch and you need to bring that up to white hot.

Let us know how you like the the notch coil.

So, tank #2 took a dump on filling it. Was fine the first tank. So I took it all apart to wash up and was going to pop the notch coil in when I examined the ceramic again. Yes, it was off center, but when I first installed it I couldn't get it to move. Now, with the ceramic wet, I was able with ceramic tip tweezers (just what my hand found first, no special magical ceramic on ceramic or anything) and got it nicely centered. Filled the tank and.........it dumped again. That sucks.

So on to the notch coil. Took it apart just to see what's what, and found a thinnish layer of cotton around the notch. Easy enough to reinstall, so swapping the cotton looks simple. Does anyone know if these notch coils are SS? I'd like them better if they were. Not that they have to be, but I'm trying to find a redeeming feature to this tank. I also have to figure out how to dry burn the coil in that cartridge after removing the cotton, otherwise why bother to change it (I always dry burn my coils, Kanthal and SS as to me it's just as important as fresh cotton wick)? OK, maybe not so simple. Kept getting a no atomizer from it on two different mods.:-x

Notch coil #2. Primed and installed. Read at 0.23 ohm. Yay! Fill the tank. Again. Working my way up to break it in, at 45W decent vapor and flavor. Flavor better than the ceramic (when it wasn't leaking). I have some more ceramic inbound to see if this is across the board. I'm not even going near hat Clapton as for me it's a why bother?

I'll contrast this with another new mod, the Tornado Nano. Comes with a nice big Velocity RBA. Also comes with a dual coil "chip coil". While not designed to be rewicked, it's very easy to do so anyway. Haven't even played with the deck yet. The chip coil is just that good. Outstanding flavor and vapor on a 0.3 ohm dual coil at only 40W. So far this Ultimo doesn't come close. Not worth the single coil RBA they have for it given my other tanks, so unless I can figure out how to change the wick on the notch without getting a no atomizer, this is of very limited utility to me. Maybe another ceramic will work, but unless this was 1 in 5 occurrence (and even that's not great) this will move to the "seemed like a good idea" drawer. I'm not giving up as the notch coil at least does have potential. I just need to figure out why it's not making a proper connection after reinserting with the wick.

Bummer. I really wanted a ceramic that didn't leak.

Sorry to hear you're having problems with the ceramic coil too @Eskie. I don't get why some can't get it to stop leaking while others don't have any issues at all.

This is like the EHPro Bachelor all over again. I guess I'm gonna have to stop recommending this tank until someone figures it out :(

@OhTheAgony, it is a shame. I am liking the notch coil. Decent flavor at 45-50W now that it's broken in. I still have to see how this gets rewicked correctly, and I'll try the other ceramics to see if it's just a matter of QC with the early runs. I otherwise like the size and convenience, but it's got a lot of ground to make up to stay rotation.

That's the only coil I haven't tried yet. I was gonna order some but I don't want to spend money on them right now. I'm just gonna wait until 3fvape stocks them, I have some cash left there from a refund I got a while back.

I have had no problems whatsoever with the ceramic coil personally though, from the ones I've tried it is my fav for this tank. I have only tried one ceramic coil so far though so it's possible I just got lucky and got a good one, idk.
