If Indiana's new smokefree workplace law hadn't exempted bars, Indianapolis/Marion County wouldn't have banned e-cig use, and South Bend wouldn't be proposing to do the same.

The only municipalities that have introduced ordinances that ban smoking and e-cig use in workplaces are in states where smoking is still allowed in bars.

So if it weren't for bar owners and right-to-smoke advocates (who have defeated state legislation to ban smoking in bars), we wouldn't be facing these municipal ordinances that ban smoking and e-cig use in workplaces.

I don't know that it's fair to blame "right-to-smoke advocates" for politicians' poor decisions . . . and treating e-cigarettes in exactly the same fashion as smoking is indeed a poor decision.

I doubt that strict smoking bans are going to result in e-cigarettes getting a free pass. Just look at Massachusetts . . . the state has a pretty strict smoke-free law, and yet local municipalities just can't seem to help themselves in passing more onerous restrictions (most of which treat e-cigarettes like smoking), including outdoor smoking bans when there's absolutely zero proof that smoking or vaping outdoors is hazardous to bystanders.

I've emailed the South Bend common council twice with educational information and links. I will be sending out another one Monday morning with even more information that i hope they will choose to ingest so that they can make an educated decision. I would implore anyone else in the area to do the same.

I'm not naive enough to think i can personally change their mind, but i'm optimistic enough to hope that if they receive enough info that they won't/can't ignore it.

It's called creeping eugenics, coming to a soda fountain near you.

I read this in another subforum here, but I agree: Calling them ECigarettes does nothing to help the stigma we're facing. They already "look" like cigarettes (we usually buy lookalikes to start), they make "smoke" (we know otherwise but average person on average street doesn't). For decades we've been hammered by ads warning the dangers of tobacco use and unfortunately nicotine and tobacco go hand in hand as far as the general public is concerned. Now they see us all vaping in their face and do the little "cough cough" when vapour is seen, it's an automatic reaction because EVERYONE knows smoke is tobacco and it will kill you if you smell it. Now they get to read about legislation and the misinformation throughout it and think "Government says it's bad it must be just as bad as tobacco. It's so new we don't know what thousands of chemicals are being used like they do in tobacco."

It's a knee jerk reaction brought on by decades of anti-smoking ads and very loud voices and health care costs. Smoking is bad, pvs make smoke, pvs are bad. They won't trust studies, because they tested tobacco and results were fudged by BT mid-century. All nicotine is bad and all companies are corrupt.

As I posted in the canada forum, will a ban make a difference? Will any of you up and stop vaping and start tobacco, or will you look into less legitimate sources? The flood gates are already open, new members are signing up here by the hundreds daily (or thousands, I don't have the stats), many from countries that have bans and outirght making them illegal. They still prefer to skirt the law than continue smoking. Personally, I will face importing nic+ flavourless from china and risk having it seized before I go back to tobacco. If I couldn't get the nic+ I would 100% definitely still be a smoker, and I'm not going back down that road.

So do we have any ground troops there?
Any vendors?

Kalamazoo Vapor Shop is about 80 minutes away. I sent the owner an e-mail.

I contacted someone on ECF from South Bend, but never heard back from them.

These cities are within ~40 minutes of South Bend:
In Indiana: Mishawaka, Granger, Elkhart, Plymouth
In Michigan: Niles
