I don't usually do "reviews" per se. I just thought I might actually try to contribute to the community rather than be a drain.
Just received my Phidius Woodimus from Nhaler in the mail and wanted to give a first impression of this device, and my first experience with LR vaping.
Phidius Woodimus, the good the bad and the ugly.
The Good
The model I purchased is made from a very dense, durable wood called Purpleheart. The photos belie the color of this stuff. Yes it is purple, but it is not nearly as garish as in the photos. It is a rich, dark wood with purple undertones. Under the right light it seems to jump out at you without being obnoxious. Over time this wood will be come richer and darker. The dings that make metal/plastic mods undesirable will add character and depth to wood.
The inlays are meticulous. No gaps, spaces or remnants of wood glue. It appear to be hand sanded and finished. Even though it is precise and tight, it gives the impression that each unit was lovingly crafted for YOU without regard for mass production.
The button is simple hard, black plastic unit. Before I purchased this mod, the button was a real concern for me. A good solid button is paramount. This one appears to be fairly high quality, with a tactile feel and a good solid click. There is no question that this button is doing it's job.
The Woodimus is as large as a pack of Camel bare-asses, but is ergonomic enough to fit the hand. I have man hands, granted, but my wife has tiny hands and had no complaints. Your mileage may vary.
The electronics are simple. Not much in the way of innovation here. This is not necessarily a bad thing. They are not trying to reinvent the wheel. They took the basic box mod wiring and made damned sure they did it well. The soldering is clean, the wires are set in a way that they won't get snagged, pulled or prodded. In fact, I was very taken aback by how the wires are coiled, snugged and set in such an unobtrusive way.
The back is easily removable, and has a little area next to the battery housing that allows storage of a little 5ml bottle of juice. (Drew sent two samples of juice with the unit, so you will always have two at your disposal)
A 18650 battery fits perfectly. I was also able to squeeze in two AW 16340's without a problem. Not sure if the switch is okay to handle that, but the whole point for me was to go back to 3.7v LR vaping. I will definately be asking the big man if HV is okay on this mod and giving it a go.
The Bad
The back is held on by a small magnet that sets between a screw in the Woodimus and the back panel. It is effective at keeping it on, in fact this little dude has quite the grip. Such a grip has he, that it will sometimes stick to the battery when you remove it. Then you gotta dig around and find it. A couple times it was enough to actually pull the battery off with the back.
I don't know much about these types of things, but if that magnet loses its potency, it could be a real issue. And if you lose that magnet you are up the creek.
I think this could be improved by using a sliding back panel with that little dovetail cut, like on the wooden snuff boxes.
The little storage area for the 5ml of juice is kinda cute, and marginally handy, however, due to having to mess with that magnet, makes me groan a little inside everytime I have to access the bottle.
This is really just a minor convinience. This would be a nice area to put a coveted AFS system in, or perhaps a retractable atty.
The Ugly
The price. $160 bucks is an ugly price. But then again, most mods to me have an ugly price. I can certainly understand this. These are not disposable mods. You will not need to replace it every 4 weeks. And any maintenance on this thing can be done with a quick trip to Radio Shack, with little technical ingenuity.
Anything handcrafted will cost a premium, more so with woodworking. This is a lost art and is becoming a rarity.
Is it hard to dole out $160 bucks on the gamble that this is the mod for you?
You bet your sweet can it is.
Am I sorry I did?
Not even remotely.
LR Vaping
This mod came with a 1.68 ohm atty. I also tried this with a 1.5 ohm atty.
I will just cut to the chase and say, "I love LR vaping!"
I have read so many opinions about LR vs. HV that it makes my head spin. To me it's really apples and oranges.
I'll try to put it in perspective. I love Atomic Cinnacide at 6+ volts. It is intense, has huge throat hit, great vapor and warm sweet draws.
The flavor with LR is much more mellow, but equally rich and enjoyable. The vapor is not as warm as in HV draws, but makes up for it in thick (if not thicker), fluffy, plumes of vapor. For those of you that thought this flavor was far too intense... you might like it at LR.. still sweet and rich without the harsh intensity.
With the LR atties, I don't feel that I have to use HV as an all day vape anymore. This is almost better. I don't burn through juice as fast, my attys don't get nearly as hot.... in fact, I haven't popped an atty all day... and believe me I've been trying.... I am after all an attystomper. The life cycle of these things is not within the scope of this post, unfortunately.
The mellow, laid back experience of these attys compliments the look and the feel of the Phidius Woodimii perfectly.
This is the mod I would take to the park, lay back and watch the clouds roll by...adding my own white, floofy vapor against the clear blue sky.
Thumbs up to the Woodimus, if it's within your means, I recommend. If you can't afford one, please do give LR vaping a try.
Edit: The gentleman that crafts these mods was nice enough to PM me. The bottle space in the back is 3ml not 5ml. As luck would have it, he is local to me, so he will be showing me a "lid-trick" which I will include in my follow up.
