In fact, the chip is taking the input (switch) in over an analog to digital channel (in an auto). So it's analog.

There is no requirement at all for the chip. It's primary purpose, in fact, is to control the charge cycle and light the LED. You can happily make a fully functional device with no chip.

Regardless - doesn't a cigarette generally get lit with a lighter or match that is either burning or not burning? Digital. (if we use your argument)

of all the anti-"analog" term threads, this by far has to be the best :p and at least better than "The less Douchey" thread :D

IMO You definately need to venture of to the other subs more often... not to spam or anything :p... put to contribute to the other parts of this community ..... I definately can see you as an asset :D

anyway just popped in to say nice post :p

MK - generally I would defend my position in a debate or discussion involving differing opinions.

Joe Camel - good point!

Timothy>> and you cant light a cigrette with an unlit match ive tried

Touché!

Duckman - I'm glad you let us know your opinion and didn't just clam up. ;) Thanks too for the vote of confidence, but I scarcely have time to keep up here, let alone the rest of the forum vastness! Again, appreciated though!

MK, it's my fault... i resurrected a dead thread. mah bad. but i do so love to see drenalynn throw down, i couldn't help it.

and as a linguist... (keep the dirty jokes to yerself, you think linguists are unfamiliar with puns?)... i'm curious to see how the terminology will develop if vaping Takes Over the World. sincerely. now, i don't really have any opinion on how it should go, but it really is intriguing to watch a new vocabulary evolving, from scratch, and over the internet. i should drag another friend i've converted over here, she's a communications kid working on her master's right now and has done a bit of work on internet phenomenon.

from a linguistics point of view... this is just my opinion off the cuff from accumulated reading, but i could back it up i think... those of you who like the term 'analog' need not argue with poor 'drenalynn. she can wander all she likes and defend her opinion, but majority rules when it comes to language. tis the nature of the beast. no matter how correct she is in her assessment of the digital vs. analog nature of vaping/smoking. especially on the internet and in an internet-influenced language culture. the search engine algorithms have us by the short hairs.

not being a hard-science geek myself, my terms of choice are vaping/PV (personal vaporizer) and smoking/cigarette. i do personally strongly dislike the term 'e-cigarette', but i just think it's inelegant more than anything else.

I don't use term cigarettes because I'm a terrible speeler. Every time I try it comes out ciggerates and my spell checker will not recognize that word it gives me hints like exaggerate or refrigerates.

I totally agree though about the term analog. Now I'm going to refer cigarettes as "firesticks" and my vaporking as my " Super Cancerless Rockin Excellent Wonderful Ultimate" or Screw U for short

Belle, I agree - to a point. (Saw that comin' didntcha?)

All it takes is a single utterance and a few years later there's a major war and it may or may not end-up in the dictionary (next to a bunch of stupid colloquialisms that don't belong...). A debate is certainly warranted before we accept some non-standard usage as gospel. Local use and general colloquialisms need to be able to withstand the test of time and the test of geography - the only way I know how to contribute to that process is via debate.

yup--agree. if enough opinions are swayed, then a change can be made (or prevented). but i think you have a tough row to hoe. unfortunately, i think that analog/digital are being used here as synonyms for low tech/high tech, so it's not merely a matter of making the point that "cigarettes are to PVs as analog is to digital" isn't correct. you have to first educate them as to what analog and digital mean in a technical sense, which is, from this thread, obviously going to be difficult. :D and once that's accomplished, they'll have to care.

now, i think that there's a fighting chance it could be done, with a concentrated campaign. here's where i think the problem will be though... i think while it might be a time-killer/amusement to discuss it here in a thread, i think that you just have way too many better things to do than head up a terminology-awareness campaign in any serious sense. ;)

if it makes you feel any better, i tried out "analogs" as a term, as it was forumspeak here, for a few weeks and just couldn't do it.

i'd be surprised if it made its way into common usage though, even if vaping becomes wide-spread. i could be wrong, but my feeling is that since it's a term that's already in usage in many other ways, and will depend so very heavily on context to be understood to mean cigarettes, it's too clumsy.
