just received some kanthal 28 and 32 awg and wanna practice microcoils on some old protank and vivinova heads. Havn't used either clearo in over a year and use mainly innokin clearos but i figure those are tougher to rebuild.

Any suggestions on which of the youtube reviewers do a better job ? randomly subscribed to the following : Joozelt, AndrewWVids and Rip Trippers based on number of views. Any of them good ? Anyone else out there you recommend ?

Thank You all

Also, which of 28 or 32 is more suited to microcoils. Not looking to make this a full time hobby out of this, but just to recoil some clearos and rebuildables ( which are on the way), on the weekends for the following week. Some solid consistent coil that i can reproduce everytime. Will be using cotton for now until my silca 2mm order arrives and i can practice with both.

P.s. looking for a coil between 1.6 and 2.0

Any help would be greatly appreciated

10 wraps of 28 gives me 1.4 12 gives me 1.8
8 wraps of 32 normal coil gives 1.8

I'm stuck. Really.

The bottom of my PT2 will regularly get stuck and I can't get it off. I don't over-tighten it. But this is like a regular occurrence each time I go to fill it. Now it's stuck and my husband won't be home for a few hours to take it apart for me. My fingers are all raw. :( I don't know what to do with it.

It keeps twisting away from the glass. Ugh. When I first got the thing I thought it was awesome, but now I see so many flaws. I just bought another half dozen new coils, too.

Grab it with some cloth or thin leather or rubber. Anything that will give you a better grip.

just rebuilt my first coil..did 10 wraps of 28g on a 5/64 bit.. on my mvp it says 1.5 ohms, its a thing of beauty..using sterile cotton ...having a problem with performance though ,not getting good flavor or vapor..tried less cotton to where it threads thru the coil easily and still little of both. What am I doing wrong??

sorry forgot to say its on my minipt2

Yeah Meggie, even a tissue/napkin/paper towel may give you a slightly better grip. Or (this one sounds weird), try tightening the bottom into the base of the tank a little more until they kind of "lock together", and than try unscrewing the base of the tank < this has worked for me but try not to break your battery's 510 connection or your Protanks'.

Crawl you might get better flavor/vapor with a higher resistance build, maybe with some 30g if you have any. I also noticed I get better flavor from my more-narrow coils, (1.58mm, compared to 1.7mm). If you have some 30g, try wrapping a microcoil on a smaller 1/16" bit, and see if that gives you better flavor.

Or maybe try less cotton, almost to the point to where it leaks. Sometimes my tank will leak for the first 15minutes or so, until the cotton soaks & swells up. I have found that the less cotton, the more flavor - try to use as little cotton possible, without letting it leak.
... I was using too much cotton when I first began rebuilding, it's easy to do. It's surprising how little of an amount of cotton you really need, for a great vape!

And are you using a flavor wick? You really shouldn't need one, especially with a 5/64 bit. I don't need one even when I build a micro on a 1/16 bit - I used to use them, but found that they definitely mute my flavor a bit.

Thanks for the advice.. All I have at the moment is 28g...I will try less cotton c if that helps..and no I am not using a flavor wick.
Also will try a new rebuild with 12 wraps to increase the resistance.

Just took the 10 wrap apart and seen how much the cotton swelled.....definitely too much cotton

first build ever : 9 wraps kanthal awg around the largest drill bit i have that fits into the cup ( not sure of the diameter ). Don't have a blow torch, so i put the coil in a wrench pressed til coil compressed, laid on desk, put two heavy books on either side of the wrench, kept in place for an hour. looked like the wraps were touching with the naked eye, but with a magnifying glass there were spaces visible. threaded cotton through (regular cvs cotton ). assembled the coil, measured on vamo 5, got no load. pushed the coil a little further down the cup and put the stem back in. Voila ! 1.4 ohms. filled the tank.

Excellent vapor, no burnt taste up to 9.5 watts, but the sweet spot for me was 8 watts. Was almost done with the entire tank when i noticed i had forgotten to put the little silicon thing around the stem. But i don't have any gurgling or leaks. Strange !

The flavor is loads better than the stock coil and the throat hit, vapor and draw is fantastic. I think i got lucky.

If i can speed up the process i will be bringing back my protanks back into action. I need to buy a blow torch and some organic or surgical cotton also i believe.

Any suggestions as to further refining the process and any opinions as to why i don't have leaks or gurgling without the silicon thingy ? Is it necessary at all ?

Maz, congrats on your success with your first microcoil build!! It is gratifying, isn't it?
Cotton swells up a lot, much more than silica. That's why you don't need the silicone cup, because the cotton is taking up more room than your silica would. I could better answer your question if I knew what size drill bit you used to wrap on. And what gauge Kanthal did you use, 28g?

yeah, i did use 28. Not sure about the drill bit size, but it fits pretty snug in the slots of the cup. It took me a long time to build and assemble the coil. I am hoping i can get it down to 15 minutes. Sure glad i didn;t throw away my old heads. Had just about given up on protanks even though i prefer the tanks to Innokin tanks. Innokins stock coils are so much better and more consistent, but it gets expensive at 2.50 a head.

one odd thing though, the resistance increased to 1.6 after a refill !

Been using this same coil for about a month now (vertical micro @ 1.6 ohms; 28g kanthal on 14g mandrel w/ cotton wicking), just needs rewicking once a week or so, and occasional reshaping during said maintenance. Haven't had to wrap a coil for myself since then, good thing I have friends who vape and need coils built or I'd start getting rusty!

I got some more 30g and some 28g as well, I think I'm going to try a 28g build tonight. Probably 10-12 wraps on my 16g needle bit (1.65mm). Will report with my results!

five4, I haven't tried a build with any twisted Kanthal. But earlier back in this thread, somebody posted results of their Twisted 32g Microcoil build. They twisted their 32g and than just built a regular microcoil with it, and said it was the best vape they had! I'd like to try this myself. I was just reading this but forgot which page it was on (somewhere around pg.9 I believe), I'll look back and check

Anyone tried a twisted 32 gauge build? I ran out of 30 gauge and Temco was out, ended up getting 32 gauge and want the durability of 30.

Hey f1ve, good evening. Twisted awg32 actually has the approx res. of 28g and you can use that as an approx. Depending on how tight (or not) you twist it that rough index can vary. If you torsion/tension wind it (yes you can!) that can have an impact too. I posted some tables on this thread for some 28g wind values, you may be able to extrapolate from there to compute your expected res. Once you twist yours though check the res. for a given wire length and compare against TEMCO's 28, you can prorate a result from there by comparison. Not going to go any further OT than to say look at your mail in a few for some pic's of the experimental build I'm working out for a promo. Any questions, let me know. You can tell me what you're building.

Good luck.

:)
