I don't usually do "reviews" per se. I just thought I might actually try to contribute to the community rather than be a drain.

Just received my Phidius Woodimus from Nhaler in the mail and wanted to give a first impression of this device, and my first experience with LR vaping.

Phidius Woodimus, the good the bad and the ugly.

The Good

The model I purchased is made from a very dense, durable wood called Purpleheart. The photos belie the color of this stuff. Yes it is purple, but it is not nearly as garish as in the photos. It is a rich, dark wood with purple undertones. Under the right light it seems to jump out at you without being obnoxious. Over time this wood will be come richer and darker. The dings that make metal/plastic mods undesirable will add character and depth to wood.

The inlays are meticulous. No gaps, spaces or remnants of wood glue. It appear to be hand sanded and finished. Even though it is precise and tight, it gives the impression that each unit was lovingly crafted for YOU without regard for mass production.

The button is simple hard, black plastic unit. Before I purchased this mod, the button was a real concern for me. A good solid button is paramount. This one appears to be fairly high quality, with a tactile feel and a good solid click. There is no question that this button is doing it's job.

The Woodimus is as large as a pack of Camel bare-asses, but is ergonomic enough to fit the hand. I have man hands, granted, but my wife has tiny hands and had no complaints. Your mileage may vary.

The electronics are simple. Not much in the way of innovation here. This is not necessarily a bad thing. They are not trying to reinvent the wheel. They took the basic box mod wiring and made damned sure they did it well. The soldering is clean, the wires are set in a way that they won't get snagged, pulled or prodded. In fact, I was very taken aback by how the wires are coiled, snugged and set in such an unobtrusive way.

The back is easily removable, and has a little area next to the battery housing that allows storage of a little 5ml bottle of juice. (Drew sent two samples of juice with the unit, so you will always have two at your disposal)

A 18650 battery fits perfectly. I was also able to squeeze in two AW 16340's without a problem. Not sure if the switch is okay to handle that, but the whole point for me was to go back to 3.7v LR vaping. I will definately be asking the big man if HV is okay on this mod and giving it a go.

The Bad

The back is held on by a small magnet that sets between a screw in the Woodimus and the back panel. It is effective at keeping it on, in fact this little dude has quite the grip. Such a grip has he, that it will sometimes stick to the battery when you remove it. Then you gotta dig around and find it. A couple times it was enough to actually pull the battery off with the back.

I don't know much about these types of things, but if that magnet loses its potency, it could be a real issue. And if you lose that magnet you are up the creek.
I think this could be improved by using a sliding back panel with that little dovetail cut, like on the wooden snuff boxes.

The little storage area for the 5ml of juice is kinda cute, and marginally handy, however, due to having to mess with that magnet, makes me groan a little inside everytime I have to access the bottle.

This is really just a minor convinience. This would be a nice area to put a coveted AFS system in, or perhaps a retractable atty.

The Ugly

The price. $160 bucks is an ugly price. But then again, most mods to me have an ugly price. I can certainly understand this. These are not disposable mods. You will not need to replace it every 4 weeks. And any maintenance on this thing can be done with a quick trip to Radio Shack, with little technical ingenuity.

Anything handcrafted will cost a premium, more so with woodworking. This is a lost art and is becoming a rarity.

Is it hard to dole out $160 bucks on the gamble that this is the mod for you?
You bet your sweet can it is.

Am I sorry I did?
Not even remotely.

LR Vaping

This mod came with a 1.68 ohm atty. I also tried this with a 1.5 ohm atty.
I will just cut to the chase and say, "I love LR vaping!"

I have read so many opinions about LR vs. HV that it makes my head spin. To me it's really apples and oranges.
I'll try to put it in perspective. I love Atomic Cinnacide at 6+ volts. It is intense, has huge throat hit, great vapor and warm sweet draws.
The flavor with LR is much more mellow, but equally rich and enjoyable. The vapor is not as warm as in HV draws, but makes up for it in thick (if not thicker), fluffy, plumes of vapor. For those of you that thought this flavor was far too intense... you might like it at LR.. still sweet and rich without the harsh intensity.

With the LR atties, I don't feel that I have to use HV as an all day vape anymore. This is almost better. I don't burn through juice as fast, my attys don't get nearly as hot.... in fact, I haven't popped an atty all day... and believe me I've been trying.... I am after all an attystomper. The life cycle of these things is not within the scope of this post, unfortunately.

The mellow, laid back experience of these attys compliments the look and the feel of the Phidius Woodimii perfectly.

This is the mod I would take to the park, lay back and watch the clouds roll by...adding my own white, floofy vapor against the clear blue sky.

Thumbs up to the Woodimus, if it's within your means, I recommend. If you can't afford one, please do give LR vaping a try.

Edit: The gentleman that crafts these mods was nice enough to PM me. The bottle space in the back is 3ml not 5ml. As luck would have it, he is local to me, so he will be showing me a "lid-trick" which I will include in my follow up.

Hey Waffle,

Nice write-up i do not own a Woody would love too but price is a little steep not that the workmanship does not reflect in the price and some might say its to low! But 160 of the bat for a mod that does what others do for cheaper is what stops me....and trust me i have a buy all MODS addiction

Secondly i wanted to comment on the LR i have three of them i have been using one all day on one of my chucks with a 18650 and its crazy INSANLY
crazy.....

I noticed that after almost ten hours using this LR atty i feel like i dont want nor need a 6 volt vape im content.......And also like you said not one of my batts have got hot or anything i feel safer not having to run a series of batts and i almost want to say its better then a 6volt vape.

But the only thing stopping me is the life of these attys i have heard varying results from a couple of days up to two weeks so time will tell
also the price is a little higher

but hopefully as more vendors get these LR attys price will drop and quality will go up

I appreciate the review. I've been wanting a Woodimus since they first came to my attention a few weeks ago. And, if it weren't for the fact that money is a bit tight for me just now I would have one in hand already. Your review has done nothing to lessen my desire for one. Maybe I should get a couple LR atties to use with my TorneGo battery until I can get the Woodimus. :) I've already got the batteries and charger.

The funny thing is, I just bought a ton of rc123s LiMn batteries to replace my old stock. Many of them are 3.0v to meet my 6v vaping needs. Not sure whats gonna happen to them... But it's good to have them, if one thing hanging around here has taught me is never get comfortable.. something new and exciting always comes along.

I hope to see LR atties of different varieties soon, if they don't already exist.

You certainly won't be missing out on the LR goodness without the Woody, it just makes it a little prettier :)

Mods are super-expensive for sure. Right now, I don't mind paying the premium. I am getting rid of the ones I don't like and adding the unique ones to my collection. To me they are a little piece of history.

We are part of a community struggling to keep our passion afloat. Every mod that comes out, no matter who wants to take credit for some new innovation is important. Right now it's all about quality and innovation. Every week a new shiny mod is introduced, and old mods are being improved.

I think thats really cool. Every mod in my collection has a story. I got to be there during a time when the designers were creating them. I got to talk to them, and I got to converse with the people that encourage and support them. Every mod I have will remind me of the people I met and the things I learned...hell, why else would I want to collect these damned things :D

Thanks for the kind words, and big props to all the guys that do unbiased reviews of these things...it's not easy knowing that you could be supporting a product that someone you respect may be at war with. I imagine it would also be even harder to give a negative review of a product made by someone you really respect.

Nah, just kidding! Through, unbiased and well written, and you've bothered to look at the build and complexity of the electronics involved, which is something that has never even occurred to me! You've just upped the competition for the rest of us, thanks a lot!! 8-o

You've also given the price and value of it, which is a benefit to the vapeing community. Also liked 'the good, the bad and the ugly' element of the review.

I've seen the mod, and Drew should take credit for using wooden mods. But to be honest, it's a little hard to get excited about a 2nd gen mod when there's so much innovation churning and bubbling to the surface with the 3rd (juicing mod) gens that modders all over the world are coming out with. It reminds me of the 'Tales of the Gun' documentaries that detail how one person came up with a breakthrough design and subsequent designers refined and improved upon it.

I'm currently lovin' on redeyedancer's wooden 3rd gen 801 tipped 'clyde2801' design. I came upon a ggts part on my kitchen counter and freaked out when it took me a minute to find the rest of the mod: I WOULD HAVE NEVER GUESSED THAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO.

Sorry about the long digression. Again, great review.

Thanks Clyde! I know what you mean about the other mods. I'm like you though, I'm fickle. I get really jazzed about any new mod I get, but a couple weeks later my tastes will change.

That's why I chose to do a review fresh outta the box. Always interested to see the one month follow ups.

Nice thing about the wood mods, easily easily upgradeable. :D

Actually, what I meant is the improvements and enhancements that the 3rd gens promise as compared with their predecessors. So far, the thirds are not the most reliable things out there, which is why I will keep my ggts for now (and one other reason). But they may to the point of being cherished backups and nostalgia pieces rather than my put in my suit pocket vapes...and that's only because none of the 3rd gens so far have stood up to any extended use so far (but the clyde2801 box may change that).

The other reason is the 2nd gen afs from imeo. If it's as enjoyable and dependable as the ggts, the combination may be hard to beat, even at the prices he's charging.

BTW, petercro's about to release a new mod, the markV. It's on his mkIII thread, and looks very promising. Small, made of ultra tough pvc plastic and using the cherished rn4081 bottom fed combo (which is ALMOST as good to vape as the carlos atty, and much more easily replaceable).

Clyde, you are gonna start costing me money again.

Honestly, I still haven't tried a juicebox. I noticed some of the new mods have some pretty cool mechanisms though...but I'm interested in that Juicebox atty despute the mixed reviews...in fact that makes me more interested. And I see there are som cool AFS mods popping, like the one you reviewed.... I'll have to sell off my fourth kidney.

I'd scoped out a couple possibilities, but I'd like to find one with an atty that isn't already broken in.

I'll get there eventually I suppose.. with money being tight, I have to start being judicious with my purchases from now on. The classifieds has saved my .....
