Just my opinion but I see no advantage to plugging the bottom air hole. It works well. I also see no advantage to putting the additional air hole on the opposite side. It is best, in my opinion, to put an extra hole in the same vertical line as the stock hole, anywhere from 5/16" to 7/16" above the stock hole.

I plugged the hole bc I was tired of having excess juice come out of the airhole, when I dripped some juice in it. Plus with the new drilled hole I can aim the airhole at my coil by simply turning the top cap.

That hole is 1.2mm. I'm toying with the idea of going to 1.6 but it's working just fine as it is.

Everything I have is at a minimum 1.6mm, it is the happy spot for me. I can do direct lung hits or normal pulls no problem with that size. I have a couple that are 2mm airholes too, and then gigantic 1/8ish hole on this one

Ok so I got my new hole drilled and its great ( did not block stock air hole) and got my setup going. One 3 inch piece of 2mm silica folded 4 times then wrapped a 30 guage 4 wrap for 1.7 ohms and made the wicks look pretty! ImageUploadedByTapatalk1372367268.188380.jpg

Hi guys -

I've got an Octopus that I bought from a local B&M and I'm getting poor flavor (albeit decent vapor volume) with my rebuilds. I've got a coil built off of 32AWG Nichrome paired with cotton gauze as a wick. I'm vaping 50/50 Fuzion Ectoplasm and normally get good flavor. The coil meters at 2.4 ohms and I'm running it on a VV mod at 4.0 - 4.3V

Any ideas? I haven't drilled the side of it yet, but I'm not sure that's where my problem lies.

Have you made sure that the hole in the cover is lined up with the hole in the base?

well, one problem down, one added :(

I resolved the taste issue by rebuilding my coil with more attention to the details (coil spacing, leg length). Unfortunately, I overdid a mod to my Octopus - I put in another air hole but now it's TOO BIG and the vape is waaaaaaaaaaaaay too airy. Tape seems an easy solution, but I wonder about the tape melting? Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :)

I don't know about duct tape, but I wouldn't hesitate to use teflon plumbing tape. It wouldn't stick well, though... you'd forever have to be replacing it.

I've done exactly the same as you have, made holes too big. In fact, didn't learn my lesson the first time and repeated the mistake on another RDA. Fixed one with a small sheet metal screw... it now looks like a FrankenOctopus with the spike sticking out the side. The other RDA, I put a drop of solder over the hole from the inside. The solder didn't want to actually fill the hole, so it covers the hole instead.

Breaking off the tip of a toothpick in the holes would have been more than acceptable to me, but I didn't have any toothpicks.

Grimm drilled a hole that was 1/64 of an inch larger than the one you drilled.

Personally, I don't agree with Grimm that the stock hole design is stupid. I think it's clever and more importantly, I think it produces a good vape. I also don't agree that a large additional hole is needed. In fact I don't see the need for any additional hole, but that's a matter of personal taste. If I was going to do it again, the extra hole would have to be smaller than 1/16 of an inch, and I don't have any drill bits that small.

Also, I would drill the extra hole in a direct vertical line with the stock hole, so that it would be facing the coil and as close to the coil as possible.

If you read through this thread you'll see that my opinion is just one of a great number of very different opinions regarding the care and feeding of the Octopus.

The cottontail bunny that I saw a video for was not made with silicone wick, but with cotton wick. From what I've heard, some people buy "peaches 'n' cream" wool yarn to make cotton wicks. They boil it several times (to get out any dye or chemicals). I've also heard of cotton wicks being made from cotton balls or pads. Ekowool is silicone, to the best of my knowledge.

Its silica not silicone... but in any case it can be used o make the "cottontail" wick the difference in my opinion between cotton and silica is negligible really. The "technique" used in the cottontail wick is what makes it work well more so then the specific material. If you prefer cotton then go for cotton.. I find silica and in particular ekowool silica to be a bit better then even cotton in RDA's

Thanks for the correction. Something didn't look quite right when I typed "silicone" but I couldn't quite figure out why.
