That moves the rest of us up a little :) Need some advice on a source for high quality Kanthal wire and Silica or Ecowool. First, it seems Ecowool is preferred over Silica generally, is that right? Given I will be using the KF Lite, what gauge/size of each should I start out with? I'm not afraid to try a micro coil, just want a good starting point and a supplier who can provide the high quality stuff.

I use 2mm ecowool got it in a coop..41c ft!...and use .4mm ribbon kanthal wire from temco...dual coils at 0.6ohms

And the lesson we learned with this is?
1. BATTERY SAFETY!!!!!
2. Those little dumb looking plastic boxes work really well and are very pocket friendly.
3. RESPECT ALL batteries.
4. batteries are not to be taken lightly.
5. See all the above!!!!!!^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I'm just glad your ok my friend. Bad things can happen to good people when batteries or any voltage comes into play. (Still got the scar on my leg to prove what 480 VAC looks like when it comes out of your body). But I did learn a new language that day. :D

Yeah, another minute or so and it might have gone totally thermal and vented, and so close to my goods. So scary! It could have been so much worse than ruined pants.

So happy you are O.K.!

Reputation .. crazy. Don't sweat it. It may work to your advantage. I am crazy. The less I worked at hiding it, the more money I made. Funny how things work sometimes! :)

That would be great if that happened to me, too.

Ekowool is silica, just braided into a sleeve instead of twisted into a rope.

I've become fond of "twik" (search ebay), which is ekowool with a cotton core. Its not the most economical stuff and you can't dry burn it, but you only need ~1 inch per wick in a Kayfun Lite if you pre-wind / mount your coil then thread it through (I found a 2.1 mm finishing nail in my toolbox that's the perfect size for winding a coil for twik).

For Kanthal, you can buy directly from Temco.

Bummer but you survived the ordeal. Use the new crazy persona to your advantage, repeat those motions during the battery incident when given an assignment you don't want, they'll find someone else to do it :) I'll ask this question again, the 1st time when a bad atty shorted out the battery to the ELA body ... shock, heat, OUCH! etc. Never got an answer back so here it is again - was your 18490 a protected battery? If so the short circuit protection ain't worth squat and I've heard that before on these so called "safe" batteries.

The 18490 AW is not protected,I don't think any IMR batteries are protected, none of mine are.The AW 18500 is a protected battery, but not an IMR.

Ive tried several builds on my Kayfun Lite, what works best for me in terms of VTF, is 2mm Silica with kathal ribbon wire...didnt like the taste of ekowool that much

Anyone want to trade ss accent rings (new/nearly new)..for new 18650 kick extention. I sniped one on the classys the other day, and i doubt i will be using 18650 kicked...im more a 18350/18490 type of guy..its supposed to be brand new and unused and should be arriving this week PM if u want to trade.

Tia

Just to let you know I don't like the ELA/Kick/18650 combo either its a bit to long for my taste... I Kick my ELA with a 18490 battery and I use the Precise ELA Extended Tube when I do...the added length of the ext tube makes it more secure IMO....... I would keep it if I were you....

If you use Ekowool , it is best to boil your Ekowool as with all silica. It washes off any residues and takes out that new silica taste. I do a double 15 min boil and dry it in a toaster oven. Nice clean taste, and if there is any taste it only lasts a few puffs. Some torch it for a few seconds, but I find its not necessary.

Thanks for the info and education, I was wondering what the difference was between silica and ecowool lol.
