Oh yeah?! I'll have to try both extremes- in the middle now as a start.

I do find keeping the wick short as possible but poked fully through is absolutely best. Experimentally, I've tried the combinations/methods. Fluid dynamics agrees too: expose the most cross section and travel the shortest length whilst keeping the holes plugged.

You should also try different size coils also. I started with 3 and went up tp 4mm then someone else here suggested trying a 2mm and the 2 worked best for flavor.

Yep, many of us :) It's funny how subjective flavor is... I find the dual-coil engine little over average in flavor and the nano about average to little under. Personally I don't vape for flavor, but for not to smoke, so I don't care, and also use unflavored DIY nonetheless(though that too has a flavor certantly, though mild and unobtrusive that never gets old). I've tried from 2mm to 3.5mm, and coil high and low. I only use 26g or 24g ss316l roundwire in TC, spaced, and around 45 watts in the nano. I also keep the AF wide open, which probably is the culprit, but don't enjoy a restricted lunghit myself. I wick tightly, both with rayon and cotton(experimenting currently), though tighter with rayon obviously, and fluff/thin tails and keep very short, only to dip into top of juice-holes and not through or to the buttom as no need, and atleast high-VG works better with short tails and tight wick in my experience. I use 3.5mm ID currently.

I have found that round wire works best for me. I vape for flavor only. The wick in my Nano's go thru the holes and hit the bottom. It works better with my 100% PG liquids. I also only vape MTL... the way I used to smoke.

I have only used a few fancy coils so far and I plan on trying more someday.

so i just rebuild my nano with 26ga ss316l 3.5 ID 7wraps spaced. im getting much better flavor with this compared to the clapton build. and funny thing i kept getting dry hits with this (pretty much) same build (3mm ID though) on my Serpent mini...

Dry hits = too much wick.

I've stuck with twisted kanthal. 26 since last July - cheap, mechanically strong, coil base resistance is just a bit higher than 26awg ss316l single strand. Since I like to be able to toss tanks onto a mech, non varying resistance is a plus for me.
