Well this is my first time in the Library. Very entertaining indeed. I was feeling rather outside the group with all the talk about sci-fi, vampires, etc. I've never been into those kind of reads. But then BM mentioned Jeffrey Deaver and my eyes lit up! He is one of my favoritest authors! Love him. My BIL and I have all his books I think between us. I love good mystery novels. My eyes perked up with your mention of Historical Drama, Vicks, too. Will take suggestions in that category.

I noticed someone earlier mentioned Audible.com. I'm very interested in audio books. I drive for a living and spend many hours on the same roads every day and would love to find a reasonable place to rent audio books. Will check that out or any other suggestions you guys have. Happy reading!!

I think the new Kindle also has the ability to "read" a book to you. One of these days, when I'm not spending huge chunks of change on PV's, I might have to get me one of those.

I'll dig through my collection and put up some reviews for Historical Dramas for you, Jo......in the meantime, look up River God....

Well I checked out Audible.com and saw it was for Ipods and MP3s so that ruled out me. I'm still in the dark ages and use CD's. LOL I think I saw a Kindle on Oprah once when I used to watch her. If I remember right they are rather spendy. I started checking Ebay last night and found some audio books pretty reasonably priced. Might just do that. Those renting places are a little too spendy for me.

Is River God the title?

Yup - River God by Wilbur Smith. Ancient Egypt comes alive. Fantastic read.

Jo....All this time spent here, and this is your first visit to the Library....Shame on you..LOL!! No need to rent audio books, when you can download them directly to your hard drive and play them on your mp3 player. Check out a few of the torrent sites for them. Demonoid is where I get most of mine,I think you can download up to 3 torrents a day without being a member(unfortunatly the registration is closed at the moment). They do have some great stuff for your listening pleasure there!:)The Wiz!(Try Pirate Bay also...I think they have audiobooks as well)

I've never really gotten into the audio books - I think its more satisfying to have the paper experience. Hence my entire library....I've got bookshelves upon bookshelves, and still they spill over onto the nightstand, the porch, the kitchen table...... all over. I'm never without a book.

Well Wiz, I'm not electronically advanced and do not have a MP3 player or Ipod. I want them to listen to in the vehicle I drive for work. Spend a lot of hours on the road and am getting tired of talk radio. Thought it would be nice to listen to some books. I used to do that when I had to make numerous trips back and forth between Colorado and Iowa when my Mom was sick. Really enjoyed them. Made the miles melt away. I'm not real wild about having things stuck in my ears anyway. I know, I'm weird.

Can you download audible books then burn them to a CD?
Vicks.......Yes you can! I use i-tunes to burn my mp3 files to cd.It's very easy to do,select files, click "burn to cd" and done!! Some people use other programs to do the same thing, but I found i-tunes to be the easiest method.:)The Wiz!

I think I may have found another good vampire book..... Single White Vampire by Lynsay Sands.

I'm about half-way through this one...so far, a lot of humor, good byplay between the 2 main characters, a nice set up, and some very freakish banter between the 2.
Lynsay Sands has a good style, building up the tension between the characters, interjecting some humor, and making them breathe in the mind.

My opinion of this book didn't change at the finish - I can give it an enthusiastic thumbs up..... but that's what I'd expect of Linsay Sands.

The spot in the book where a 600+ year old vampire has to get "protection" is hysterical!!!! Priceless! Get this one if you need a good laugh.

Here's another series I think worth mentioning - at least the early books. The later ones aren't as good - I think the author might be "tired" of the characters, and pushing the limits of a story.

Children of the Lamp
Author: PB Kerr

Another fantasy genre - the main characters are 2 children who have recently found out they are ginn - the geinie in the lamp - literally. In the first book, they find out that they are part of this alternate class of intelegent being, and learn about the culture, the ups and downs, etc.
The plot of the book (like so many others) is the epic struggle of good vs evil - where of course good triumphs.

These were written for children - the mean age would probably be 10-15ish - all that means is a clean book with no inunendo and simple humor (perfect for someone, say......like our Ricky :D)

The first 3 books, I would say, are good. After that they take a distinct turn downhill. But, enjoy!

Thanks Vicks....for the warning..LOL...I have started a new book today(to go along with the four unfinished ones I have)Titled: The Bleeding Season by Greg F.Gifune......Kind of a murder mystery involving 4 childhood friends grown to adulthood....only into 2 chapters...but looks promising...The author is known for "Dark Horror" so we will see what happens here(So far I am not scared..LOL)...More to follow!!!:)The Wiz!
Sorry to quote myself, but the book mentioned above....halfway through now..characters are very believable...pending an awful ending I would give this one a:thumb:The Wiz!

Now that we have that out of the way...... I was talking here some time back about the new Jeffry Deaver book "The Broken Window" and now that it's finished, I can tell you it was pretty good. As usual, he developes his characters quite well. Lincoln and Amanda are back in all their glory. As are Pullaski, Thom and the rest.
I'd reccomend this one as a definate read for all Deaver fans!

Title: Halfway to the Grave (book 1)
Author: Jeaniene Frost

This is a good series of 3 linked books, where the main characters continue on their story throughout the series....the first book (titled here) is an origin style, where we meet the two characters for the first time, and get to explore the dynamics between them.

The female lead is a cross-breed, her father is a newly-turned vampire who raped her mother, so she is kinda like the daywalker in the Blade series - the strengths of the vampire, but none of the weaknesses. The male lead is a fully turned vampire, who hunts others of his kind. Their goal, of course, is to find her father and exact revenge.

there is a good amount of sex in this book (paranormal romance) with plenty of violence and posturing throughout. Excellent read, for all you who love a good vampire novel.....highly recommended....
