Nic Base Storage: Freezer vs. Room Temp Experiment

Why do you think not? I’m just surprised that they wouldn’t seal a liquid that’s potentially harmful.... iirc every other brand I’ve purchased has had a seal of some kind

Well, it would have to be an inner seal, 'cause I distinctly remember there not being an outer one, which is why I added the white tape you see in my various sample pics. I also don't recall there being an inner seal but wasn't sure. Now I am.

Just for you, I peeled the white tape off one the already rather nasty, never before opened room-temperature sample and opened it momentarily -- the right-most one in this pic. There's no inner seal.

FWIW, I caught a whiff of that nic. Ewww..

I've only ordered nic from MFS and Nicotine River. Both were nice and clear after pouring in smaller glass bottles (240ml). In the tall liter bottle they were shipped in, looking from the top down into the bottle, I could detect a slight yellowish tint, but that's looking through at least 10" of liquid with light entering from the side of the milky plastic bottle. Not sure if that was a legitimate viewing method.

As I've posted before, My MFS nic 240ml "working bottle" has been in the fridge for well over a year, is half empty, and still clear. Mixing at 3mg strength most of the time it's going to last a while. The Vapocalypse calculator predicts 9 years from a liter vaping about 10ml of 3mg/ml juice a day.

I’m surprised at VTs response. They actually want me to return the nicotine. I don’t know if I agree with trusting a person to correctly send back potentially hazardous materials. Of course I will package it securely as possible but this is the fist time I’ve ever had to physically return bad nic in order to receive a refund. Not sure if I’ll be buying from them again

I just saw a good deal on 2 gallons of 12mg mixing base.
Really do not want this in the fridge, so either freezer or cool basement.
I calculate this much would last about 4 years.
Would it be safe to store 1 gallon in the basement and freeze the other in Boston rounds?

12 mg "mixing base"? I suppose one could add more nicotine to make it worth vaping.

My experience is that lower strengths hold up better at room temperature than 100 mg does. I often have a bottle of 13-15 mg read-to-vape unflavored on my desk for a month at a time and have not noticed any color or taste changes. But personally I would not plan to keep any strength of nic at room temperature (or even "cool basement" temps) for years.

This is 70/30 pre mixed at 12mg nic.

No, Absolutely not. There are two components in 100MG/ML nicotine, either nicotine and vegetable glycerin, or nicotine and propylene glycol. Although most freezer units keep temperatures around zero degrees Fharenheit some will fluctuate downward by three to five degrees, and upward by two to three degrees. While propylene glycol is not readily affected by this temperature range, both Nicotine and Vegetable Glycerin are. Damage occurs to100mg/ml nicotine products when oxides form during near-freeze/thaw cycles. So while the ice inside stays "ice," outside temperatures, thermostat performance and the number of times the freezer door is opened will affect 100MG/ML nicotine in this sensitive temperature range. Typical refrigeration temperatures, or even room temperatures are a much safer storage range than 27-33F because they are well away from freeze/thaw potential.

I'm so sorry I've been steering everyone wrong for the past 2-1/2 years.

I'm so sorry I've been steering everyone wrong for the past 2-1/2 years.

The temps in my house fluctuate to more extremes, I would still think those with older nic stored in freezer would have noticed by now. I'm still keeping mine in the freezer for lack of better options. Definitely no room in the fridge for it.

I will not swear that my bubble wrap "insulation" (spoken of in the Deeming thread) will prevent this degradation, I am going to choose to believe that it does, stick my head back deeply into the sand and not worry about it..

I have 2 unopened 250 ML containers in the freezer and 1 that I have opened and use to mix. The opened one has been in the freezer for about six months before I opened it. I take that out once a month to mix ejuice up. I let it warm up to room temp over night and use it. That nicotine is still clear with no noticeable yellowing.

That is certainly a large temp fluctuation in letting warm up and refreezing it. No problem so far. Though maybe I should start breaking it up to 30 ML glass bottles for storage.

My "freezered" 2014 nic that I finished this spring was as good as new.
How many times per day to you open your freezer? Your refrigerator?
I open my chest freezer once a month at most, usually much less.

The 'new' one I just opened is as clear as brand new and tastes as new.

All my chest freezer nic is in 250ml bottles.
When I pull one out it's because I finished the 250ml in my fridge/freezer.
The 250ml in my fridge/freezer feeds my 60ml using bottle that stays in the back of my fridge.
I don't let it warm up when I use it. I pull it, use it for my mix and get it back in the fridge within a couple of minutes. It stays clear from 60ml to 0ml. No problem.
