He's a beautiful bird, love the bright colors. Birds are so much fun. I had two. A Moluccan cockatoo and a Severe Macaw. I got the kid and the dog in the divorce, he got the birds. Not sure who got the better deal.

If I get a bird it'll either be an African Grey ($$$$) or what Pharaoh has, a Jenday Conure. Pharaoh, can you tell me a bit about keeping and caring for a bird? How'd you toilet train it (him?)

I think I'd really like having a bird. Need to find a home for this rug ....ting cat first. A bird would have zero chance with him around.

Do you just let the bird fly around the house? Doesn't it drop birdie bombs all over? I'm intrigued, I'll have to do some research.

I'm curious, too. Spill it, Pharaoh. :)

It is a long time commitment life spans of the bigger birds are longer than yours ;). My bird is free to go anyplace in the house. He mostly just stays in this room with his cage. When everyone is gone he does choose to stay in his cage but the door is always open. All birds are different this is just what mine does.

When I first got him he would just poop when ever he wanted to poop and anyplace. Watched a few videos and did some reading on potty training. First I just got some of the dog bathroom pads and put one on the back of the couch (need something close to both of you). When he was about to go (once you know your bird you when know when this is by body language) I would just set him on the pad. I would then tell him "POOP!" After a week he would get off me himself and walk over to the pad and "POOP" . I would also tell him to "poop" before I would pick him up at his cage and not pick him up until he would poop or try. It did not take long I then moved the pad in front of his cage and now he just poops at cage. He will fly to his cage and poop now and poop (or try) before he flies to me. Just got to say "Poop!" LOL Best NOT to use treats but only positive words when training or they will not poop at all until they get a treat..lol not good for them at all.

Best to get a bird from a breeder or anyplace other than a pet store. Also many birds around that need a good FOREVER home, it may be a little more work at first but well worth it, so may look around for bird rescues.

About the only thing my bird wants and must have is love..lol but he does need clean water everyday and fill up his food dish when needed (eats like a bird). He does take a shower with me everyday. Says "Don't look I'm naked!" when I undress..lol. A bird is really not a decision to go into lightly and truly would not recommend it to most people.

I would definitely check out a rescue place first. I just don't know if I can commit my life to owning a bird. My 3 50-65# dogs are enough. But I do find it interesting. I think it's awesome that your bird is free to roam the house. Has he ever got outside?

Did some research on them. Yeah, I'm probably too lazy for one. Think I might get some fishies instead. I wonder how big of a tank I'd need to grow a 25 pound largemouth...

I have a 250 gallon built in (seperates the kitchenette from the living room). No way even a tank that big would support a 25lb largemouth. Well, maybe one. But it's quality of life would suck.

Yes, he goes outside with me sometimes when it is nice. His wings are not clipped so if he wanted he could fly off forever, but he always stays right on me, he is a little scared of outside. lol
He has never caused a problem or damaged anything so will always be free to roam the house. This house is just as much his as mine so no reason to lock him up. I only have to put him up if someone he does not like comes over. He also hates the mail man much like a dog..lol He knows when the mail man comes and will "Bark" at him and go crazy at the windows (learned to bark from neighbors dogs).
He thinks it chases the mail man off as he always leaves..lol
