Beading wire
is not resistance wire, you made a dead short with that wire, thats why your springs collapsed.
If not for the safety of your spring collapsing you could have a battery melt down!
Don't use anything except kanthal A1
resistance wire or nichrome
resistance wire!
You guyz are gonna have to get a multimeter so you can check your coils for "resistance" and your battery "voltage".
If you had a meter you would have seen the short and saved your springs.
Without a meter your never gonna know what resistance you have or ever be able to repeat it when you find something you like.
If you use the same little screwdriver you have and did the same number of wraps with the same wire as your first coil you had you would be close. You still need to check things not only to know what resistance you have but for safety reasons also.
Theres all kinds of tutorials and videos for using a multimeter, you guyz need to learn a little more about wire, resistance and voltage to be safe and to get the most enjoyment from your REO.
And before some poor little lamb gets hurt just for it's cotton!
