Org. Cotton Balls vs Koh-Gen-Doh

Im thinkin of buyin a bag of org cotton balls from local CVS, since I have heard of others doing this. Up until now, I have been using the classic KGD square pads.

Aside from the form that the materials come it, is there any difference in performance when comparing the 2 (i.e. flavor, wicking ability etc.)?

I use the non organic 100% USA cotton Salon Coil from Sally Beauty supply and like it fine. Easier to use than cotton balls it is about a thumb sized aligned fiber non twisted cotton rope about 40 feet long for a bit over $3.
I do not notice any real difference in performance from when I used the KGD pads. I gave those to the wife unit to use on her face.

Once seeing they didnt have it, I read your reply again and see "non organic."


I would never use bleached, non organic cotton.

Sorry about that.
I expect I will die a horrible lingering death, but not from bleached non organic cotton.

It tastes and acts pretty much just like the KGD to me.
Several on here use the Walgreens organic cotton balls.

Seriously though... I should have used emojis and whatnot in order to express that I was not angry or cross at you; nor was I disgusted at your choice to vape the non-org. I may, or may not have been driving at the time I replied... so I was typing fast.

I am sure that cigarettes were 1,000,000 times worse mate.

nah, its cool... I was already out n about doing some other things (such as grabbin a pack of them silver little screwdrivers for wrappin coils, etc), so "we cool."

I'm gonna say it's all preference, and since the cotton balls are cheap I'd just get them and use them for something else if you don't like them. They're pretty easy to unroll by gently peeling the end off if you can find it, or pushing a finger slowly through the center. Just smooth it out, snip off the piece you want. I do 3mm coils usually and just take that piece of the cotton ball and tear it in half and roll it in my palms lightly to form a cylinder and put that in the coil. I haven't used KGD but I use Shiseido usually. I can't tell a difference in flavor, very slight if anything. The biggest difference is in ease of use, but with things going on I haven't been able to focus on things and get the Shiseido at the right thickness. I started using cotton balls earlier today and it's been easier.

So...short version, try it and see which you like best lol.

I'm trying cotton balls now... first few attempts have leaked, I think I didn't use enough. The cotton in the cotton balls is so much fluffier than KGD or other pads that I think it's easy to not use enough. I'm going to try gently rolling it first to see if that helps.

I bought some rayon from Sally's and had the same problem - leaks. It's REALLY fluffy!

My problem--I put in too much, it starts burning; too little, it starts leaking. Too much of a headache for me...

I get organic cotton balls on Amazon.

I don't really like Kojendo pads. Harder to guess the amount of cotton to use. Than orgsnic cotton balls. If too little remove wick add a few fibers. If too much pull a few fibers out of the cotton behind the coil.

No problems with wicking OCC heads, RDAs or my Goblin Mini..

Personally I think Kojendo is over hyped and over priced.

There is only wwo ways I would use Kojendo.

1 chimney build on my Goblin Mini, or the hobbit hole coil.

Other than those I use organic cotton balls.

With cotton balls it is difficult to get the right amount of wicking consistently, With Koh Gen Do I get the right amount every time.

I think you will find that rolling the cotton will solve the problem.

I never understood why everyone is so wary of bleached cotton balls. It is not as if the stuff is bleached with "Clorox". They use Hydrogen Peroxide, which is nothing but H2O saturated with an extra atom of Oxygen. If anything, the peroxide disinfects the cotton. The only objection I could see to "non-organic" is the use of fertilizers in growing the cotton.

Sterile does not mean safe to breath. Hydrgen peroxide vapor will kill within minutes at a very low PPM.
That something is a sterilant has nothing to do with its effect on human life. In fact, most sterilants, by their very natures, are extraordinarily toxic.

What is HO ? Anyway, Peroxide is not toxic. In fact it is used as a mouth wash. And it does not leave any residue. It disintegrates into water and oxygen.

My kayfun lites would ALWAYS suffer leaks with strips off organic balls. I switched to the pads and not a single time. It did take some trial and error to get the amount right BUT.. It would always just not wick great immediately before i screwed it all back together and filled it. Once i was at that point the pad cotton has not caused an issue.

No difference in taste either, if you have pads already i would reckon the balls are a downgrade in my humble opinion.

Peroxide disintegrates into water and oxygen once it is dry. Completely harmless. Nothing in that article contradicts this point. In fact it states the vapor is sometimes released into the outside air once it has done its job. It does kill viruses and bacteria, but only in its active form - before it breaks up into H2O and a molecule of oxygen.
