Sorry to hear that :vapor:

The maker of the orion disagrees with you:

" I do not give warranty for this reason, the switch is not protected and is used extremely, on the border of an electrical short circuit"

mine is the newest version from the latest run, no melted insulator, no leaks or juice on the switch. failed in 3 days... gonna order like 3 switches. If it gets to the point where I'm on my last switch I'm going to sell (unless i just get bored and sell to get other mods).

What is the difference between regular Kanthal and Ribbon Kathal?

Could be wrong but I think it's the same as regular kanthal except ribbon is flat so it gives you more surface area coverage on your wick.

Orion 2.1, 69 Mod with Cobra Atty, 28ga Kanthal, 5/6 wrap.

Lorderos,

So nice to 'see' you!

Thanks for the vote of confidence & all the help you've given me by PM in the past.

I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY like my Orion v 2.1 so far. Too early to say how I'll feel long-term. It's my first non-Zen genny & I'm looking to venture out even farther, budget restraints notwithstanding. On the list for a Caravela. But what to put on top of it is they real key, I know. Hoping Pedro's atty will be available soon, otherwise I'm not sure which RBA will do it justice.

Course I could hold out for the Orion v 3. But variety, is indeed, the spice....

regular kanthal is spaghetti, ribbon is linguine or fettuccine

the "synthesis" by the iHybrid creator faceless will replace the top cap on a 22mm tube and make it a hybrid, or check the stratus by jherron here on ECF.

That bad huh?

No it is not.

I had a switch go out on one Orion. It was leaking through the centerpole. I remedied it and way back in this thread is a few howtos posted. My friend's did the same thing... leaked and did the switch failure thing.

I typically use 2 PVs, my Vaper @ work, and my Orion from the time I get home till I go to bed and all weekend. I am still using the same switch from when I had the failure (late spring?). I have developed a hate for bottom buttons from the Zen and even the new iHy...

1. Make sure liquid is not getting in through center pole.
2. Never put battery + towards switch.
3. Keep dry burns short. I only dry burn to check shorts on a dry wick after build, and with wick removed to clean.
4. Make sure you do not mistakenly fire it. Carry it in a multi-tool pouch or similar and this won't happen.

More flavor/vapor production, less heating up time than thick round/regular kanthal. a real winner :)

I need to try this someday but my coils last so long I'm not in a rush. I heard it took longer to heat up on another forum. So less time? Are you using your Orion more than the NGP these days?

Heating time depends on what you are using now. The ribbon kanthal I have is around 9ohms/foot, closest to that is 30AWG kanthal in terms of resistance, so that's about as long as it take to heat up.

My previous kanthal of coice was 28 AWG (preferred the flavor of 27 but that takes too long to get to operating temperature.

As with anything mesh/coil related it comes down to personal preference and weighing the pros and cons for yourself.

I have been using my NGP. I have been testing my V3 with a variable chamber-size top cap and the reduced top cap (by about 4mm) improves the flavor greatly on it. It is also much easier to set up (anodizing) than the orion (which is a bit of a nightmare due to the small wick hole diameter).

I think the orion has the better chamber dimensions (ergo better vapor texture, flavor) and also better ergonomics.

with the new flat kanthal, the orion setup is much easier, so I think my orion will be getting more use...

The Fogatti will also be a nice combo with a Caravela

xformulax,

Thanks for the info. I've got a couple other ideas, too. Like the Z-atty-U & the Senio.

Sorry, everyone, for taking us off topic.

It's fugly? :D

Trust me I know!

Yea, someone lost their SS button and replaced it with a nylon one from a Riva or other similar batt. Been there, but found the SS button hiding in the other room!

Thanks for the help! Any ideas on how to get a new button?
